Comments: Looking for others who served at Camp Stanton during the 1981-1982 time period. Who else recalls the AH-1G shot down in June/July 1981? Apparently the pilot and crew chief were "indulging" in illicit substances and strayed into the buffer zone. I was pretty new in country when this occurred so things are a little fuzzy regarding facts and details. I just know they were both out of country the next day, and heading back to the states.

Right around the same time, the shooting at Camp Casey's M16 range took place involving 2 U.S. soldiers shooting 4 or 5 other American fatally before finally being arrested by MP's.

I'll never forget the fire fight that took place on July 4, 1981. Apparently the NK forces decided to give us an exciting Independence Day! I remember listening to the ensuing exchange that took place before, during, and after loading and arming the Cobras on the Hot Pads so they could patrol just outside the Buffer Zone just in case ground support was needed. You had to love the alerts. Man it seemed like they took place at least weekly!

I was at Camp Stanton when the AH-1G Cobras were replaced in the Fall/Winter of 1981 and 1982 with the AH-1S birds. The transition from the G models is what prompted the move from Camp Stanton to Camp La Guardia. Apparently Camp Stanton being within mortar or artillery range made the brass in DC nervous.

I also won't forget the incident when I was flying front seat in an AH-1G when it returned to H112 on a precautionary. The way the engine kept losing flight RPM, I considered every conceivable way to duck my head between my knees just in case we landed hard. Something about the main rotor blade flexing and taking my head off at the shoulders caused some serious anxiety during the 10 minutes or so from the time the engine malfuction started at about 2000 feet several miles north of Camp Stanton until we made it safely back to H112.

Another interesting experience was during a night flight involving non-standard landings. Having flown these on a number of occasions just to get my flight hours in, I would occasionally fall asleep since other than the 2 pilots, I was usually the only other person in the back of the UH-1. Well this one night I awoke, disoriented and somewhat confused by what was taking place, I quickly realized we were skipping sideways down the runway. The anti-collision lights were acting like a timing light, and would capture the main rotor blade position in reference to the runway. I kid you not when I say there was only several inches between the end of the rotor blade and the runway during a couple of these skips. Assuming the rollover position, I could here the PIC screaming expletives at the younger pilot that he had the controls. Within seconds the aircraft was airborne, flying sideways until enough altitude was gained, at which point the PIC spun the front end around and safely recovered. This was the one time when the white knuckle and pucker factor were both experienced. This incident still gives me the goose bumps.

Anybody remember CW2 Priddy? An ex-Marine Cobra jockey, he took me up in an AH-1G one day. After we were out 15-20 minutes he mentioned to me that since he was the only pilot, knowing how to get a Cobra on the ground safely from the front seat was of paramount importance for my own survival. He spent about an hour working with me until I could descend to a very shaky and erratic hover at about 25-30 feet from the ground. Great guy! While we were out, we approached a ROK Hawk missile sight. After waving to the several ROK troops, he told to remove the gun sight unit from its stowed position, point the 7.62 MM gun at them and pull the trigger. At that particular moment I didn't appreciate his sense of humor. You can't imagine the look on the faces of the ROK soldiers as they hit the deck once the gun started to cycle. It didn't have any ammo going into it, but at the moment the weapon activated, the ROK soldiers didn't know that. He immediately backed down the mountain to avoid them getting our tail number and once we were clear, he just howled from the back seat.

Korea was definitely a dangerous yet exhilerating place to train. On another occasion while flying front seat in an AH-1G, with W1 George Graves, who was killed about 5 years ago in Germany during a training mission, we about ate the front end of an F14 or whatever type of fast mover was used in 1981. We were flying NOE around a mountain, when the fixed wing came out of nowhere from the opposite side of the same mountain. Good thing he pulled up, because at the speed he was moving, we wouldn't have had a chance.

Finally, who else was in country when Kim Il-Sung turned 70? For decades he promised he would drink tea in Seoul for his 70th birthday, and wouldn't you know it - he turned 70 in the Spring of 1982. The entire country was on full alert for several days it seems.

So where are guys like Steward Elder, Bobby Taylor, and so many others?

The only person I really stayed in touch with was my best friend Stacey Sargent. We served in Korea together and then at Fort Bragg. He was in the 5th SF Flight Detachment, while I was with D Co. 82nd CAB. Unfortunately Stacey passed away in 1995 from Hodgkins related cancer.

Comments: I was a turtle in 1986 having graduated from highschool in june by december I was assigned to HHC 1/9 Infantry/ 2ID/ ROK. Being from Oregon farm country I was not prepared for the cold -40degree weather I encountered. Being a young NBC soldier I was planning on going to a chemical company and learning my MOS. I soon learned that the Army didn't have a lot of us to go around. I know I wasn't the only E-1 Private to be placed in a nco slot while in korea but I took advantage of the experience. Iwrite today just to say thanks to all the soldiers I served with at Camp Greaves and Camp Liberty Bell. We were not all Infantry by training but we were in spirit and we were trained to patrol, and fight along side the 11b's. I remember the Manchu March, the EIB training and competition. Even though we were not allowed to earn the badge many of us non-infantry soldiers completed the course in record time. I remember picking up rocks off of the parade field so the Lt.Col could play soccer with the Katusa's. I remember providing extra security for the 1988 Olympic Games and the Bicycle Races that went in to North Korea. I remember the tunnels we found and the alerts when the border was breached. But most of all I remember the brotherhood, and the honor to not only be a Manchu but also to be a Currahee. Not too many soldiers can claim they were members of both units, even if it was peace time. Again to all who served thanks. and "Keep up the Fire" / "Stands Alone"

I was a good field soldier, but I liked to party too much and was always in trouble and restricted to Camp Hovey without a pass. I guess I can say it know that I am retired, but I forged my pass so I had an overnight pass every night.

Comments: I spent 3 months in 1982 in Korea and a few months in 1984 when the Russian Student defected. I was never exposed to Army troops before and was highly impressed with the 2nd ID. Korea was a culture shock, a marine in this country is clearly in Army territory. A territory that was a war zone. I landed at Pusan, Pohang, and I stayed at several camps to include a ROK camp near Uncheon(sic). The front gate had an M-48 tank aimed at the outside road with a beehive round in the chamber. We were given live ammo and grenades on some patrols that were very near the DMZ. I attended Mountain warfare school with ROK troops and had live fire exersizes at Nightmare range and Rodriguez range. Bitter cold in winter and hot as hell in summer. Always locked and loaded. I thought the rock drops were primitive but cool none the less. I also toured JSA area of pammunjom, did the tour and met an Army guy by the name of Burgoen(sic). I remebered his name becasue I knew someone with the same name from another unit. I toured the area to include going into the other side of the building in North Korea. It was great a few feet away from the enemy. BAck in the 80's the Cold War was at it's height. Well anyway, It just so happens that this guy (Burgoen) is hit in the face by small arms fire when the russian student makes a run for it the following day or so.Also near the DMZ a North Korean rubber boat with commandos on it tried to infiltrate the east coast and all were KIA/ It was wild. I got a kick out of the beach patrols. I always felt like I was gonna get shot by south korean troops. The beaches were swept with search lights and raked for foot prints. They would also stack rocks in a pile and paint a line on them so if they were knocked over and restacked it would be noticed. The ROK's also built fake armaments along the beach, wooden mortars or artillery pieces were there I guess for satellite pictures. The ROK Marines were serious individuals and we had a great relationship. I took part in a couple of Team Spirits and Valiant Usher, Freedom Banner and a few others. I was involved in a joint exercise with our Battalion, a battalion of ROK Marines and ROK Special Forces. We boarded a ship to make an amphibious landing on the west coast. The ROK's stole everything that wasn't nailed down. There wasn't a single knife, fork or spoon left in the dining hall. The ROK's were also washing their feet in the toilet. The NCO's were brutal on these guys. I watched a guy get pistol whipped by his Platoon Sergent. After we landed I was on guard duty for the Regiment. I found a South Korean civilian stealing brass off of one of the M-60 tanks in the compound. I brought the guy over to the ROK Marine NCOIC. Boy did I feel sorry for this poor bastard. I Told the Gunny what had happened and he butt stroked the guy in the stomach and he was dragged off into the woods. Who knows what happened to him. Crazy. The girls were great over there. After spending 6 months on Oki Nawa. the times were great. The won went a long way . 10,000 won (about 12 dollars back then) you can drink all night eat and get a woman for the night. It was a great experience. I don't know if anyone remembers the defection incident of '84, but if you do I'd love to hear the details. We were told 2 NK KIA's, 1 ROK KIA and 2 GI's wounded. I salute the troops of the 2nd ID for all the hard work, hardship and danger you endured while fighting and serving in that war zone. SO few really know what the place is like. I read a book called Red Phoenix which is great. More people should be aware of the sacrifice all of you have made for freedom. hoo rah Big Sal

Comments: HHT 4/7th Cav Medic, spent time on radar site 11 and assigned to Delta Troop as Recon Medic. Was supposed to go to D Co., 2nd Med, but some wise guy at division saw I came from the 101st as a recon medic and had just got back from Jungle School in Panama so he "diverted" me to the cav....boy was I glad he did.
Was at Camp Stanton Aid Station in 1979. Looking for Mark Luthner, OH58 pilot. I was his sand bag jockey as his bird was furthest across the airfield and he needed someone to carry a sand bag for the CP seat to balance the aircraft. I remember he was dating the daughter of the Chief of Police at Inchon and reupped to get reassigned at Pusan airbase so he could marry her. He got lots of grief for dating her because she did not have engagement papers, or a VD card that were required by law(despite being the respectable girl she was). I don't know what strings were pulled, but he kept dating her with her father's approval.
Also those that attended Korean Marine Ranger School with me Sept-Oct 1978 on the south side of the mountain that radar site eleven was on. Remember goose walking up hill by the bridge to the island that had Han and Yi dynasty historic site? Slide for life and rappeling on HEMP ROPE!!!! They smelled like pot every time you got off the rope. How about yummy fish heads and rice for dinner after we beat the instructors at soccer?
Also remember mountain patrols to retrieve propaganda leaflets that were dropped by NK's. They were funny: had picture of NK president helping plant rice in rice patties with big kimchi eating grins on their faces. They were english on one side and Korean on the other, but pretty much told us to come to the north and live like kings in life of luxury. We laughed real good about that one and debated who would have the kingdom with the biggest pooh filled rice patty.
Also remember radar site 11. I was there as a medic from late October 78 until December 78. Missed my opportunity to burn the cr*p because we just had flush toilets installed. Learned how to run GSR though...great group of guys there.
I had to go test the water deliveries and the samples would freeze while I waited for results before it was pumped into our water tank. I had to stay there with my 45 and guard the water while the driver I did not know from Adam pumped the water into our tanks. They told me he sometimes would get our water from "unapproved" sources so it had to be tested. I had to crawl up on the truck and unlock the tank to get the sample. If it was low I had to add chlorine and wait 30 minutes in the cold. How we never got poisoned with all the infiltrators that came across was beyond me. Man that was some cold times. I remember the site was dug down into front of mountain facing Han River Estuary. Our helecopter LZ was just behind us higher up and all of it was exposed to NK firezone. We had one APC that we were supposed to "escape" in if we were attacked but there was about 150 yards of open ground to the east and the west that we would have to traverse -we were sitting ducks. We pretty well decided that the quickest way out was to run over the top of the mountain on foot and down the other side. If course it was 20 minutes by chopper and 4 hours by jeep to get out so I don't know where we would have went as we were on a penninsula! Also remember boat target that came down creek from the north and stopped on the back side of the little island in the middle of the river. The Korean Marine Rangers fired it up real good and it went back up stream and disappeared from our scope. When we tried to get an after action report, they told us it was a log...yeah, one that goes up stream! The next morning a ROK Marine Ranger Officer told me to check two dead NK frogmen's bodies to make sure they were dead. These guys were so dead and so full of bullet holes you if you poured water down their throats it would have run out on the ground. He told me if I told anyone he would beat me. (All those guys were highly ranked black belts and loved beating people up)I had seen him beat one of his troops for an hour in sub zero weather for taking a piece of bread from our cook.
Also the night we heard the machinery sound and got a target to the northwest every night. Later they found it was another tunnel being started.
Finally, YongJuGol, sin city with 756 registered prostitutes that SFC ????, the 82nd Airborne 11B sergeant got assigned to monitor as the Case Contact NCO. He hated not being in the 82nd Airborne, he hated Korea, and he hated prostitutes, and was tough as nails chasing girls down the alleys that had been identified as a contact by a positive VD test. As a medic I had to go with him and he was quite funny to watch as he would chase gils through the alleys. He shut down the New Seoul Club one night because the Mamason tried to bribe him. The Niagra Club was infested with VD. He reduced the VD caes from about 60 a month to about 12 so he did his job! I saw him 5 years later at Fort Bragg where he was a CSM of a parachute infantry regement and had 2 kids, a girl named Canopy and a boy named Rip Cord!!!! HARD CORE!!!!
Now that I am older I hope to get back to visit soon as I am being considered for a job teaching in Seoul. If so, I hope to take my family to see some of the places I have told them about. Take care everyone.

Comments: Nice site, I served as a track mechanic from 1983 - early 1985 in C Btry 2/61 ADA on Camp Stanley. We had some great times and not so great times. This period was a huge learning experience for me concerning life and the Army. I look back on some of the hardships and use them as guidelines to this day. Lots of Soju and OB, lots of field duty, roadmarches (tactical and those damn forced marches to Uijongbu and back). Fired commanders and working our way back from a bad IG inspection. Remembering the Nice, World, Big Sams, and numerous other clubs on SONSAN - Ni. The chicken house and store at the back gate, the PoCHONG Macha's in Uijongbu. Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders during christmas (twice). A couple Team Spirits. Russian defectors and our guys whacking a few NK's that were trying to get him. Getting issued full ammo loads after we ran back from the gas chamber because a NK aircraft crossed over the Z. Good Times!
