Comments: I am just adding a little of my Army history on this site. I was assigned to Aco. the first part of Feb. 1963 after almost 4 weeks at sea on the General Danial S. Sultan then landed at Inchon. It was so cold that our breath would freeze and fall to the ground as we breathed. Naw Just kidding, but it was cold. Anyway I was the gunner on A-34 for Plt. Sgt Overshaun from the day I signed in until about May. It was about then that our company was to be reassigned to the 1st CAV Div. on the DMZ and to be the only tank company on the DMZ at that time. When we left Camp Beavers, the 40th became the 1/73 armor and it went from 5 line companys to just 3. Our new designation was Aco, 2/15th Armor and for about 2 months I was the 1sg. jeep driver then I persuaded him to put me back on a tank. He did and I was the driver of A-22 until my new T.C. was put in charge of the mess hall, at that time I was a PFC but we were short on NCOs so i was the new TC for A-22 until I left in mid Jan. 1964. When I got to Korea I was 17 1/2 years old, but I felt like I was more like 24 when I left the company. I don't regret any of my 3 tours in Korea, 1973-74, 1976-77, and if I had it to do again I would. I am now 68 and my health isn't like it should be or was, and I just wanted to put this up hoping someone will read this and know that my entire 24 1/4 years in the army was either on tanks or a first sergeant of a tank company. That was what I wanted from the age of 6 and with Gods help and blessings, I completed my life long dream. May God bless all my fellow soldiers I served with and the ones that didn't get to come home. I love the Army and being a TANKER is the greatest thing that could ever happen to a young man.

Keywords: My first platoon in Korea I was given the nick name, GRAVELS because of my last name, PITTS. Later when I was a platoon sergeant I was known as POP because I was usually either the oldest or most experienced tanker in the platoon. Then when I became First Sergeant, I was known as TOP, FIRST SOLDIER and many other names I won't post here. Each of my tours to Korea had an incident or two where some troops were killed or wounded by the north koreans but the news only made it back to the states in 76 when Operation PAUL BUNYON took place. I had so many good friends through out all of those years I can't remember all. First tour there was Pfc Cook, Pfc Kingrey, SFC Wilson, SSG Ware, SSG Jackson, SP/5 John Battle, SFC Young, 1SG Godwin, CAPT. Lacy M. Jackson, 1SG Curtis, SFC Mathews. Second tour C Troop 4/7 CAV at Camp Rice later renamed Camp Garry Owen, was, SSG Ted Henson, SSG Ed Woldgang, SFC Jack Miller, SSG Stanley Mack, my driver Pfc, John Leontif. My third tour, C co. 1/72 Armor Camp Casey Plt Ldr. 2nd LT Des Longchamps Jr., SFC West, SSG. Ray Sturdivant, a true friend and brother, SSG Bill Wolfe. My mind just can't remember all when I want to. But my career started on the DMZ of Korea and ended on the East German border with the 3 Sqdrn 11th ACR.

Comments: Looking for anyone who recalls the M-45 tanks
assigned to 31 Regt. These were the old M-26
Pershings refitted with 105 howitzers for infantry
support.

Some sources say only 6th Tk Bn 24th Div had them
but I recall seeing them at Tong du chon (Camp
Casey)...up the road from Tank Co, 31st Inf Regt
before they reclassified us to Co E 2 MBT 40th
Armor.

Comments: Arrived in Korea mid Sept 1956, Tong-du-chon. We were redisignated Co E 2 MTB 40 Armor when the Army went pentomic and sent to Camp beavers...we had to completely level the hill and build the company area, diassembling our quanset huts and reassembling (a joke) them at Beavers. We had beat up M-46s but they were good, solid tanks. In Apri/May of 58, we got M-47s and I left in August. I'm looking for war history of the tank Co and TO and E. I believe it was 73th Tk Bn and had either M-26 or Easy 8 Shermans.

Be happy to hear from anyone.

Bill
