Comments: OUTPOST HARRY REUNION

Eighty-five members/guests attended the thirteenth annual reunion of Outpost Harry Survivors Association, held in San Diego, California from June 10 to June 13, 2004 at the Holiday Inn at Mission Bay/Sea World area.

Following registration on Thursday a reception was held during which the group was welcomed by association president, Francis Riley and the motel staff. Jerry Cunningham, reunion coordinator briefed the group on the reunion schedule of activities and then the group was treated to a complimentary buffet.

Friday the group took an extended narrated tour of San Diego that included the downtown, business area, Navy and Marine facilities, Balboa Park, Coronado Island. Stops included the beach, Navy aircraft carrier Midway, a gourmet lunch served overlooking Mission bay and a typical waterfront shopping area. The evening was spent in the hospitality room viewing material from the association’s historical archives.

Saturday morning a memorial service was held in remembrance of the soldiers who died defending the outpost and the members who died since the last reunion.

While the members held the annual business meeting the ladies had brunch.
Floyd Diewert was elected President and Del Tolen was elected Vice president. The reunion coordinator offered two sites for the 2005 reunion.
The members voted for Hawaii.

During the banquet on Saturday night Major Tom Whitaker, Vice President of the Marne Association Outpost, gave a comprehensive presentation of the division’s action in Iraq during OIF. He showed a brief video made up of events recorded by division soldiers. Major Whitaker on behalf of the OPHSA presented plaques to Chaplain Ed Hanrahan (Society Outpost # 5) and Editor/Photographer Jim Jarboe (Society Outpost # 22) for their devoted service to the association. President Floyd Diewert presented the Saint Maurice Medallion to survivor Paul Gregory of the 5th RCT.

Keywords: My orders for Korea got to me before the 15th Inf shipped out. I went to the 32nd of the 7th Inf Div on Mt Fuju, Camp McNair [we called it tin can city]. The Bn. Commander was Lt Col Gary H. Schumann, The HQ Co, Commander Was 1st Lt Lynn, A mess Sgt called Gabby, A SFC who wanted to be KIA for the glory.[We stayed as remote from him as we could get] We trained ROKS on Fugi. We went in at Inchon, to Puson, then to Ewon and north to the chosin and the resort of Samsu overlooking the beautiful Yalu river. The 40 below was bad enough, but those divisions of unfriendly fellows on the other side of the river were not really musicians even with their bugle tooting. I am now 74 years old so I have forgotten some less thrilling things. I do remember, when we were drawing our weapons and clothing in the army or marine base south of LA, california, they had run out of parker liners, long johns, fatigue jacket liners, artic foot wear and most of the comfort apparel that was in fashion at the time. The only warm jacket I had was a communist quilted one that I liberated. The people I remember was a 15th Inf Warrant officer Lee A. Graves KIA. A 7th Cav regt, Able Troop, SFC John Glover platoon Sgt KIA Most of that Company were KIA. I had been in occupation with the 7th Cav previously at Camp Drake, Japan. The only one who survived of Able Troop that I know of was SFC Konapeski who I later saw at Fort Benning. Like most soldiers I was infantry first, but later received training as a medic, clerical, military police, supply, and what not.

Comments: My dad served in the 25th - C Company - Robert A. Brantley. Is their anyone who remembers him or serving with him? He doesn't talk much about the war. In fact, I told him to watch the History Channel special "Fire and Ice" on the Korean War and he said he could watch any war except his own. I watched and was horrified! I have always been so very proud of my father and his service to his country but to see those pictures in the documentary made me very sad for all of you vets, alive or passed on. Us members of the younger generation have no idea of the sacrifices that were made or the depth of horror that was witnessed. God bless all the vets.

His military occupation is listed as (1745) Light Weapons Infantry Leader. His KIA date is 1953-07-16. This date coincides with the Kumsong River Salient. I have since tried to obtain his military records with the help of my grandfather, Charlie's brother, and I was informed that they were destroyed by fire some 20 years ago. Hopefully this info helps me and you figure out more information on my great uncle.

Thanks again!!!

Comments: I am writing this for my dad, Carl W. Siegel. He has pancreatic cancer and only has a couple of months. He is 84 yrs. old and this past year is the first time he really started talking about the war. He doesn't have a lot of time left and is starting to get confused. But if anyone out there remembers him, he'd be thrilled to get a card or a quick note from you saying you remember him. He is deaf in one ear (war injury) so phone calls are kind of difficult. He feels forgotten right now so any rememberence would really up lift his spirts.

He was in WWII:5th Army(Tech 5). Hq Battery 4321 AAA AW Battalion. Campaigns: Tunisian, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, No. Appenines, Po Valley.
He served from 1942-45

He was also in the Korean War: 3rd Div. 15th Inf. Co.A (Able) 1st Bn. He was a M/SG. He served from 1950-54 and then joined the Reserves until 1963.

He remembers he was a replacement for SG. Mills and he remembers doing patrol with a LT. Cobb along the Imgem(?)River.

Other names he recalls are Rocko from Brooklyn, Johnny Albright and Seth Huntley(?) from Askansas. I think they are from WWII.

He also remembers a guy named Nick from the Reserves who would stop by the house to visit and always had a handful of candy for us kids. At that time we lived in Hometown, IL.

Any acknowledgment of him would be greatly appreciated. Thank you you all.

His daughter,

Mariellen Spiros

Comments: Fellow Veterans

My father John Madison Bennett is a veteran of WWII and I am a veteran of the Viet Nam era, and the nephew of a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, posthumously, of the Korean War. My uncle PFC EMORY L. BENNETT was a member of COMPANY B, 15th INFANTRY REGIMENT, 3rd INFANTRY DIVISION, and was killed near Sobangsan, Korea on June 24, 1951, while providing a one man cover fire so his company could effect an orderly with-drawl.
The Emory L. Bennett Foundation Inc. was formed on Sept. 25, 2002 by family members, classmates, and friends of Emory to place a statue in his honor in the New Riverfront Park in Cocoa, Fl, and to remember ALL veterans of all wars or conflicts. Cocoa currently has no downtown recognition for veterans, it’s about time. June 24th 2003, was 52 years since Emory was killed, now is the time to erect a lasting memorial in Emory’s home town to him and All veterans. Emory lived in Brevard County for 15 years before he enlisted in the Army. The park where the statue will be located is less than a block from where he lived most of his childhood.
A life size statue, base and memorial plaques will cost in the neighborhood of $100,000.00. This is no small amount to be sure, but neither is the sacrifice that our veterans have made for all of us, as you well know, so we can enjoy the freedom of our day-to-day lives.
In closing we are asking for your donations to this worthy cause, as it is the right thing to do. When asked, as you recall, our veterans did the right thing no matter what the cost, including sacrificing their life. All contributions are tax exempt to this memorial, Cocoa’s only downtown open-air veteran’s recognition.
Thank you for your monetary support. Please visit our web page listed below for more information and photos.

Sincerely,
John Michael Bennett

Comments: I have been told that anyone serving in Korea during the conflict was entitled to the Bronze Star. Another version was that anyone entitled to the combat infantry badge automaticly got the Bronze Star. Can anyone clarify this for me please.
