Comments: I see several people asking about my old 79th website in the archives. Long story. The good news is I am making a new one and it currently has hundreds of pictures of the 79th in Korea. The site is still in progress and eventually will have historical information and recollections. Here is the link:

Comments: I spent the spring, summer, and fall of 1952 in the Iron Triangle of Chorwan, Kumhwa, (US) and Pyonggang (Chinese), completing a large concrete Arch Bridge with 1Lt Patterson, 15 other good men, and a bunch of KSC nationals. We got it done just as the Hantan river rose and carried away the ponton bridge. (See Christman entry 44928 for the story and pix). Then I went to another bridge at Kumhwa. Interesting work with a good view of a lot of the action, especially the air strikes, but little personal danger. A competent group..

I would be happy to hear from any survivors of that group. Regards to all vets. David H

Comments: Notification of Gerszewski/Smiley Kasernes websites

Greetings,

This message is sent to former soldiers interested in Karlsruhe related groups and former units in the Karlsruhe area. I have sent this message to various units at Gerszewski and am now working my way through the Smiley list.

Bruce Christman, was stationed with HHQ 79th Engr. Bn. in the early 1970’s, created a great website relating to the 79th as well as Gerszewski / Smiley Kasernes in general. He has posted many great photos from all eras as well as some special photos of the demolition of the Gerszewski Kaserne last summer. It is now being converted to housing.

Here’s the web address: http://79thengineers.fateback.com/

On the site there is a page called “What Was Where at Gerszewski”, with some aerial photos of the kaserne. Each building and feature is numbered with an invitation for old alumni to help identify the functions of each, as well as the dates of the function so we can track the history of the kaserne.

The old place is nothing but a memory now but it can live on in history if you take the time to contribute your memories, good or bad, of your experiences there. Otherwise it will just fade away.

The more who visit and sign the registry, the better the chances are that you might just recognize some old friends from long ago and renew those friendships.
I hope you take me up on this invitation. Bruce has put a tremendous amount of work into this wonderful website and it would be great if everyone who walked on those old cobblestone streets would stop by.

Regards,

Thomas J. Radke

Comments: Its great to see all this online about the "Golden Sun Battallion". Cause just a few years back, you couldnt find anything online about this unit and some of its history. I joined the army in January of 2004 after hearing all the stories my grandpa said of being in korea during the war, and serving under the 79th Engineers. The day i left for basic training, my grandpa passed away and it just gave me more motivation to complete basic and go on into the Engineer regiment. Now i am currently assigned to A co, 14th en bn and im proud to serve in a unit that fought with my grandpa in korea. I just want to say thank you to all the veterans who served in Korea, cause you are not forgotten in my book.

Comments: The news lately has been filled with stories of the 8th Army pulling back from the DMZ, and HQ from its base in Yongsan. The 79th was the unit that moved into Yongsan (it was originally the HQ for the Imperial Japanese Army in Korea) to rebuild it for 8th Army HQ. The S3, 1st Lt James N. (Jim or Pat) Patterson, was the mastermind, and the driving force, behind some fantastic work that was done. I've taken it upon myself to get some recognition for the Bn., and Jim in particular, for the work done then, and what is presumably still in use more than 50 years later. So I wrote to Secty. Rumsfeld with my feelings, and asked that if there is a closing ceremony when the Army does pull out of Yongsan, and turns it over to the Koreans, that due respect be paid to the 79th, and to Jim especially. If any of you want to add your voice to the request, please feel free to do so. Jim resides in Ft. Worth, TX, so as a neighbor of W it might pull some weight with the White House. I have not had a response from Rummy, so I assume that the letter is working its way down the chain-of-command. Hope it reaches the answering desk before I kick-off.

Comments: My dad has been telling me stories for years about his experience in the army corps of engineers. Almost every time I talk to him on the subject of construction or building he always mentions what he refers to as a bridge book. As described it's a book or reference manual that gives detailed information on how to build bridges and other construction related information. He would love to have or know how to obtain this book or manual if it's either the original edition, reprint or even if it's a newer version of this book or manual. Please contact me at my email address dwal1979@hotmail.com any time if you have or know how to obtain this book or manual.
