Dirty Thirty 12/24/1952

Comments: "Twas the day before Christmas, and all through the bay, Not a vessel was stirring, but the Dirty Thirty got under way"

The above ditty was by the ship's cook on 12/24/52.

We were Air Force but depended on the Navy to transport us from Stoneman, CA to Anchorage, Alaska. Five days. The fourth day was a very bad storm. Cars broke chains in the hold and we were told the ship had exceeded the angle at it was expected to turn turtle and stay upside-down. We were lucky. Thanks, Navy.

Comments: I'm looking at my father's framed certificate, inducting him into the Domain of the Golden Dragon. 25 May 1954. He was on board the Thomas Jefferson. I would appreciate any history you could share of any of his service. The only stories he ever told me were that once he sent back a supply order that he didn't think the ship really needed (a court-martial offense?) and once in Pearl when he kept a CPO from diving into water off the ship that had some sharks patrolling below. "Jay," as he was called, studied through the Navy at LSU and Duke. He's buried at Fort Snelling in Minnesota, our home state. Thank you for your service.

Comments: My father, Radarman First Class (RD1) LaVarr D. (Woody) Woodbury was a principal in the radar section on the USS Thomas Jefferson (APA 30) from September 1950 to January 1952. His awards include three (3) battle stars for action in Korea on board the Jefferson. The ship was awarded four (4) battle stars during the Korean War. Does anyone know the names of the four campaigns?

Comments: In Dec.1951 I was stationed at Camp Stoneman,Calif in the U.S. Air force with orders to be transferred to Korea. My Orders in part read;Project EVIL-FEAF(FAR EASTERN AIR Force). At the last minute my Orders were changed to Eielsen AFB North of Fairbanks,Alaska. On Dec.26,1951 we were loaded up(about 1000 Troops) on the USS Thomas Jefferson and headed North.I was dropped off I believe near Steward,Alaska(about JAN.15th-and late as we encountered a terrible storm in the Pacific Northwest and floundered for awhile) and The Jefferson contined on toward Korea.I believe the Russians had the ship under our Lend-Lease Program during WW2 and then it was returned to us in 1948.?? I hope this helps your history. Best Regards--Robert A Hall

Comments: The Jefferson was a u.s.navy ship. a attack transport. She made landings at Normandy , Salerno , Okinawa , Inchon , Iwon . then became a troop and dependent carrier , till she was placed out of commission and struck from the navy list on 1 oct 1958 and scrapped in 1978.

So long to a gallant ship , I have more info on her if any one is interested.

Would sure like to have some info on where to find some info on her duty from 1951 to 1954

I would sure like to hear from any of the fellows who were in the [A] div , who wre assigned to the evaporators , where I spent 3-1/2 yrs.
