Jan Kenneth Herman GS BUMED
Naval Medical Historian Jan K. Herman announces
the release of his latest book, Frozen in
Memory: U.S. Navy Medicine in the Korean War.
In this remarkable collection of oral
histories, Navy doctors, corpsmen, nurses, and
their patients recall their experiences during
the Korean War.
Military medicine during the Korean War has
been defined in a novel, a movie and long
running TV show but was it really like M*A*S*H?
These fascinating memories of the “forgotten
war,” the dirty little conflict that has fallen
through history’s cracks since being fought 50
years ago, helps answer this question.
Frozen in Memory gathers the first-hand
accounts of those who fought in the extreme
weather conditions on land, sea and in the air
and those who cared for them. Physician Henry
Litvin describes how he practiced medicine
while surviving 30-below zero temperatures and
an enemy trying to annihilate him.
Frozen in Memory illustrates how the Korean War
was characterized by innovation. World War I
Medal of Honor recipient Joel Boone explains
how he came up with the idea of equipping
hospital ships with helicopter landing decks.
This war also marked the first large-scale use
of antibiotics during wartime and the
pioneering practice of vascular surgery, saving
many from limb amputations.
Jan K. Herman is Historian of the Navy Medical
Department, editor of its journal, Navy
Medicine and author of Battle Sick Bay: Navy
Medicine in World War II. He has spent more
than 20 years interviewing veterans of navy
medicine and chronicling their stories in
articles, books and videos. “A by-product and
often unintended consequence of my research,”
Herman points out, “was the emotional reuniting
of patient and caregiver. On several occasions,
a former patient recalled the name of a doctor,
corpsman, or nurse who cared for him. And then,
using the Internet’s search engines, I located
telephone numbers and addresses. These
inquiries enabled me not only to track down yet
another veteran and obtain the other side of
the story, but added a marvelous yet poignant
dividend. Patients and caregivers began talking
with each other for the first time in nearly
half a century!”
Frozen in Memory: U.S. Navy Medicine in the
Korean War is now available in hardcover
through booklocker.com for
$28.95. For additional information, contact Jan
