Comments: I’m the grandson of S.F.C. L.R. Van Tassel, tank commander for the 3rd Infantry, 64th
heavy tank battalion, C company, Tank #13, I believe. I’m just trying to learn as much
as I possibly can about my grandfather and his service. While I’ve only heard bits and
pieces of his career, I’m curious if there is anyone out there whom served with my
grandpa and can share some insight/stories. I have some interesting pictures and some
stories I could share as well. Thank you and Thank you for your service!!

Comments: I’m trying to find anyone who served with my Grandfather, Bud Church. He mentioned a man named John Morrow as being a close friend through his time there. Grandpa Bud did two stints there, back to back, with a break to go to Koje Do as a guard or something of the sort. There are stories there too that he shared. Anyone who knew my Grandpa, please contact me.

Comments: My grandfather Richard C. Stauch was promoted sgt first class and inserted into 64th tank battalion as a tank commander because of his experience working on heavy farm equipment back home. He told me the unit was mixed race, the african americans in his unit expected him to be discriminatory to them but he told them, I put my pants on just like you...he was unaware at the time that the south treated african americans the way they did.
He was sent home because he refused to drop charges against another soldier for mis-behaving.

Comments: In 1955 and early 1956 until my discharge, I served as Communications Chief of C company, maintaining the 3 transceivers and the intercom system in each of the tanks and APC's of the company (tube radios, all of them), plus the company's field telephones and the twisted-pair wire to connect them with other companies and battalion HQ. At that time the Korean war was over, and the 3rd Infantry Division was garrisoned out in the boondocks of Fort Benning, with the 64th Tank Battalion still attached to it. In those days, the name of the battalion did not include the word Heavy or Medium. It had 4 companies: A, B, C, and HQ. My recollection is that each of A, B, and C Companies had 8 tanks, two of which were the older M47's. and the rest M48's, all equipped with 90-mm guns. Each company also had an APC , and HQ co had several of them. We spent a lot of time driving those tanks and APCs through the red dirt of the backwoods at Benning. Of course, C Company was last, so we ate a lot of that red dirt thrown up by our comrades ahead of us in the column. The highlight of my time with this unit was participation in maneuvers in Louisiana. Our own topkick never poked his head out the hatch of his APC during our traverse of Mississippi both ways. He said he was wanted in that state, and that was the reason. But maybe it was just that all that corn likker made him lazy. The governor of Alabama cleaned up Phenix City, just over the river from Columbus, while I was stationed at Fort Benning, That was a great disappointment to the single guys, but I was married anyway, so it didn't matter to me. Thanks for listening.

Comments: Good morning. My dad, James Reamy (Sgt) served in the Korean War
in the 64th Heavy Tank Battalion. He was in the first integrated
unit. He served with someone having the last name of Jones. I
have sketchy information because he does NOT talk about his
service. (He earned a Purple Heart but refused it. It wasn't
until last year in 2012 that my mom convinced him to accept it.)

Does anyone else who served there have any skin ailments that
have not been diagnosed properly? My dad has been suffering
terribly with an itchy skin rash for about a year. He had been
going to the VA medical center and they gave him tons of
ointments and creams for things like: scabies, dry skin, old
skin, dermatitis, eczema, etc. Nothing worked. We had him see a
private dermatologist. No help. He just went to see an
allergist yesterday...no allergies present. I hate to see him
suffering so. He is scratching himself raw and leaving scabs.
He has a variety of other health issues, but this is the one that
is bothering him the most. I read online that soldiers were
sprayed with DDT routinely during the Korean War. I am no
expert, but THAT can't be good. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you to all who served and to those who continue to fight
for our freedom today.

He tells me stories about the last part of his
service. He talks about a horrific battle near a
river. His platoon leader was killed, and he was put
in charge until the end of the battle. His friend
Pasqualli(?) was also killed. My father remembers
blowing up a large ridge and seeing an entire
hillside disapear. He goes into great detail about
this battle, and I can recite it by memory, but I am
not putting all the details here out of respect for
the readers. If anyone would be interested in
talking to me about this, I would appreciate it. My
father is going through a terrible time with PTSD,
and he is stuck in this battle. I would like to
learm more about it so I can help him.

Perhaps if I tell the short story, maybe somebody remembers him. He was with 2 or 3 other soldiers the day in March 1957 when he came to DURMERSHEIM to meet up with some girls to party. Apparently he had a girlfriend (who has passed away a few years ago) in Durmersheim who he was visiting frequently and perhaps left back to the US in either late 1957 or Spring of 1958.
