Units

Replaced the 19th Bomb Group on June 1st, 1953, absorbing the 19th Bomb Group

28th Bombardment Squadron
30th Bombardment Squadron
93rd Bombardment Squadron

On June 1, 1953, the 19th BW moved on paper from Andersen AB, Guam to Okinawa, absorbing the personnel and equipment of the 19th BG. Until the end of the war, the wing exercised control over the tactical squadrons, which maintained the B-29 interdiction program and provided some close air support for UN ground forces. In the course of the war, the 19th Group and 19th Wing flew almost 650 combat missions.

Comments: On Sunday, June 10, 2012, I met a Korean War veteran
who flew in a B-29 called Hauling Ass. I was unable to
get his name, unit, or wing, but I was able to see one
of his service scrap books while viewing the CAF B-29,
FIFI. Would anyone have any further info on this
particular plane? I am a modeler and would like to
build this particular B-29 with the authentic nose art
and tail numbers and insignia.

Comments: My RAAF Flying Log Book confirms that B29-461888 flew from Guam on 18 May 1953 to visit the Royal Australian Air Force Units at Momote airfield Manus Island. With three other RAAF P51 Mustangs I flew in formation with 1888 during his fly over.I am in possession of photos of us all together. Crewmen of the B29 took many photos of us in our Mustangs out of the large hatch on the starboard side of their aircraft.
We were led to understand that 1888 ran out of fuel on final and the Captain was lost in the susequent ditching. We were most upset.
My big question is this- are any of the many photos which must have been taken that fateful day still in existence? It was a long long time ago.
Recently I made a similar enquiry to "Sallyann" but have not heard back as yet.
Yours very sincerely
Ronald Purssey. Brisbane. Australia.

Comments: I arrived at Kadena a 2nd Lt. Nav spare in ~ July 1953. I was assigned 30th Bomb Sq. Supply Officer. Sq. Commander was Lt. Col Jones. Crewed up 6 months later with Lt. Col. Brown, A/C, Wing HQ. Co pilot was 2nd Lt. Anderson. Bombardier was Maj Sheldon (sp?).

All 3 B-29 Wings (2 Kadena, 1 Tachikawa) returned to Davis Monthan ~ May/June 1954.

I shared a 20th AF Quanset Hut with Lt. Sullivan (Nav).

I'd like to renew memories - especially the crew that dropped down on the deck and surprised an aircraft carrier by dropping gear and simulating a landing approach ~ during a fleet interception exercise.

Keywords: B-29 Crash at South End of Main Runway in 1953. Only crash in that year. Helped pull two officers out of plane as fire commenced. Three more removed by Medical Team. Flight Surgeon Team worked on all. I was ordered back to duty. Orders to Okinawa and Japan ensued. I need to know if the survivors made it to recovery. It is always on my mind. With Veteran's Day approaching I would like to have closure. Anyone with knowledge regarding this please contact me. With much appreciation.
