Comments: My grandfather was part of Co. A of the 453rd Engineers. He would not speak of his combat experience in the War, but he took a lot of pictures (I have digital copies) and spoke excessively about the people he met and was very proud of his time in the service. He passed away several years ago and now I'm trying to piece together information (respecting that he didn't want us digging while he was alive). I would like this information as I would like to go visit with my family in the next few years. Any information about places or missions or battles would be greatly appreciated as his personal records were lost in the fire at the archives. My grandfather's name is Robert "Bob" Pifer, from Indiana. Also, if there is a place I can contribute the photos, I would love to share them. He was very interested in the civilian side and also took a lot of photos of the soldiers at leisure.

Comments: Hello,
I am the grandson of Charles Britton, a corporal in the 453rd Company B from 1953-1954.
My family has very little knowledge of his time in the Army and not a single story of what he did during his time in Korea. My grandfather died in May 1981, 30 years before I was born, and didn't tell anything to his sons (including my father) or my grandmother.
If anyone remembers my grandfather or has any info/a timeline of what the 453rd did I would greatly appreciate it if you got in touch with me.
Thank you,
Robert Britton

Comments: Greetings,
My father served in Korea with the 453rd Engineer Construction BN from 1949 to 1952. He passed away in 2012. I am doing a family history and contact the VA for military records. Imagine my surprise when I was informed that his records had burned in the St Louis fire. Al they were able to provide was his DD 214. If anyone remembers my father or has access to a unit history, I would be appreciative. I served 17 years myself (Infantry) and I think it is important to include military experience/history in the family story. Feel free to contact me.

Comments: One of the tragedies of war is the lie about what happens when it ends. The Hollywood myth that the soldiers who were in the same outfit continue to know each other and talk to each other is just plain bull shit. Actually, it becomes very lonely after a war. One would think that any experience as intense as serving during a war, an experience that never leaves one alone for the rest of their life, would be filled with innumerable discussions with his “buddies”. This is the way the movies portray it, isn’t it? I am 72 years old and in all that time I have never recognized the name or description of any soldier I served with. Judging by the messages on this site neither has anybody else. After a war it’s like a being one rock in a handful of rocks hurled on a beach from the top of a hundred foot cliff. The military should have some established way for soldiers to easily keep in touch with one another, if they choose to. It should be an automatic part of the optional benefits of having been a soldier – being able to share experiences in a way that is convenient, accurate, and supportive. I believe every soldier must have questions about their service that will remain unanswered unless they can speak with others who were there.
