Comments: Though I ran the ship's office, I have forgotten most of the names of my old shipmates. Gerald Smeltzer is one who comes to mind. His life was saved by Joe McCusker, mailman, third class, when he fell from a landing net between the ship and an LCM, which was to take him to the dentist. I witnessed the heroic rescue from the bridge and later told Joe's son, Joe Jr. about his dad's heroism. Sadly, I learned that Joe Senior died in l969.

Comments: My father was aboard the USS Montague for 22 months from 1952-1954. It was his second enlistment as he also served in the US Navy from 1948-1950. He was called back for Korea in 1952. He was part of a beach landing invasion near Inchon prior to the famous battle of Inchon. All members aboard his LCVP were killed. He was the only survivor from his amphibious craft. He was the driver. His story is an amazing one. He has only told it once as part of therapy for his post traumatic stress. I have also heard bits and pieces during his flashbacks to that day. I am trying to get more information regarding this battle. He believes it may have been a diversion to detract enemy forces away from Inchon, prior to MacArthurs landing and famous invasion. He was told it never happened and there is no record of such an incident that I can find. He does not talk about it and I can not get any information from him. If you know anyone who was aboard this ship I would like to hear from you. Perhaps together we can piece things together. My father is still alive. Living in S.F., CA. It would also be nice to reunite him with someone who was aboard the Montague during this time. Thank you.
