The 452nd BW, a Reserve wing ordered to active service in August 1950, moved from California to Japan during October-November. Arriving at Itazuke AB on October 25, the wing's air echelon began B-26 combat operations over Korea two days later. Its ground echelon arrived by ship in mid-November. The wing, under Fifth Air Force control, was briefly attached to the 8th FBW at Itazuke AB and to 314th Air Division while at Miho AB, Japan. The 452nd BW inactivated on May 10, 1952 and returned to Reserve status.

Note from Ted Baker, a former pilot for unit:

"One other thing, the 452nd Bomb Wing became the 17th Bomb Wing in early 1952. It was a paper transfer, men and aircraft remained at K-9.
By law, the 452nd Reserve Bomb Wing had to be deactivated (on paper) at
the termination of their federal recall period and given a new
designation."

On July 1, 1951, while on a night intruder mission, his aircraft was shot down over the southern end of Wanson Harbor, North Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Comments: My uncle served in the early stages of the war. I am working on the family history and I understand he was lost somewhere in 1950 or 1951. Georgie Soto was born in Pomona/Chino California. His brother Charlie Soto (Army) and Paul DeSoto (Navy) He served in World War II and according to his brothers and sisters was in the Sicily, Italy, Normandy and until the end of the war. Since it would seem the 452nd was an Air Force Reserve unit mobilized, I am not sure what he did from 1945 through until he was lost in Korea. Family history says the stayed in the service after the war, so I have requested his service records to fill in this gap as only one of my aunts (his sisters) stills survives. I do know that his name is on the Korean War Memorial. Old photographs, stories, anything, or anyone knowing of Georgie would be quite helpful. One flight mechanic I met by chance, did not like Georgie as it would seem he was very good a poker and the poor mechanic was not. Before his eldest sister passed, she talked to the radioman that talked to his plane just before the explosion, who indicated that there was only silence after the explosion. He also told her it would probably be better if he died in the explosion, rather than being captured by the North Koreans. She understood what he meant by that. Many thanks to all of you, especially those who served our country and their family members that keep their memories alive.

Comments: I was stationed with the 618th AC and WS at Miho from May,1949 until the 452nd ran us out.
I was transfered to our radar site 7 at Moriyama above Miho. (we're the guys who got you there and brought you back)
I have a question! You had a pilot who used to play Yankee Doodle Dandy on a harmonica over Dog channel on returning from a mission. I've tried for 50yrs to find out who it was.
I checked at the 50th reunion but nobody seemed to know anything.
Does anybody out there know what I'm talking about?
I would welcome any information.
Regards
George Davis

Comments: I was stationed at K-9 from March, 1952 to April, 1953 serving as Ground Safety Officer within the Personnel Office--also did some time as Training Officer working under Lt.Col. Moley. During much of my time at K-9, Col. Clinton Wasem was Wing Commanding Officer. Col. Nye preceded Col. Wasem and my memory tells me that Col. Nye was shot down and lost forever during a daring daylight B-26 raid north of the 38th parallel. Prior to Col.Nye's command, the Wing was designated the 452nd Bomb Wing under the command of Col.Albert Fletcher. Col. Fletcher was killed when he augered into the side of a mountain, flying a B-26, on his way to Tokyo--my recollection is that he flew into the side of Mt. Fuji in heavy weather, but my memory could stand repair on this. Col. Fletcher was great to me when I reported for duty at K-9 as a young 2nd Lt.--I admired him greatly, especially the way in which he conducted Wing Staff meetings every morning. Another super guy I recall was Col. Lindley. His first name eludes me just now, but he was much admired by all who knew him. He worked under Col. Wasem if I remember correctly. As Ground Safety Officer, my right hand guy was M/Sgt. James R. McClure, or "Mac." He became a lifelong friend and for those who might have known him, I regret to say that "Mac" passed away down at his home in Montgomery, Alabama about 3 years ago. I still have quite a number of colored slide photos that I took at K-9 and in the general Pusan area and I occasionally take a look at them and remember the days and the time spent in South Korea--and remember Kim-Chee, Jo-Sans, etc. And it's fun to remember, too, the "R. and R." trips to Japan--Nagoya, Fukuoka, and, of course, Tokyo.
It will be greatly appreciated if anyone who served at K-9 during the time-frame referred to
will get in touch with me and share some of your rememberances with me.
