He is a friend of my father who grew up around this man. His

An unbelievable story of US POW of Korean War
This is an unique story about Mr. Jae-jin Chung,(last
name not sure English spelling, Most Chung or Jung,
Cheong, Jeong and ) former Korean War POW. He was born in
Busan, S. Korea. Unlike other S. Korean POWs, he was
an US army POW. During the War, he was recruited by
US Army and UNC, even if he was Korean nationality.
All American POWs released by the cease-fire
agreement in 1953, but Mr.Chung was held in N. Korean
regime for his Korean blood until 2009 when he
escaped.
Mr. Chung(87, now) called me through his son by the
international telephone at first time me on October
9, 2012 from Busan city, South Korea. And I called
him on October 14, 2012.
With help of his oldest son Ho-sung Chung(52, now)
told his father's story. Mr. J. Chung,POW, escaped
from N. Korea 3 years ago. So Mr. Chung was held for
59 years in N. Korea.
He claimed that he was recruited by US Army during
the Korean War, as an US army private first class of
2 platoon, 4 Company, 3 Battalion, 31 Regiment, 7
Division of US Army under UNC.
At first time, he was recruited at a recruiting site
in Seo-myun, Busan city, S. Korea on August 16, 1950.
On August 20, 1950, he was sent to Yokohama, Japan by
ship operating by Japanese.(Mr. Chung lived in Japan
until liberation of Korea of 1945, he understand
Japanese.)
He was trained in the US military camp near Fuji
Mountain, Japan. At there, he was officially
recruited as an US army, and did belong to 2nd
Platoon, 4 Company in 7 Division after he recorded
his name, DOB, address in Korea and etc. But he could
not remember what his name was recorded in English
Chung, Cheong, Jung, Jeong and ). He received US army
uniform, M-1 riffle and etc.
On September 12, he participated to Incheon Landing-
Operations under leadership of Gen. MacArthur. His
regiment successfully recovered Incheon on September
15. And his regiment advanced to south to attack N.
Korean Army through both side operations. Other UN
Army(mainly US Army) and Korean Army advanced to
north.
And after, his regiment participated to landing
operations in Riwon, Hamkyung-Namdo, North Korea on
Novemeber 2, 1950. After that, his regiment occupied
Hong-won, Buk-chong, Duck-sung and Poong-san in N.
Korea. And after, back to Ham-heong city N. Korea,
until further orders.
At that time Red China involved to the War. On
November 25 or 26, 1950, his battalion was ordered to
rescue his other battalion of 7 Division in siege
situation by Red China Army. His battalion advanced
near Chosin Few.
On Novemeber 30, 1950, unfortunately his battalion
was attacked at Hwang-Chull-Ryoung near Chosin Few N.
Korea by Red Chaina Army. And after all night
fighting, his fellow soldiers almost killed. He was
injured and captured with 12 US soldiers and 13
Koreans(belong to US 7 Division) by Red China Army.
Red Army handed over him and other US soldiers to N.
Korean Army base at Moodong-ri, Jongnam-myun,Kanggye-
gun, Jakang-do N. Korea. N. Korean Army separated and
seated Mr. Chung from US soldiers. And after Mr.
Chung never saw his American fellow soldiers. He had
forced to work with S. Korean POWs at mines and etc.
His hazy memories said that name of his American
captain was James and name of his platoon leader was
Martin. And he remembers his fellow soldiers such as
Brown, Stevens, Jackson, Smith, Johnson and and also his
Korean fellows such as Bong-Ryong Kim, Yang-soon Oh and .
In add, he remembers there were one Philippines.
In 1956, N. Korean Communist government gave him N.
Korean ID. But his social status was lowest in the
country for his past status of POW. He married with
N. Korean woman by arrangement of government officer
who connected to the secret police department. He had
3 sons. At first time, he never told his sons his
past life.
He had one time chance to have dream to return
hometown S. Korea, when N-S Summit Meeting was held
in Pyongyang on June 2000. But his dream was broken.
At his age of 80, he told Ho-sung Chung(52 now), his
oldest son his past life. And he told his son, dear
son, I want to see my hometown before I die. The
oldest son secretly planned to escape N. Korea. He
never discussed his plan with his two brothers and
mother. Because he did not trust his mother who had
watched her husband by order of Secret Police Service.
In 2009, Mr.Chung at last returned to hometown in S.
Korea by effort of his son's respect to father. There
are about 80 former S. Korean POWs who escaped from
N. Korea. Many S. Korean former POWs enjoy to meet
their Korean comrades in S. Korea. But Mr. Chung has
no his comrades. His comrades are American soldiers.
He is a loner in POW' group in Korea. When he saw
other POW's life, he remembers his brotherfood with
American fellows during Korean War.
I heard with tears through the telephone conversation
with Mr. Chung when he told me I really want meet my
American comrades before I die.
I'm now trying to contact with the Korean War
Veterans Association and the Chosin Few to find his
comrades. And I am going to contact with the
Department of Defense POW/MIA. In addition, I am
going to ask for help Hon. Ed Royce, US Congressman
who is closed to us and Hon. Charles Rangel who
participated to Korean War.
If Mr. Chung's story will be found truth, US
Government and UN have the responsibility on his POW'
situation. In 1953, all US POWs and UN POWs
repatriated to home by the cease-fire agreement of
Korean War.
But Mr. Chung was held in N. Korea for 59 years. US
Government and UN have forgotten to rescue Mr. Chung
of US Army private first class. Mr.Chung's story is
Another Forgotten War.
Please help another Private First Class of US Army
Chung!

Comments: Hi -
I've been trying to gather information regarding Purple Heart medal awards for Korean War frostbite victims and was hoping that someone might be able to help.
My dad suffered from frostbite to his feet and was evacuated through a number of US Army field hospitals during the Korean War. Although he (luckily) did not suffer loss of limb from this experience, he did receive a medical disability from the VA when he left the service.
I have been told that some Korean War veterans HAVE received a Purple Heart for their frostbite injuries; however, current military award regulations indicate that frostbite is NOT a qualifying injury. Perhaps the regulations simply changed over the years, I'm not sure...
The big question is: Was frostbite considered a qualifying injury for the Purple Heart medal during the Korean War(?).
Like a lot of Korean War veterans, he never received any kind of recognition--even though he came away from the service with a physical disability. I'd like to apply for this award on his behalf, if possible.
If there are any Korean War veterans who have been in a similar situation, I sure would love to get some feedback on this, it would be helpful.
Thanks -

Comments: Looking for anyone who did Occupation Duty in Korea in 1949. My uncle was with a
unit, don't know which one, that became the 5RCT. Am interested in finding out
what unit he was with. His name was Harry F. Leathers. Served at the end of WWII
as well.

Comments: Hello,
My father passed away this year and was buried in a veteran's plot at a local cememtary. However, we are being told that the records of him being in the military have been destroyed by a fire, so we are having a hard time getting the tomb stone put in place. We have one discharge paper and any other letters from him. However, we are missing one peice of paper that we are suppose to have confirming his honerable discharge. If anyone knew my father, please e-mail me. Thank you.
