Units

98th Bombardment Group (preceeded Wing not operational after 4/51)

343rd Bomb Squadron
344th Bomb Squadron
345th Bomb Squadron

On April 1, 1951, the 98th BW deployed "on paper" without personnel or equipment to Yokota AFB, Japan, where it assumed the tactical role of the 98th BG. Interdiction of enemy communications, support of UN ground forces, and propaganda leaflet drops constituted the B-29 wing's missions. In January 1952, to avoid daylight interception by enemy fighters, the 98th BW began to fly night missions almost exclusively. In the spring, its B-29s attacked railway installations and airfields then in the summer industrial targets. The wing's last bombing mission, flown on July 25, 1953, was followed on the last day of the war with a propaganda leaflet drop.

I'm trying to get more information about the aircraft he served on and the crew. Some of the last names of crew members I can remember are Candiotto, Flint and Walters.

Comments: Greetings from Texas. I am the son of the late Marvin E. King who was a right gunner on Captain Jim Chenault's B-29, 371st BS, 307th BG.

On April 12, 1951, they were flying behind the 98th BG on their way to the bridges over the Yalu at Sinuiji & Antung. (98th, 307th and 19th in that order headed to the target.)

Does anyone in the 98th have any details or memories of that mission twould share with me? I am writing a book based on Dad's memoirs and records. Please help.

Dad (Marvin King) was captured that day along with 6 of his crewmates: Dan Oldewage, Hank Metz, Leonard Moree Jr., Bill Hannemann, Joe Hearn and George Knego.

Thank you!!

Comments: My father, Charles W. Gallant, Jr. was a B-29 pilot with
the 98th B.W./245th B.S., stationed in a Japanese Island
in 1952. Did 10 missions, bailed out once. Had more
pilots than planes, his crew was broken up when they got
there. Flew 2 pilots and 1 co-pilot per mission. One was
PIC on the way out, the other was PIC on the return. I
would welcome information from anyone who knew him. The
nose art of his plane (not sure whether it was the one
that went down) had tail number 462237 (on a carved scale
model that he had made of it). Nose art featured a
beautiful girl in a red corset that was precariously
about to fall off of her. The caption on the nose art was
Tondemonai, which he told me was Japanese for It'll
never happen. I have photos of the plane. Unpainted top,
black underneath: by then strategic bombing was only done
at night. He told me he was never attacked by a fighter,
but he saw a dogfight between 86's and Migs once.
Although designed as a high altitude bomber, my
recollection from him is they flew low enough that flak
was an issue.

Comments: My father, Harold Gene Ryan, TSGT USAF Ret. passed away 23Aug2014 in his sleep. He served as the tail gunner on the B-29 Tailwind (1721) from 1950-51. My father spoke very little of his experiences in Korea, but he did love serving as a member of a bomber aircrew. Among his photos are the nose art of every bomber in the group, as well as some strike photos. His memorial will be next week in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. It is my intention to scan and digitize all of those photos and donate them to The Korean War Project. If anyone who view this post flew with my dad I would love to hear any stories you may have.

during WW2. He was a 1st Lt. Navigator/Bombadier in the
98th Bombardment group. I have a picture of him with
his plane and his name in the front nose spot. On the
side of the plane are the numbers B-207 on the front is
2207 and the tail number is 462 207 H. I think it was a
B-29. He passed away many years ago but I have recently
been given a large file of old records from his time in
the military. He never spoke of his time overseas but I
have found that he was presented an Air Medal and I
wondered if there was anyone that may have information
on or know where information could be found on why he
received this medal. Any guidance would be greatly
appreciated. We are trying to piece together his
military career. If there is any further info that
would help, please let me know. I would really like to
be able to follow the campaign history of the 98th to
be able to understand better his personal role in the
war. Thank you in advance for your time and for your
service to our country.

Comments: The 98th Bomb Group / Wing Veterans Association wecomes all 98thers as regular members and relatives as associate members. Associate members have all the rights and previleges as regulars except voting on business matters.

We have more than 1,400 active members from 1942 to the present 98th Range Wing, which is now on active duty at Nellis AFB, NV.

Other elements of the 98th that are still active ,are the 344th Air Refueling Squadron and 415th Test Flight Squadron.

We pubish a quartery news letter, Hold an annual reunion, Maintain a master roster of personnel with some 3,000 names and maintain an active WEB SITE www.pyramidiers.com.

You can view the history, reunion data, suggested reading list of books about the 98th, and post your information on the message board there.
