LOOKING FOR INFO ON MY GRANDFATHER'S SERVICE TIME

EZRA STEVENS wrote on March 11, 2014

Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER

Comments: To whom it may concern,

My grandfather served on the U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson (APA-30), I was always told he was an underwater welder, but the more I look into it the more I find out he was much more than just a repairman. his name was Donald C. Stevens, he served until 1947, fully released in 1948. he died a few years ago, but refused to tell me anything of his military days prior to his death, saying he was sworn to secrecy aside from telling me I had family in Cuba I'd never meet since 'the women get whiter and whiter every day' . a few months after his death I got his discharge papers and confirmed he served in Guantanamo as well as other bases with his ship being the (APA-30). I don't know anything other than what I've been able to piece together over the years, some of it possibly false information. If you are willing to share information, I am more than willing to receive it; both good, and bad.

thanks for your time.

Comments: "Twas the day before Christmas, and all through the bay,
Not a vessel was stirring, but the Dirty Thirty got
under way"

The above ditty was by the ship's cook on 12/24/52.

We were Air Force but depended on the Navy to transport
us from Stoneman, CA to Anchorage, Alaska. Five days.
The fourth day was a very bad storm. Cars broke chains
in the hold and we were told the ship had exceeded the
angle at it was expected to turn turtle and stay
upside-down. We were lucky. Thanks, Navy.

Comments: I'm looking at my father's framed certificate, inducting him into the Domain of the Golden Dragon.
25 May 1954.
He was on board the Thomas Jefferson. I would appreciate any history you could share of any of his service.
The only stories he ever told me were that once he sent back a supply order that he didn't think the ship really needed (a court-martial offense?) and once in Pearl when he kept a CPO from diving into water off the ship that had some sharks patrolling below.
"Jay," as he was called, studied through the Navy at LSU and Duke.
He's buried at Fort Snelling in Minnesota, our home state.
Thank you for your service.

His awards include three (3) battle stars for action in Korea on board the Jefferson. The ship was awarded four (4) battle stars during the Korean War. I hope this helps your history. Best Regards--Robert A Hall
