1953, ten miles south of Songjin, the USS Irwin DD-794
took a enemy shrapnel explosion in her main-mast,
from an estimated 80 rounds, which seriously wounded
Captain Jack Maginnis(Commander Destroyer Squadron-24)
and four other bridge personnel. The Legion Of Merit
with combat(V), and The Purple Heart Medals were
awarded to Capt.Maginnis by Admirals Robert Briscoe,
and Jocko Clark. Capt.Maginnis had also been awarded
The Bronze Star Medal with combat(V), when he was the
skipper of the USS Winston AKA-94 in the Korean War
in 1950. After a series of three operations on his
wounds, Capt.Maginnis returned to active duty in Jan.
1954. He was later the skipper of the USS Salem CA-139
. Capt.Maginnis was born in 1904, USNA-1927, retired
from the USN in 1957, and died in Feb.1977. Capt.
Jack Maginnis was the senior U.S. Naval officer
wounded in the Korean War.

31 1968 then cross-decked to Seminole (AKA-104) while
offshore DaNang. First in 1st Div for about 5 months
(mess-decked for 90 days) then became an undesignated
striker for Radarman before we left for Vietnam.
Dugan Sewell(2nd Div) and I were selected to become
strikers in the Radar Shack(CIC-Combat Information
Center). I turned 18 yrs old in July'66 drinking
Carling Black Label beer in a sand hooch in Chu Lai,
Vietnam. Our Captain was "Wild Bill" Bennett and he
volunteered us for everything. That was the year we
were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation...

Comments: My father, then ET3 James R. Kilborn from Wollaston, Mass. served aboard WINSTON fm '46-'48. He later left the Navy and got his college degree. The he re-entered the Navy under a USNR program of the Eisenhower Administrations which commissioned him an Ensign. he went on to duty in USS KIDD, USS WHITEHALL and a few other places I do not recall. He is alive and well and now calls central PA home. He doesn't monkey with computers but I would love to meet anyone who sailed with my dad. He finally retrired in 1973 as a LCDR and I now carry on the family tradition as a Cryptologic Chief Petty Officer on the staff of the Commander Second Fleet. I would also really like to know what became of WINSTON? Scrapped or sold? Thanks, Scott D. Kilborn
