Comments: Please help me learn more about my dad..he is deceased now and really never spoke much of the war - and I know very little about his time there. He spoke of being in the Lightning Division; I know that he was decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and I know that he hated "that mortar"!! Can you tell me more?? I'd like his grand kids to know more about him (he never got to see them.) Thanks.

Comments: For My Dad; My Hero...may he rest in peace, 4/19/2005

My father came from meager beginnings. His mother died from complications related to giving him birth. As a result, he was reared by his aunt and uncle in Clairton, Pennsylvania, where, even as a child, he worked long hours in the local steel mills and coalmines.

At seventeen he joined the Army. Assigned to one of the last segregated units of the US Army, the 24th Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division, my father was witness to man’s inhumanity to man; he saw combat in Korea and was wounded in action before his nineteenth birthday.

He served his country, was wounded for his country, yet, even while in uniform, he was denied a seat in a diner because of the color of his skin. All these things served to make him the man he was in his youth…strong and determined, yet hardened and sometimes angry.

Yet in spite of this, my father accepted the fear of the Lord as the beginnings of his wisdom. And, as a consequence, was able to let go of the pain and hurt that too often afflicts those unwilling to pardon the past.

He became a gentle man. His words were encouraging; his eyes always squinted with happiness, and his touch conveyed empathy and sincerity.

He had a servant’s heart; always willing to lend a hand to those that needed help or offer an ear to those that needed to be heard. He did as he would want done to him, without refrain or prejudice, for he knew he was not better than any other. And in so doing, he was no better than any other, just different than most...he was a good man.

What my father learned and tried to live by the grace of God is this: it matters not that we face the flames of adversity; for adversity, itself, is inevitable. Rather, what matters are how those flames forge the mettle of our character. And, it matters not whether we stumble; for, as humans, we are bound to fall. Rather, what matters is, having learned from our faults, that we stand again and finish the race well.

Through the Refiner’s fire, my father’s character was forged with humility, for he understood that “the Lord gives undeserved kindness to the humble.” He knew that our days on Earth are given on “borrowed” time, so he lived each one as his last. And on his final day, he showed neither fear nor regret; rather, while in the arms of his beloved wife he spent his final breaths giving thanks with the words: “I love you... love you...I love you.”

To the end he endured. He was a good husband, an endearing father and grandfather, a trusted friend, and for me, an unforgettable hero, for he finished his race well.

Comments: I enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 17, 1951 and was part of an Army "experiment" which amounted to moving enlistees (mostly 17 and 18 year olds) from all over the country in early 1951 to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii where we were given basic training, reduced by 4 weeks. It was alleged that this "experiment" was designed to quickly replenish the significant loss of lives in US Army fighting units in Korea, losses ostensibly caused by the irresposible mis-management of Senior Military, noticeably Gen MacArthur, by President Truman. Our cadre were members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a Japanese unit, which had fought with uncommon distinction and valor in WWII. After basic training, we were given a week off in Hawaii, with direct orders not to leave the island to return to the mainland during that week. We were then transported to Japan where we were armed/outfitted at Camp Drake and were transported to Korea where we were then loaded onto LSTs and entered Korea via the waters of Inchon, in the vicinity of the 38th parallel. Blacks were dispatched to fighting units in the 24th Infantry Regiment and immediately were engaged with the enemy with those units. Not long afterward, the 24th was disbanded by Presidential Order, as an act to end the use of segregated units in the U.S. Military. I was assigned to an infantry company in the 35th Infantry Regiment where I was in operations with that Regiment until I was rotated 10 1/2 months later, in the middle of June, 1952, reaching Adak, Alaska aboard a transport ship on July 4, 1952. I served out my remaining 3 year enlistment at Fort Lewis, WA, being discharged on April 16, 1954 in the grade of E-5, Staff Sergeant. I was frostbitten in my hands, and then later in my feet. Following the distribution of "Mickey Mouse" boots, practically all frostbitten feet came to an end. I later lost my eye sight and sent to a Receiving Station to be treated. About 2 - 3 weeks later, my sight returned and I was returned to my unit. Paper work to award me the Purple Heart was never processed and the medal was never awarded. Attempts to correct this have been unsuccessful due to the lost of my personnel records.

Keywords: Entered Korea via Inchon in fall of 1951. Was assigned later to an Infantry Company in the 1st or 2nd Battalion. Because of the fire in 1963 at the Personnel Records Center in St Louis, I have been unable to get a copy of my military records.

Comments: My father, James B. Williams, Sr. was a POW who died while captured. I was born in May, 1949 and his unit was sent to Korea about a year later. He won a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while serving in Korea and I am very, very proud of him.

He and my mother wrote to each other almost everyday while he was on the frontlines---or at least as often as he could. On or about December 2, 1950 he was captured by the enemy and died about six months later---as far as we know. His last letter was sometime in January of 1951 written while in captivity and under duress. The letter was very brief and acknowledged that he was now a POW.

I hardly knew him and although I have pictures of he and I (as a baby), I never really got to know him. If the reader has any information about him or his time in Korea or the POW camps, I would love to hear from you at the e-mail address above.

Also, if anyone can tell me how to get his military records and a replacement Bronze Star and Purple Heart, I would really appreciate it

Comments:
In about 1962 quite by accident I ran accross him at Fort Monroe, VA. He was a Maj. General at that time. I do not know if he advanced to higher rank. I would be interested in knowing if he is well and would like to contact him

Keywords: Col. Williams was Div. Supply Officer during mid 1952. I rotated back to USA. I think he took over command of 27 Inf. Regt.
