Comments: I served from Nov 77 to Nov 78 and again in 80/81. Ended up in C Co both times. I was at camp nimble across the river from casey the first time until we moved down to mercer. I worked on the tank wall north of casey most of my time. I was on the bulldozer that sank in the river after the monson came thru in 78. I did some work at the rock quarry. Still remember the big bang when they packed to much dynamite in a hole and sent a rock across the street and crushed a trailer. We used to have the broken heart sewn onto our uniforms until some general in Seoul said it wasn't authorized. Worked on the DMZ at 4 pappa 1. Still remember a buddy who got sent to the Z in search of tunnels. He found out about 30 minutes into the operation he was working in the middle of a mine field. Boy was he pissed since it was supposed to be up there.

I remember Mr. Yu, Civilian Tech, what separated him from all others in the Company he had one hand. It's been so long ago I don't remember a lot of people by name only faces. I do remember Sgt Hayes because he was my RTT Chief. Our shop was a old Green Woodin building, which housed the Comsec Vault, the MARS station, repair shop, wire shop, and of course the office. 1SG Gerald was the first shirt then, LTC Fontana was the Battalion Commander at that time. I left Mercer in 89 and it was turned over to the ROK Army shortly after then. I returned in 1995 and was assigned as a Company 1SG in 122 Signal 2ID. I did visit both India and Mercer during that year but India was closed and Mercer belong to the ROKs. I retired that same year and returned stateside. I am back again working in Seoul as a old gray haired GS employee. I will always remember my time spent with the 44th as well as other units I've served in. Although I can not remember all the names of the soldiers I'd share good and bad times with, I will always remember there faces. loss of Specialist Robert Oliver Unruh, 25, of Tucson Arizona,
44th Engineering Battalion. He was killed in action when his
unity cam under attack by small arms fire in Anbar Province,
west of Baghdad, on September 25, 2004. I decided to write an
article about him because his parents spoke si proudly of him
and his service, and in the process learned a great deal about
the 44th, which I summarized in my article. As many of you
probably know, the 44th deployed with the 2nd Brigade to Iraq
in August, will be there a year, and then not return to Korea but
go to Fort Carson, Colorado. The article should be up in a few
days.

Comments: In 1950, the 44th was part of the army of occupation in Japan and was scheduled to be deactivated and all of its members were going to be transferred back to the US.
Before they were deactivated, the North Koreans attacked the South. The deactivation order was cancelled. The soldiers who had been looking forward to going home were now going to go to combat, and their hearts were broken. The 44th was selected to be part of MacArthur's invasion at Inchon. They needed some way to identify all of their equipment as it came ashore, so they painted red broken hearts on all of their equipment. After the invasion, the troops continued to use the broken heart emblem on everything they built, and it has become a tradition that somewhere on any project they build, there is a broken heart.
The 44th had been a construction battalion, also known as a combat heavy battalion. When I was there from 1985 to 1987, HHC, Alpha Co, and Charlie Co, were at Camp Mercer, Bravo Co was at Camp Nimble, and Delta Co was at Camp Indian. The battalion was assigned to the 2d Engineer Group in Seoul, but since 1992 has been assigned to the 2d Infantry Division and now located at Camp Howze.
