Comments: The 44th Engineer Battalion

The lineage of the 44th Engineer Battalion dates back to 31 March 1918 when it was organized as the 47th Engineer Railway Maintenance-of-Way Battalion at Camp Sheridan, AL. The battalion served in France during World War I from 1918-1919.
It was redesignated on 1 August 1942 as the 47th Engineer General Service Regiment and earned campaign streamers during World War II in the Central Pacific, Western Pacific and Ryukis. The 2d Battalion of the Regiment was redesignated as the 1397th Engineer Construction Battalion and inactivated in 1946.
On 26 April 1947, the 1397th Engineer Construction Battalion was redesignated the 44th Engineer Construction Battalion and activated on 31 December 1948 at Fort Bragg, NC. While at Camp Fuchinobe, Japan, the unit was notified of it¡¯s pending in the Inchon landing. It became necessary to devise a tactical marking system that was easily seen and recognizable. They selected the ¡°Broken Heart¡± to symbolize the broken hearts of the men, their families, and friends as they departed to the Korean Peninsula. The 44th landed with the invasion force at Inchon on 26 September 1950, building and maintaining roads and bridges for X (US) Corps, fought until the truce, and earned 9 campaign streamers, 3 Meritorious Unit Commendations, and 3 Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations.
In 1976, the unit was redesignated the 44th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy), and was awarded the Army Superior Unit award in 1987. The unit reorganized as the 44th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Corps) in 1990 after subsequent activation of the 82nd Combat Support Equipment Company using equipment and personnel from the battalion. In 1992, as a divisional, mechanized combat engineer battalion organic to the 2nd Infantry Division under the Engineer Restructure Initiative (ERI).
The phrase ¡°At the Breach¡± now symbolizes the mission of the unit: providing combat engineer support to the 4th Squadron 7th Cavalry and the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division on freedom¡¯s frontier.
The battalion has served on the Korean Peninsula for the past 50 years, making it the longest continuously serving battalion on Korea, and committing more than eighty percent of it¡¯s active service to the ¡°Land if the Morning Calm.¡±

Comments: Hi Everyone....

My name is Sheila Cameron, and I am interested in learning any information on my grandfather, James Frederick Wooten, who served with the 44th Combat Engineers during the Korean conflict (Approx. 1950-1952. He is from Beaufort, NC, and currently resides in New Bern, NC. I work with Veterans Affairs, and I am needing information so that I may help him with his claim. He, due to the nature of his experiences there, does not wish to disclose a lot of information about the conflict, and I need this information in order to help him. If anyone knew him, or may have some information or links that would aid in my quest to find this necessary information, I would be most appreciative. Please e-mail me at harleneq@hotmail.com if you have any vital information or are just trying to contact him as an old friend. I know he's been a friend to me.

Thanks, in advance, for your help....

He was in the 44th engineers and 10th corps. He passed away in March 2001 and going through his personal papers we found his discharge papers that says he has two bronze stars.A friend of his says there should be four stars at least.Since the fire in St.Louis destroyed all evidence of his military history we have no means of finding any information about his time during Korea. The family would apreciate any information concerning our Father and his time there.
With hope and Thanks,
