Comments: I have a Packet Rats shoulder patch dating to the late 1950s that I found in my Dad’s effects about a year ago (2022). My Dad, Edwin E. Benoist, Jr., from Natchez, Mississippi, flew C119s either with the 815th TCS, or the 816th, out of Ashiya Air Base, 1953-1956. I’d like to learn more about his squadron and their history during his service. Most of my Dad’s photos and correspondance during this time were lost in a house fire in November, 1963.

Comments: Long time since i've heard from other Troop Carrier folks. As Aircrew Member, would
enjoy hearing from other radio operators, flight engineers or load masters to talk
over our experiences.

Comments: I guess there are now few survivors of the 816th TCS remaining but i thought i would give it one more try.
I arrived in Japan on the Daniel I. Sultan troop ship and was taken by train from Fuchu to Ashiya on a very cold early December overnight, signed in at the orderly room and was assigned to my barracks room shared by an Irish airman who kept a knife under his pillow at night. He was ex-infantry during the Korean action and re-upped in the USAF. One knew never to approach his bunk while he was sleeping as it would be at the risk of your life!
I had MANY adventures flying with great crews, mostly on 52-5929 with the green concentric circles painted on the nose. Would LOVE to talk to anyone who was there during '55-56.
Get in touch! I'll respond quickly!

Comments: pilot, primary mission was support of 187th regimental
combat team, 82nd airborne... secondary, military
cargo between japan and korea. c119 was often
restricted for passenger service, but when not
restricted we hauled a lot of r and r's. Was at ashiya
from july 52 to July 53. Holy smoke, 52 years ago,
how did that happen?

Comments: Just wondering if anyone happens to know what the 816th TCS emblem (Patch) looked like. Did they maintain the 816th Bomb Squadron patch or create a knew one. Also if anyone knows where I can find a 816th Patch or has an image of one it would be appreciated if you could share it with my unit.
We are deploying in the summer and will be under the name of the 816th EAS

Comments: Lt. Jim Irvine was a pilot who was in the class '52H and was later trained on C-119s. He was with the unit from very early 1953 until a little after the war ended and then joined M.A.T.S. His health is not good and he is dying. If anyone knew him and would like to talk to him one more time please contact me.
