DIRTY THIRTY 12/24/1952 |
| HAL SWIER wrote on July 9, 2007 City and State: OCALA FL Unit: Service or Relationship: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: "Twas the day before Christmas, and all through the bay, Not a vessel was stirring, but the Dirty Thirty got under way" The above ditty was by the ship's cook on 12/24/52. We were Air Force but depended on the Navy to transport us from Stoneman, CA to Anchorage, Alaska. Five days. The fourth day was a very bad storm. Cars broke chains in the hold and we were told the ship had exceeded the angle at it was expected to turn turtle and stay upside-down. We were lucky. Thanks, Navy. Keywords: |

| PAT OCKEN wrote on May 27, 2007 City and State: SUPERIOR WI Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I'm looking at my father's framed certificate, inducting him into the Domain of the Golden Dragon. 25 May 1954. He was on board the Thomas Jefferson. I would appreciate any history you could share of any of his service. The only stories he ever told me were that once he sent back a supply order that he didn't think the ship really needed (a court-martial offense?) and once in Pearl when he kept a CPO from diving into water off the ship that had some sharks patrolling below. "Jay," as he was called, studied through the Navy at LSU and Duke. He's buried at Fort Snelling in Minnesota, our home state. Thank you for your service. Keywords: Paul J. A. Ocken |
