Comments: Seasons in the Kingdom, a novel set in the village of Sinchon, 1973-74, tells the story of village life for the American GI...recent comments about the book:
"AbsoF...loutely, an outF...standing book, to use the vernacular military speak. The custom of putting four letter words between every syllable is a constant in the military, and one soon tunes it out, not noticing when you or others do it. The author Tim Norris, has written an astutely accurate historical narrative, including (as they say in movie reviews) adult language, adult situations, drugs, violence, brutality, racism, prostitution, sex, and in this village -- more sex. The story takes place in a real military camp ASCOM (Army Support Command), and a real Korean village, Sin-Chon, complete with American named clubs for pool, drink, and debauchery. The reader should not be fooled by the backdrop, language, or circumstance. This is a love story, the build-up is slow, and carefully constructed, designed to carefully veil the impending and often tenuous romance. Over all the story is an exploration of love, marriage, children, and life's dreams, as seen by a 20 something boy and girl. The life of a GI in Korea was far from a usual experience. Even the sex is different, as the author humorously contrasts prostitution in America, with love making Korean style."

Comments: Today I was informed that those who served in the
1/32nd Inf must proof that they were in danger or
witnessed dangerous events while stationed in the DMZ
during the 70s.

Agent Orange presumption has been extended to 1975 even
though science dictates it should be ten years. So we
that were exposed from 1976 - 1980 are out of luck.

Comments: I recently started getting my papers together as I am now alone, and after all these years, found that my middle name was wrong as well as the length of time I was with the Cav. On April 29th,2010, I went to a state vet rep to see if it could be corrected. He said sure and added; "did you put in your claim for agent orange exposure." I explained, although scheduled to go to Nam I was literally taken off the bus at Fort Knox (I just completed training as a armor reconnaissance specialist 11d) as a secondary MOS. A thru G were going to Viet Nam. However, once taken off the bus, I was taken to the orderly room and the old man ask me why I had not told him I had a brother in Viet Nam? I was unaware I did. As it turned out, My brother was with a Artillary Unit of the N.H. National Guard and had was in Korea. The family had not yet told me. So I was held over for a few days and sent to Korea. Once there I was assigned to Second Division and then to Hq Hq Troop 4/7th Cav., at Camp MacKenzie. They were surprised to see a Graves Registration Specialist and joked, "do you know something we don't" That was a Ltc Charles Belt, as I remember. Then the SMG took me aside and told me it would take a few weeks to straighten out the error. A chaplain came in complaining he had still not gotten a driver. I was asked did I have any problem with religious people? I stated no, I worked closely with clergy in the funeral profession back home. Thus I became the Chaplains driver and assistant and remained so all the time in Korea. July 69-71. I have strayed somewhat. A senior moment. In any event, that day in April, I discovered our unit, was high on their list as possibly being exposed to agent orange. Needless to say it was confussing finding out this after all these years. And understanding better many of my medical problems over the years somewhat better. Iam looking for anyone who remembers me from that period of 1969 thru august 1971. I have lost track of people over the years, and had reentered the army in 1974 thru 1980. because the 214 was in error, I need help validating I was there in 1969. I imagine, I will be long gone by the time they make a finding, but it is worth the try as long as my health holds out.

Specialist David Apperson, USA, Veteran

David,
I can confirm that during the period of May 1977 and
February 1978, B Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry,
Third Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division did participate in
the following live ammunition combat missions.

Thunderbolt Mission ~ reaction force

DMZ duty on Guard Posts Collier and Ouellette
conducting guard duty, observation post duty, and also
conducting combat patrols.

Special Munitions Security Mission

All of these missions are actual live ammunition
security combat missions.

These missions are held in all types of weather from
extremely heat to sub zero weather. And that you were a
member of the Company during these missions and were a
participant.

Finally, I can certainly validate (even though the
statement presented by a former Battalion Commander at
the time in question and ultimately retiring as a Major
General) needs no validation, the information provided
in his statement.

I assumed the duties of First Sergeant B Co, 1/32
Infantry in May 1977 and departed in Feb 1978 and I
ultimately retired as the Ninth Sergeant Major of the
Army, having served with Chief of Staff, Army General
Gordon R. Sullivan and Secretaries of the Army, Michael
P.W. Stone and Togo West in July 1995

outposts GP 115 and GP 116 ~
___________________________________________

During the months of February and March of 1978,
Soldiers of B company, 1st Battalion, 32d Infantry
(Buccaneers) were manning Guard Posts (GPs) Collier and
Ouelette in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the
North (nK) and South (ROK) Korean border in the
vicinity of the jointly ROK/US manned Joint Security
Area (JSA) at Panmunjong.

During daylight hours Buccaneer Soldiers observed nK
activities to ensure the safety of ROK/US soldiers
working in the JSA.

At night US Soldiers from Collier and Ouelette
conducted small unit (squad sized) ambush patrols in
the two kilometer area between the MDL and the ROK
southern boundary fence to interdict nK Ranger Commando
teams who were trying to infiltrate the DMZ.

David Apperson was a member of B Company and
participated in these operations in the bitter cold of
the Korean winter where below zero temperatures were
not uncommon.

Comments: On August 18, 1976, I worked for the UNC, USFK, EUSA, J-2 in the Combined Intelligence Center - Korea as a Side Looking Airborne Radar Imagery Analyst. I was responsible for the interpretation of of imagery taken along the DMZ by U.S. Army Mohawk surveillance aircraft.
I started work that day at 1830 hrs and finished about 1100 hrs, 19 August. I worked reading the film, plotting it and doing the interpretation reports that went to all commands within the UNC, USFK, and EUSA. During these days I worked approximately 19 hours a day, total for the ten days was approximately 192 hours.
Each year around the anniversary I remember the incident as if it were yesterday. Each time I visit Korea I try to go to Pan Mun Jom to pay my respects to the men who were brutally murdered that day. They are not and will not be forgotten by me.

Comments: Have you all noticed how few there are of any living Buccaneers of the 1/32 INF?
It just seems to me that most of us all died off or are dieing off very quickly.
Our sister unit of the 1/9 manchus seem to be doing alot better than we Buccaneers.
Any thoughts of what caused this to happen?
For my end of things, I just feel lucky (not the lucky club) to be one of the last still alive.

I was in B company.

Keywords: Loooking for anybody in the Air Force who was there in 1970-71. The Air Force personnel who were there at that time were in one of only two buildings. One of them being a Q-hut with oil heat, and the other was a barracks building that we shared with the Army personnel. I remember house boys that you could not trust, and sharing our shower space with tiny little tree frogs, and of course the NCO club and the village.
