Comments: Greetings,

I was born at Ashiya, 16 July, 1955. My Dad, Lt. Edwin E. Benoist, was a C-119 pilot. I have just come across nine 25’ rolls of 8mm Kodachrome (movie film) he shot over the course of 1953-1956; . I also have a “Packet Rats” unit Shoulder patch I’m sure someone would be interested in obtaining. Will post a photo once I figure out how to do so.

Please email me if interested. I would like to have all the film rolls digitized so I can view them. If anyone in the organization has any thoughts on digitizing services they’ve used and recommend I’d like to hear from them. I will be happy to share the footage once I’ve received the digitized files. I know some of them depict Bangkok, Saigon, and Clark Air Base in the Philippines.

Sincerely,

Keith Benoist

Comments: I guess there are not so many of us old time troop carriers left or still
interested in unit history.

i served the 816th TCS from dec. 4, 1954 thru 1956 as airborne radio op and load
master and have lost all contacts with others who served with me at Ashiya or
other assignments in Japan, so, i was wondering if there are any planned reunions
for us and thought you might know...

i hope you are well in these trying times with viruses and economics doing some
bad stuff.

Comments: My father, Melvin T. Smith passed away in 2009 and when I was cleaning out his Air Force things I found a large silver etched white china display plate with the following names on it: Bug-Eye & Joyce, Betty & EJ, Olen, Bill & Criss, Milt, and Mack. The inscription in the center says Sayonara Japan - 1961. There is a red horse running through the clouds in a red diamond shape with 815 TCS - Flying Jennies written under it. This is in the center of the 12 inch plate.

I also have a picture of Betty and EJ who were their friends and they are all dressed up like geisha girls and papa san's - having quite a good ol time it seems. They must have all been in their 40's at the NCO club, maybe at a costume night. We left Ashiya AFB and moved to Tachi - sometime between 1959-60 I imagine. I remember well the machi in both places.

I would love to hear from any one who knew my father or mother Lou. Or anyone who might know any of the other folks whose names are on this plate. I will be glad to email pictures.
Thanks, Valli Smith Chilton

Comments: My father, 1st Lieutenant Edwin Euguene Benoist, Jr., from
Natchez, Mississippi, was a pilot at Ashiya, 1953-1956. He flew
C-119s. I was born at Ashiya, July 16, 1955. My older brother,
Paul, was also born at Ashiya, a year earlier. My mother was
"Patsy" White Benoist, from Newkirk, Oklahoma. My father had
trained, earlier, at Enid AFB, in Enid, Oklahoma.

Lt. Benoist went on to study law at the University of Mississippi,
following his return CONUS, and went on to fulfill a career in Law
Enforcement. Lt./Capt. Benoist later flew with the Mississippi
National Guard, but allowed his commission expire around
1970. He died, rather suddenly, in 1988, after a brief illness
with lymphoma.

I am a former United States Marine, Airborne. During my service
I met one other Marine who had "jumped" C-119s during the
Korean Conflict. I am interested to know what became of Lt.
Benoist's plane. I would also like to "experience" the C-119, by
flying in one. I know that several are/were still in service with
the U.S. Forestry Service as late as the Mid-eighties. They flew,
and perhaps still fly, fire retardant missions in the western
states. I have photos of some of these planes which I would be
happy to forward or post to this site. Although I have not seen
the film, I was very proud and inspired to see the C-119 cast in
the recent remake of "The Flight Of The Phoenix".

If anyone is interested in helping find out more about my
father's plane and crew, I would graciously entertain your
correspondance.

Sincerely,

Keith E. Benoist

I am very much interested in anyone with knowledge about the C-119's from Ashyia that were loaned to the French during the battle of Dien Bien Phu. My father was TDY at Clark A.B. during this period while C-119's ferried cargo to North Vietnam.

I have been to Dien Bien about 7 times since May '91. There is wreckage of a C-119 at the Army Museum in Dien Bien. I found (and acquired) what I believe is the aircraft data plate with aircraft's mfg serial number.

I do not know if this C-119 is from the battle of Dien Bien Phu or is a gunship from my war in the '60's. I am extremely curious if this aircraft can be traced back as one of the "loaners " we gave the French.

Comments: I was a Loadmaster with the 815TCS (C-130A 55 and 57 models) at Tachikawa AB, Japan from 1966-1970.
Spent most of the time Flying in Viet Nam. I was stationed with my dad (Jack Hollis) at Ashiya AB, Japan form 1955-1959. When the 815 TCS had C-119.

Interested in contact with any Flying Jennies from the past. Currently at Miawa AB, Japan working with the 35FW ."Airlift All The Way".

Comments: I am the Historian for the 815th Airlift Squadron, Flying Jennies here at Keesler AFB, MS. We are currently converting to the new C-130J model. I am trying to locate any past history of the Flying Jennies and the 815th. If anyone has any old pictures or stories, please pass them on to me. We are also planning to have a reunion here on the coast next year for all those stationed at Keesler, but all former Jennies are welcome. Look soon for Flyingjennies.com for more information

Thanks for any help,
Todd Patterson
