He was a Private First Class at the time and was wounded that day by a grenade. I don't know if he was evacuated right then or walked away from it. I'd like to know which platoon he was in. When he returned to duty in October he went to K Company, but was with HQ Co from June until August when he was wounded. Howard was awarded the CIB, Purple Heart, Korean Service medal w/2 bronze service stars. can someone from his unit substantiate this so he could be awarded appropriately?

Comments: Hello, I'm looking for any information anyone might have about my late grandfather, Robert (Bob) Guerin. He was a staff sergeant in Korea with the 17th and he never really spoke about his experiences in Korea. I found a lot of his items from the war and I know he was in country till around 1952. The only story he ever told about Korea was how him and his Lt. had seen Chinese at one side of a river and N.Koreans at their back and how the 17th performed a strategic withdrawl, which he explained to my 1st grade class meant they ran like heck ( not the word he used but I'm paraphrasing). His army green ball cap has a map of Korea drawn on it with all the places he was; Pusan, Taegu, Anyang-ni, suwon, Inchon, Ichon, Iwon, Choyi, Pungsan, Aug-yi, and Kapsan. The only other thing he ever said about Korea was that at Inchon they were called the floating reserves since they didn't land till about the 18th after the initial landings on the 15th. He was from Worcester, Massachusettes and he passed away years ago. If anyone has any information regarding my grandfathers service it would be much appreciated. Now that I'm older I'm more curious and I regret not asking him more.

Comments: My dad served in Korea June, 1951 through April, 1952. He trained at Ft. Chafee, AR. Was in the punchbowl a short time. Was a Sgt. and was attached to a tank outfit as a medic for a while. His Lt.'s were Lt. champagne and Lt. Bailey. Major was Maj. King. He does not remember a lot of details. I have the yearbook from his basic training and will publish that online someplace very soon. Also have some pictures of him and some buddies on R&R in Japan. One is a big old tall Sgt., about 6-9. And a Mexican Sgt. from California who was a dental assistant for the outfit. Standing by his tent one day he heard a whistling sound. Looked up and it was an airplane with red insignia. He thought they were about to get strafed by a Chinese plane and jumped into a snow filled fox hole. They had a fox hole dug between every pup tent. It was an Aussie pilot who crash landed his plane in the snow about 100 yards across the creek. Looking for pictures or stories from anyone who remembers him. Thanks.

My family always told me about him and how he wanted to serve his country because he loved it so much. His parents, my aunt and uncle, were devastated by his death, as can be expected. I just wanted people to know what a great person he was and how much he was missed by his family and friends. This is what they mean when people talk about freedom not being free. This is the sacrifice that is made to ensure our safety and continue to keep our country as great as it is. May those that have given the ultimate never be forgotten.

Heavy machine gunner. Bob served on the northern most point of the US lines. He told stories of the Chinese having to make a choice either going down an open road or coming up his path with his 50 cal waiting. Every evening after chow and before he headed back to his position he would fill every pocket and grab every box of grenades he could carry.
This explains the kind of guy he was. At certain points of his position he could see for miles and during the day when nothing much was happening in his position. He would watch the battle on the other side of the mountain facing more south. Two Chinese were caught under a bridge one tried to make a run for it and got wounded. As his buddy tried to save his friend the rounds were flying all around him. Bob was yelling on the side of the mountain for the two to make it out alive.
Always up spirited, he hardly ever talked about the bad stuff he saw and made light of the stuff that was bad. Like the time he heard a rooster. He had duty in the forward op. He kept hearing a rooster cackle. Bob being the avid outdoors man. Couldn't resist looking for it. LMAO, he got on the roof of the outpost bunker with his binoculars. He said he wasn't even up there for more than 40 seconds or so....then incoming! They fired 3 rounds at his position. One landing right in front of the bunker knocking him through the roof and into the bunker covering him with sandbags. He didnt know if he was still alive but....laughing, all he could think about was the rooster while they uncovered the sandbags from him.
HEHE they gave him some R&R after that. While he was there 2 things happened:
1) He ran into a short term but very close friend. Gilbert Travis (a whole new story in itself), very neat one though.
2) They made an announcement that they needed a cook....Bob said his arm went up so fast it almost threw it out of socket.
He volunteered and was a cook the remainder of time. (Which again, is another story in itself).
One thing I would like to share is the experience he had with the VA.
First let me start off by saying this....If you or a loved one EVER served in the military and have been diagnosed with ALS. Make sure you take advantage of the benefits offered to you. ALS is an automatic 100%...this means they pay for your care. Theyre not as out in the open with it. They did a study after a congressman's son (or something like that) was diagnosed with ALS. They connected it to the military somehow. (I think its) if you ever served in the military theres a 65% chance over the general populace that you will have it.
The problem with Bob was he saw 5 doctors that would not commit. Then he went to an outside specialist. Still nothing. Then he went with a ticked off 3rd party. That got the ball rolling. I stayed out of his medical and financial things....he appointed people to do that. I was very upset to find out for the first year his medical treatment was a sleeping pill and aspirin. When he got transferred to hospice, I did range of motion exercises with him and it was so sad. It made me VERY angry they werent doing anything like that for him.

Comments: I am putting together a book on the Bucks County PA men who lost their lives in Korea. I would like to get information, of any kind, on Corporal Thomas Frank Solometo who was Killed In Action on July 3, 1952. When completed, the book will be given free of charge to any interested person. I am doing this solely to remember these guys. I have already published a similar book on the Bucks County men who lost their lives in Vietnam.

Comments: My Dad served in Korea in 1950 & 1951. He served under Captain Raymond G. Harvey. He is in bad health & talks a lot about his war days. He never talked a lot about them when we were younger, but now he does. Just thought if I could find anyone who was there with him.

Comments: I am looking for information on my late uncle, Charles E. Barker.
He served in the Army in Korea.
He never talked about his experiences there.
He was awarded the Bronze Star while there but the family doesn't know the story behind it. What he did that caused him to recieve this award.
I was wondering if anybody has any info on his service over there.
I think he served with the 17th Infantry, 7th Division.
Uncle Charlie passed away on November 13th 2013. He is buired at Tahoma National Cemetery.
Thank you.
