Comments: Hello,
My father George Brilbeck Jr. was in the Air Force from Nov. 1950 -August 1954. I have a partial picture of what I believe to be his training class. He was given special orders (flight) on October of 1952 from Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. I also have a list of the men in the same unit as my dad.
He was also stationed at Smoky Hill AFB in Salina, Kansas. Here he had refresher training in March of 1954.
He was a gunner in the Air Force, flying B-29's..This training I believe was in California. He was also part of the 45th Bomber Squadron and the 40th Bomber Wing. Any information or photographs would be appreciated.

Comments: My resume reads much like that of Bill Hamilton. I entered the Air Force in 1948 took my basic and A and E Mechanics school at Sheppherd AFB. I arrived to Japan April of 1950 and was assigned to the 40th Fighter Intercepter Squadron. We were part of the ADC at that time. When South Korea was invaded a number of people from our unit were sent over as advisors. When the Uninted States officially entered the conflict the whole unit went to Ashiya where we converted back to the F51's while flying missions accross the Japan sea. When I arrived in April of 1950 the 40th had reciently changed from 51's to 80's so most of our pilots and personnel were already proficient in this aircraft making the switch to this more suitable aircraft fairly routine. We went from there to Pohang for a while, did a tactical retreat to Japan for a while then back to Korea where we remained until March of 1951 when the 40th fighter Squadron was disbanded and our personnel were obsorbed by other units. I was returned to Yokota Air Base where we had been when Korea started and reassigned to the 6161st Maint Sqdn.

Comments: I joined the USAF in December 1948 from Eugene, Oregon. I went to basic and A and E school at Sheppard AFB, then was shipped to Yokoto AFB i n Japan where I was assigned to the 40th FBS in the 35th Fighter Bomber Group. When the Korean War started in June, 1950, we were shipped to Ashiya where we staged for a short time with F-80s flying to Korea. We were then sent to Pohang where we were converted to F-51s. We were driven out of Pohang and returned to Taegu for a short time then shipped to Tsuiki on Ashiya in Japan. We then came back to Pohang and then to North Korea in October or November of 1950. The Chinese came into action and pushed the Marines form the Chosen Reservoir, and we sat and watched the marines march past us on their way out of the mountains. Our planes strafed the mountain passes so the marines could escape. I was transfered from the 40th to the 67th after we came back from North Korea and left Korea in December of 1951. I'd love to hear from any of the old groups. I have a bunch of photos that might have some of you in there, and I'll be happy to send them via snail m ail or email to you.

best,

Bill Hamilton

Comments: I was assigned to the 40th FIS Yokota AB,Japan when the Korean War started. Shortly after the war started we were sent to Ashiya AB in southern Japan. About July 8th, we were sent to Pohang AB, Korea. We watched our F-51's take off, fly to Pohang and strafe and bomb Pohang across the bay. Towards the middle of August, our aircraft strafed on take-off, made a 360 turn and strafed again. The missions lasted 25 minutes from the time the pilots climbed into the cockpit, flew the mission and climbed out of the aircraft.

Comments: FYI: The 40th Fighter Squadron is alive and well and serving as a Flight Test Squadron at Eglin AFB, Florida.

Also, as the historian for the 35th Fighter Wing I am interested in any and all information any veterans or family members would like to share. The official histories from that time are often vague and are incomplete at best. Please contact me if you are willing and able to fill in the gaps.

Thanks, SSgt C. Mike Sibley
