I would like to know if anyone has any information about a radio performer who had a show on Armed Forces Radio in the fall of 1953. He called himself The Rice Paddy Ranger. He did traditional country music, most of the songs from the Carter Family, Roy Acuff, etc. Does anyone know who he was, where he was from, or any other information about him? Does anyone except me even remember him?
After I left the Army, I went to college, earned a doctorate in English, and taught English in college for 32 years at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK. But those years in the 76th were some of my most memorable.

Comments: I was in Co. A, 2nd Platoon, on December 8, 1966, we went to DX some Rock Crushers and a couple guys had to ride on top of each one so the telephone wires wouldn't get hung up, if my memory is correct. Pvt. Gary Martin and I was going to ride on top of one and we went between a truck and the rock crusher that we were going to ride on looking for a place to get up on it. Pvt. Gary Martin just walked out from between them when the 5 ton dump truck behind us started up the next thing I knew I was being crushed between the truck and rock crusher. I believe the truck was from Co. C,and I believe the drivers foot had to of slipped off the clutch, he may have went into shock himself,if my memory is right because they had to pull him out and someone else had to back the truck off me. Pvt. Gary Martin rode with me in the ambulance to the 121st Evacuation Hospital, because I remember telling them if I died I didn't want to die alone. I was operated on there and shipped out the next day to Tashikawa Air Force Hospital in Japan. The end of Jan.67, I was sent to Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington D.C., until I got a medical discharge. Finished my hospitalization in the V.A. Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. I was in the hospital for nearly a year.
I would really like to hear from the guys who were there and remember that day. To fill in things that I may have forgotten. Also anyone from the 121st Evac. Hospital that may remember me.
I'd love to hear from my old friends in my Unit; GARY MARTIN, SMITH, SHORTRIDGE, SHUMAKER, MORRIS, HIGHLAND, AL DEGRACE, and a couple more names I've forgotten, I hope you know who you are.

Comments: I am Jerry G. Nye US54099444. I joined H and S Company on July 2, 1953 at their home compound in Yongdungpo. The company commander was Capt. William Carey. On July 15, I was sent to our base at Munsan-ni. I was assigned to operate a bulldozer, HQ 98, with Corporal James A. Buckner. When the war ended on July 27, we moved north to a new location just south of the DMZ. On July 29, we began leveling hills for the prisoner compounds which would be part of Operation Big Switch, the prisoner exchange. For nearly two months, we worked twelve hours on and twelve hours off as we prepared the ground for the prisoner compounds and Freedom Village. I was soon assigned to HQ 100, a D8 Caterpillar, the largest and newest in the unit. Ernest J. Cooper and I pushed much dirt with that large machine. I recall the severe heat, the monsoon rains, and the long hours helping build that monumental site. When I read histories of the prisoner exchange, I can recognize in the pictures some of the areas where we worked. Although that will soon be a half century ago, those days still stand out fresh and clear in my mind. I recall many of the men I served with there, good men such as Ernie Cooper, James Buckner, Pete Martin, Robert Summers, Howard Samples, Archie Teague, and so many others.
My life took a different turn after my service in Korea as a bulldozer operator. I enrolled in college, completed three degrees, the last of which was a doctor's degree in English. In 1999, I retired from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma after 32 years as a Professor of English. But still my years in H and S Company remain some of the most memorable of my life. Often, I think of those days and wonder how many of my comrades from the 76th are still living and what they did in their lives. If any of you read this, I would love to hear from you. Jerry
