33rd Bombardment Squadron

Detached from the 22nd BW, the 22nd BG deployed its B-29s in early July 1950 from March AFB, California, to Okinawa, where it came under the control of FEAF Bomber Command (Provisional). On July 13, the group flew its first mission, against the marshaling yards and oil refinery at Wonsan, North Korea. By October 21, it had amassed fifty-seven missions against the enemy, attacking bridges, factories, industrial targets, troop concentrations, airfields, marshaling yards, communications centers, and port facilities. During four months of combat, the 22nd BG flew 335 sorties with only fourteen aborts and dropped over 6,500 tons of bombs. It redeployed to the United States in late October and November 1950.

Stations

Comments: Does anyone remember Robert G. Graham from the 2nd and 19th bomb squadrons out of March AFB around 1953-1962? I am interested in any info at all. He died when I was 9 and I would appreciate anyone's memories of him. He was involved in operation plumbob in Nevada. He was later the last commander of the 19th Special operations Squadron which was disbanded after he died. Thank you to all of you that served under those stressful times.

Comments: Joe Stroud is my father. He flew 25 missions from Kadena in a B-29, tail # 821: 22nd Bomb Group, 15th Air Force from 1950-1952. He was an Electronics Countermeasure Operator.

While taxiing for a mission out of Kadena, he saw an American with another unit preparing for a mission back into a propeller, killing him instantly.

We are looking for any information related to this event, or possibly anyone who flew with Joe.

Thank you,

Jeff

Comments: Until this book, very little had been published about B-29 combat operations during the Korean War, and most of what was written was either incomplete or riddled with misconceptions. Having flown 28 combat missions as a B-29 copilot and witnessed the aftermath of the Namsi debacle I was anxious to set the record straight.
In doing so, I spent seven years researching and writing about a battle that lasted fifteen minutes--yet forever changed the way air warfare would be waged.
Black Tuesday Over Namsi, a True History of the Epic Air Battle of the Korean War can be ordered from the publisher, Heritage Books by calling 800-876-6103 or online at heritagebooks.com.
Reviews of Black Tuesday Over Namsi can be accessed through my web site, B-29s in the Korean War. Readers have so far responded that they were surprised and delighted. I hope you will be too and look forward to hearing from you.

Comments: I held a special secret clearance during most of the Korean War.
One Tuesday morning (my one day off a week) I was shaken roughly awake. "You have just volunteered. Pack enough stuff for three days."

The Captain picked three of us.

I was taken in a truck to the flight line an put aboard a C-124 out of Castle AFB, CA. The plane was loaded with pastboard boxes.

We sat on a pile of old blankets and packing cloth. We landed at Hickham Field to refule and eat. Our final landing was at Pusan, Korea.

Our job was to unload the Secret boxes and then to guard them. We had M 1 Garands and they gave us Army helmets.

The second day a truck came and we loaded the boxes in the truck, put away the M 1 rifles and climbed aboard the C-124 to re-trace our steps back to Travis AFB.

So I spent 62 hours in Korea in the spring of 1952 only because I had a Secret clearance.

40 years later I found out what was in the boxes. A transmitter/receiver tracking device. The GIs would take a unit out at night and hide it in the brush. The exact bush had been surveyed in somehow during the day.
When the Chinese or N. Koreans fired a cannon, it would trip the two boxes. That gave the guys back behind the lines a triangel -- from the angles and the hypotenuse they could figure out exatly were the enemy cannon was and blow it up.

The GIs would retrieve the boxes and move them to a new spot that night.

I got an extra 100 bucks mustering out pay for being "overseas" and I got the UN Korean medal as well. Weird huh!

Comments: I am researching photos (to Borrow ) and information regarding the two B-29 deployments of the 22 BW.
The 22nd visited the U.K' from Nov 1949 to Feb.1950
during this first deployment its B-29's carried tail code " Triangle I " and the three sqaudrons deployed to 2nd- RAF Marham., 19th- RAF Sculthorpe, and 33rd- RAF Lakenheath.
During or just before deploying to Korea in July 1950 the 22nd began to change its tail code to " Circle E "
When visiting the U.K., again in Sept to Dec.1951, the B-29's retained this tail code and some aircraft with Korean War mission markings ,
The squadrons were located at 2nd-RAF Mildenhall.,19th-
RAF Sculthorpe., and the 33rd-RAF Wyton and Lakenheath.
I would be very grateful for any information and the loan of any photos please concerning these two deployments for my book about the B-29 and B-50 deployments to the U.K.,1947-1953.
sincerely,
R.Robinson.

My last 6 months months were quite slow since the B-47 were leaving and the B-52s from Castle AFB were coming in. Played on the Squadron Basketball team. Live just outside the base in Sunnymeade.
