Comments: Hal: Sgt. Caukins' article in the Leatherneck Magazine 8/03 set this old boy on an interesting search. Then a visit with Hal Barker set me to reading the notes on the Korean War Project. There John Hensons' note helped "jar my memory lose."
I served on the DMZ, at Cherry Point, in November, 1954. If I remember right it was above Libby bridge, at Cherry Point Outpost. We had two or three AmTrac's in support. (My memory is foggy, but beginning to lift I hope.)
Otherwise the rest of the time was at a couple of other locations on the Imjim River, between Freedom and Libby bridges. Between 4/54 until 9/54, then our unit moved to HQ locations, until leaving Korea in 3/55.
If anyone can tell me more about this situation it would be appreciated. Keep the stories coming.

Comments: I arrived in Korea in April 1957 fresh from Ft. Belvoir and the smell of cherry blossoms in the spring. Going through Tokyo, again, cherry blossoms. Arrived in Korea, the stench of rice paddies. In spite of that, I enjoyed my tour there, made friends and learned a lot of things that came in handy in later life and not just in engineering. From watching the Olympics, I see the country has changed -- maybe no more slicky-boys in the middle of night-time requisitions.
This was only 4 years after the war was over. Back then we were in the mode of reconstruction of roads, pipelines, building bridges and hospitals and what ever else was needed to keep the country operating and safe. The winter of 1958 was spent in Chunchon, at minus 20 to -30 degree winter weather. That mission was to build an Honest John missile base for new troops to defend the DMZ. (oops, it may still be classified!) The 44th lived in GP tents with Herman-Nelson heaters, the diesel would freeze up and the fires went out. One shower a week was all that we were allowed. We built missile pads, maintenance buildings and quonset hut barracks in freezing cold weather, and yes the concrete slabs froze sometimes. A detachment stayed behind the following spring and replaced all of the concrete the papa-sans swept up.
At that time the 44th's home was in ASCOM city outside of Inchon, but near Seoul. We lived in quonset huts on the side of a hill. When I arrived the battalion commander was Major Mark C. Carrigan and later LTC Charles L. Steele. Others were Howard Guba, Charlie Staffa and my good friend Danny Fortune, other's names I can't remember.
Those were the good OLD days. Cigarettes were 10 cents a pack, drinks welcome and the chow good. A month's pay got you almost anything you wanted and needed.
My assignments included the operation of a chert quarry and a granite quarry. We had fun blasting rocks over all of the neighborhood. That is what we used for road base and for concrete. One of my first jobs was to put a pipeline across Inchon Bay, what tides! We also built a base for the Turkish Army troops for their rotation under the U.N. and worked on several missions with British engineers.
The fellowship that developed during this tour inspired me to transfer from reserve to the regular army and I stayed for several more years with assignments again at Fort Belvoir and then with CEBMCO on Titan I missile bases.
From what I hear, the 44th is now in Iraq. Bless all of you Broken Hearts wherever you are and keep safe.
If anyone from this era remembers those times, let me know.

At Kaiser we were a Ragtag group of 25, commanded by a warrent officer. We only answered to Hq at Casey. Noone from Hq ever came to visit us, they could'nt stand the lousy chow and miserable living conditions. Only brass to ever visit was General Paul Caraway on a personnel and equip inspection. We had to borrow semi-clean uniforms from the guys who did'nt have to stand inspection and remember the name tags were someone elses. The general didn't stay long just shook his head and said "I hope their equipment doesn't look this bad". Hey Guys! e-mail me.....Carl

Comments: As a Dept. of Army Civilan I served with the 54th Engineer Field Maintenance Company at the 565 Engr. Depot, at ASCOM City, I was incharge of the High Bay Shop where the heavy equipment was repaired/mini-overhaul. We always had on going work from the 44th, lots of short cuts, in return the HE/Motor Officer would have chirt aggregate hauled in on Saturdays which got our outside parking and storage areas out of a foot of mud on rainey days. Re-payment! I would acquire new clutch disks for FWD 20 ton cranes to be installed in 5 ton dump trucks, especlly those that the KATUSA'S drove. One of my best friends was Sgt. Weire, (not shure of spelling)he was H and S CO. Supply Sgt. 1958/59 I think he came from CT. If an one can tell me anything about him or where I can get intouch with him please let me know.
I have a good friend who lives in Avalon, VA. who was in the 44th Engrs. in 1953, we go back to 1947 at 5th student Co. Ft Eustis,VA., Haevy Construction Carpenter School. I'll give his address by mail for those interested.
Lastly, when the 44th , after getting equipment and supples when at Camp Fuchanobe the Broken Heart with the RR Tracks running through the corners was painted inside some of the shop buildings on the walls, support beams, and celing. The 44th built Waewan supply depot, when I was at Taegu, I was in Korea 11 years, kept in touch with all my buddies of 9 years in the Corps of Engrs., made a lot of friends. The name of the game was SCROUNGE and MID NIGHT REQUESITION.
