Comments: My dad, Birnie Glenn Hammock, was a Sargent (perhaps Supply Sgt.) in the 62nd Engineering Construction Battalion during the Korean War. My mom that two of his friends were Johnny Kean, an Asst. Supply Sgt, and a man by the last name of Bachechi. My dad’s DD-214 reflects an assignment of “HQ & Svs Co 62nd Engr /const Bn APO 301.” His dates of service were 2/1/1951 to 12/19/1952. He passed away on 1-18-2002. I’m the oldest of his three daughters and he did not speak of his time in the military. I’m trying to locate people he served with and will appreciate any information I receive. Thanks in advance!

Comments: All , I am looking for anyone that might be connected to the COL Frank Forney bridge in Chuncheon Korea. The community of Chuncheon has rebuilt the bridge which was originally built by the 62nd Engineers in the 50s. They have rededicated the bridge to the memories of the Korea war and have rebuilt the memorial to Col Forney. They are looking for anyone from the USA or the 62nd that they can use to help show tribute to the sacrifices made by the Americans and Korean Soldiers of that period.

Are there any veterans around that may have known him?

Comments: My Dad, who is now 82, served in Korea from 1950-52. He built bridges and they sometimes took them down as well. He is interested in finding anyone he served with. He has lost most of his pictures and forgot alot of names but does remember Keelan Parker from Northfork Virginia and Dan Turner who they nicknamed hadtacall, because they had to call him something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of the pictures shows him on a bridge with a sign saying Constructed by Co A 62 Engr Constr Bn. Several of the photos show other soldiers and I would like to share copies with anyone who is pictured. Eventually, they will probably go in our local museum.

Comments: Don't remember the names of most of the men I served
with, but do remember Volbraight (hope I spelled the
name correctly) and Leonard Olek. Leonard was the
chief radio operator when I first arrived in Korea.
I was sent to Korea as a heavy weapons infantry
soldier, but I was a carpenter in civilian life, so
was assigned to the engineers as a carpenter.
Shortly after arriving at my unit, I was made a radio
operator. I'd never seen one of their radios until
then, but I soon became proficient on the radio.
Would appreciate receiving emails from any of the
soldiers who served with me. I have two booklets in
my possession. The first is labeled 'Korea 7 January
1951 to 7 July 1952'. The second is labeled 24th
Engineer Construction Group Celebrates 14 Months in
Korea'. These books give brief accounts of the
bridges the Group built in Korea. It tells about the
Kumwha Bridge that Co. B built under constant smoke
screen because it was under direct observation by the
enemy.

I'm glad that I found the site. I have returned
to it many times looking for particular
information about the time frame I spent in Korea, (1950-51).

I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to view and make copies of the situation maps of that period.
Very often we were not aware of what the situation was on any given day or time period.

I appreciate the opportunity to list the date and location of the annual reunion of my unit, 62nd Engineer Construction Battalion. The U. S. Military History Institute is conducting a major survey project to acquire source material on the Korean War.
