Comments: General William F. Dean the Commanding General of the 24th Infantry Division on 8 July 1950, just about 20 days approximately before he goes missing out of Taejon & captured by the North Koreans. He will then spend 3 years in a POW camp in North Korea & I believe also in Manchuria across the Yalu. When he questioned his guards, since it was against the Geneva Rules to ship POWs out of combat area to other countries, the English speaking guard said - "Well, you have your China Town in San Francisco, don't you? This is our China Town".
Read The General Dean Story - well worth the read.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) met their attacks as best as they could, but were grossly under armed & had no air force, no large artillery pieces nor even a navy. The ROK was only 2 years old & its democracy was in direct conflict, ideologically, with the communist north.

to December 1966. It was small only 159 total Army
troops and three of us Weather Air Force Airmen. It
was very cold in Winter with lots of snow and
Ice ,but for a couple of months in summer, the
monsoon season brought heat and rain. Our closest
village right outside the base was SIN SAN NEE About
a mile sout was a villsge called Tongo Ri. Just a
few bars and some shops. The people were very poor,
Rice farmers. Not far away was a big statue carved
out of the mountain called a Momaa-san Papa San
holding a baby san. We had several fixed wing
aircraft called Bird Dogs and Beavers Most of our
aircraft was 3 man Helicopters that were used daily
to fly over the DMZ looking for infiltrators. Very
fond memories of the people in the towns.

It would give the family both tremendous pleasure and a sense of peace to connect with someone who was associated with "Bob's" outfit, even if they didn't know each other. It's just the personal connection that the family continues to try and find.

reassignment, my father never received the purple heart for being wounded in combat from schrapnel. After serving the remainder of his tour he was honorably discharged in California National Guard -40th Infantry Division. He would like to find anyone he served with. Re-entered service in 1950 and fought in Korea with Co. G, 19th Inf Regt, 24th ID. Led 1st Platoon in Operation Nomad. Silver Star at Hill 585, on or about Oct 15-18, 1951. Distinguished Service Cross on Oct 20, 1951 at Hill 770 for leading 3 platoons, then single-handedly taking out three pillboxes on above hillside.
