Comments: My father's cousin, Capt. Robert Schenck was a decorated B-17 bomber pilot in World War II. He also flew in the Korean War and was the senior pilot of a C-119C, "Flying Boxcar" from the 63rd Troop Carrier Squadron, 403rd Troop Carrier Group. On November 14, 1952, the aircraft was enroute from Ashiya Air Base, Japan to Seoul, Korea when it crashed into Hill 683 near Cho-ok and about 15 miles east of Airfield K-19, killing all 44 servicemen on board. He was 31 years old and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
If anybody can provide any further information it would be greatly appreciated as we know nothing other than was written here.
Thanking you in advance-Marc Schenck

Comments: I am currently doing research for a book project that is related to the service of the 403rd Troop Carrier Group, and the 63rd and 64 Troop Carrier Squadrons. I am especially interested in the early years of the war, most particularly 1943.
What helps me most is locating memoirs of men who served in those units. At this time I have the memoir of the group commander, Col. Harry Sands, and I would be happy to share that with anyone. Very interesting man. I also have the memoir of the squadron commander of the 64th, and would likewise share. I have almost nothing on the 63rd.
So - it you have documents related to the 63rd from that era, or if you are aware of memoirs, or if you have or know about photographs, I would sure love to hear from you.
Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Robert

Comments: I am retired Air Force and was stationed at Ashiya, Japan from 52 until early in 53. I was assigned to 9161 that crashed into the sea of Japan a short while after I transferred to Tachikowa, Japan (C-54's). It killed the radio operator that took my place, Kalipa, my engineer, SSgt. Hensley and pilot Panzerino. I believe they had paratroopers on board. I later became an Air Force Recruiter n Muncie, Indiana and ended up as an Operations Supervisor in SAC (B-52's) at Grand Forks AFB, ND. I later owned several Insurance Agencies and now working two days a week collecting charges for my youngest son that owns a large medical billing company. I collect from the doctors that do not have means to electronically send things directly to his office. I am 83 years old. I really loved the Air Force and everything it stood for.

Comments: From time to time the electricians were required to work in what we referred to as the wire cage, here we would build and rebuild electrical harnesses for the 4360 engines. The wires had to be wrapped or sleeved with asbestos.
I now have pulmonary fibrosis, a disease of the lungs for which there is no cure, I wonder if anyone remembers working with the asbestos and how can we prove that this condition ever existed.

I was in the last rotation that left Donaldson AFB to go to Germany and when we returned we had to land at Donaldson, and continue on to Hunter AFB.

Would like to here from some of you guys..........

Comments: I was assigned to the 63 OMS at Hunter AFB, Savannah, Ga. from Jan. 1965-Feb. 1967 then when the base closed they assigned me to the OMS Dover AFB, Dover, Del.
While at Hunter I went TDY to Rhine Main AB for a 4 month rotation then onto France and England TDY out of Rhine Main.
I started out in the hanger doing post op insp. on C-124's. I went to Run up school and R4360 eng. school and got my run up license to do pre flight insp. on the Launch Crew. I am looking for anyone who was stationed with me.
From Dover they sent me to Hawaii for 5 months and then when I returned to Dover I was sent to Pleiku AB, Vietnam for my final year. I went to school on A1-E's and was a crew chief on them with the 6th ACS in Pleiku.
