Comments: Jerome Franklin Foss, from Minneapolis MN. Passed away this Memorial day, 2016.
After reading this web site, and others, it won't shock you to know , that he did
not talk about the war till late in his life.

I just came to have a relationship with him these last ten years. He worked the
night shift the first half of my life. He had to. The chinese attacked him every
nite, when he would try to sleep. Every morning about 2 am, the bugles and
whistles and chinese would wake him. So he had to work nites. I did not
understand before, but I have come to understand over the last ten years.

He never tried to keep in contact with anyone he served with, it was just to hard
on him to revisit it all. But he thought of you all often. My brothers and myself
all served in the military, but none of us ever saw combat. At this point in my
life, I consider that a blessing.

Had you all not made the sacrifices you did, than me and my brothers would have
had to. Thank you. May you and your brothers rest in peace Pops, no more bad
dreams, no more pain.

with love, your son Mark

Comments: My eldest brother, Lt. Peter Howland Monfore, Infantry Unity Commander of 23 INF 2
DIV, was KIA September 19, 1951, in north Korea. He received the Distinguished
Service Cross, posthumously, for his actions in Korea. Camp Monfore was established
in his honor; however, it may no longer exist.

I have numerous photos, letters, and other memorabilia about my brother that I
would be happy to share, should any of it be beneficial to your project.

Thank you for establishing such a fine remembrance of those who have served.

Comments: My father was the recipient of 3 purple hearts, 2 bronze stars and a silver star but he would never speak of his time in combat, save to tell me horror stories to make me stop asking. He never recovered from the trauma yet two generals visited him on his hospice bed. I do not know if this is definitely his regiment but I have been trying to find out for years. I am an only child and I want my child to have the knowledge of a legacy of heroism. Can you help me?

Comments: Looking for information on my great uncle, PFC Glenn Walter Cantrall, KIA near Kumhwa on 22 April 1952 by artillery fire. He was 22 years old when KIA. He was assigned to M Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. The 23rd Infantry command report for April 1952 says that two other 3rd battalion personnel were wounded in addition to PFC Cantrall being KIA on 22 April 1952. He had enlisted 21 months prior to his death, so must have been with the 23rd Infantry Regiment for the entirety of its action in Korea to that point. Any information on him during his time in Korea would be greatly appreciated.

He served from the onset of the war until a disabling shrapnel injury on Feb. 13th,
1951 at Chipyong-Ni.

He was a feisty redhead from Chicago -- and if you were with him, you would
remember him. He was with HQ company, I also see B Battalion on his DD214. I know
this unit was nearly obliterated and joined up with other units before Chipyong-Ni.

I honor of all you and give thanks. The ultimate sacrifice is not just a life lost,
but a life severely changed and service given for our freedoms. My sincere and

The earliest document that shows it is a Commadn Report from February of 1953. But one veteran told me it was introduced as early as 1951 with Colonel Freeman around the time of the Battle of Chipyong-ni.

Many thanks

Comments: My grandfather talks about his time in Korea quite often and wonders what became of some of the men he served with. His name is Samuel David Fields but was known to others as Smiley. He is from Kentucky (Pike County). He speaks of one gentleman quite often, Woodrow Wooten from Louisiana possibly. He has a few photos but can't seem to remember the names of those in the pictures. COMPANY E, 2nd Division, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Regiment. He was WIA 7/25/1952 along with a 2nd Lieutenant who was killed. My grandfather returned to action for a few days before being sent home. He remembers an enemy machine gun nest and Baldy. He recalls a Master Sgt. Lewis or Louis Palladino or Calladino (spelling?) who was possibly from Michigan. Any info you have of this time would be greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone my grandfather served with, that would make his day. Thanks!

Comments: (Forgive me, as I'm still gathering this information and it is as
accurate as I know so far...)

I just learned quite a bit about my father, Robert Newman, from
historical documents...
On Hill 1051 at Chaun-ni, Korea, on the 38th Parallel, Private
First Class Newman, along with 2200 other members of the 2nd
Infantry Division, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Company E, withstood
an attack that lasted 3 days (this would become known as The May
Massacre)...
My father and his 2200 fellow soldiers withstood an attack by
185,000 Chinese and North Korean soldiers...
After the command squad was wiped out, Private Newman rallied the
remaining soldiers in his squad and held off overwhelming
superior forces for 3 days until reinforcements could arrive...
During this horrendous fight, my father was wounded but kept on
fighting with his fellow heroes, as the enemy and friendly bodies
piled up around them...this battle is known as one of the
fiercest and deadliest battles in the history of warfare, as over
65,000 Chinese/North Korean soldiers were either killed or
wounded during the melee...
After the battle ended, my father was but one of 74 US soldiers
that survived the carnage...
Private Robert Newman was awarded the Silver Star for his heroic
bravery and sacrifice, after he returned, dusty and dirty, to the
lines a week later...he had spent 7 days after the battle behind
enemy lines (3 days as a Prisoner of War)...

This information, that I'm still uncovering, has brought
forgiveness and closure to my relationship with my father...

I forgive and love you, Dad.

Comments: My uncles Cecil and Raymond Jennings both were in Korea same
time. Cecil
was MIA for 3 days May 1951; some info known. Have no info on
Raymond - no unit, etc. The only thing I know is that both
were Medics. Raymond may have been at Yalu ?. Any info on
these brothers, both now deceased, would be appreciated.
