Comments: My father was S.F.C. Jerry Groom. He was in the 40th infantry Division, 223rd regiment. I believe he also fought at "Heartbreak Ridge," "Sandbay Castle Hill," and the "Punchbowl." in or around October 1958. He passed away in 1993, but I'm interested in hearring any stories about him or his company. He would not talk about the war, I hear he was in a very dangerous group with a high casualty rate, but know little else. If you knew him I would like to hear any memories you might be able to convey to me. This would mean a lot to me as I idolized my father. He was one hell of a man. They don't make them like that any more.
Thank you for your time.

I was hoping someone may have joined at the same time, and perhaps know were they went to basic training. Also if they were in the same basic training company together. Would they remember that company's number and still have a photograph of that Company. Maybe have a roster of that basic training company showing my uncle's name. Last other information some may have concerning my Uncle Tony's time in the military. Thank you for any help you can give to help me honor my Uncles's military service.

Comments: I am seeking information about my father who died in Korea on December 4, 1952 -- Lt Col John Charles Young--40th Infantry Division, 223 Infantry Regiment. He is listed as being killed in North Korea with a military occupation specialty number of 01542. I have tried to locate files, but like many others, have been informed they were destroyed in a fire, I believe, in St. Louis. I was too young to remember him and would love to have even the tiniest detail to make him real to me. I would also like to find out some details to share with my Mother, his wife, who just turned 92--and while she is in good health, will not be with us too many more years.

Comments: Hi,

I am writing regarding my maternal uncle, Robert
Eugene Higgins, who was an MP stationed at Camp
Roberts on the day of his death, April 11, 1953.
The day also happened to be Uncle Bobby's 21st
birthday.

I am probably posting this in the wrong place
having no idea what unit Bobby was in, but I
haven't a doubt anyone stationed at Camp Roberts
in April, 1953, would have knowlege of the
events surrounding Uncle Bobby's tragic death.

Bobby was married to Annabelle Goodall Higgins and
the couple, who I am told celebrated their 1 year
anniversary the same day, were expecting their
first child.

The story that has circulated through the family
for all these years goes like this:

Annabelle went into labor and the couple was
driving in Paso Robles, ostensibly to the hospital, when they were involved in a one car motor vehicle
accident. Uncle Bobby was killed instantly. Annabelle lived 2 hours, long enough to be delivered
of a healthy newborn girl.

The accident and deaths were evidently publicized
widely throughout California starting with a "desperate
search" for my mother, Bobby's only sibling, and my grandmother, who were both living in Long Beach at the
time. They were quickly located. The plight of the poor orphan was followed for some time and people
from all over, even outside of CA, wanted to adopt her.

I was born on April 15, 1954, a year and four days
later. My name, Carma, was the name Bobby and
Annabelle had planned to use if they had a little
girl. Their daughter was instead named Bobby Anna
in memory of her parents.

I grew up with the story of Bobby and Annabelle.
Around the time I turned 30, I heard, for the
first time, that Annabelle had supposedly been
pregnant with twins.

Bobby Anna's birth weight, a little over 5 lbs.,
seems to support this, but by no means is this
solid piece of information (I have the card from
the hospital bassinet) proof of anything.

Three troubling pieces of information that have come to light since that time, have, however, given
me greater suspicion of the possibility Bobby and Annabelle may indeed have another child somewhere.

The first came to light when I was doing extensive
genealogy research in 1997. My second cousin, who
resides in Lincoln, CA, sent me a photocopy of the
primitive, handwritten journal her mother prepared
for her in 1968 chronicling the genealogy of her
paternal and maternal families. My great-aunt had
carefully told the story of Bobby and Annabelle in the
journal (her daughter was already fully aware of the story, of course), insisting that the young couple, to
whom she was very close, and who had actually introduced them, had told her Annabelle had undergone an x-ray and was found to be carrying twins.

While this might not sound very credible, it is,
in MY mind, VERY credible for the simple fact the
woman who wrote it was the most Godly woman I have
ever known. Aunt Bessie's character was absolutely unimpeachable.

That got me a little more curious and I again
studied the newspaper article about the accident
with the photo of poor Annabelle hanging out of
the car, unconsious. I ended up calling the Paso
Robles Police Dept. in the hopes of obtaining
photocopies of any police reports or records
that might still exist. I was routed to an officer
who was unequivocal: "If there was a fatality,
WE HAVE THE RECORDS." This man searched and
searched and came up empty-handed and quite suspicious,
stating the lack of one iota of a mention of the
accident was "troubling". I tried the PR hospital
and they acted like requesting records that old
was insane. Hospitals routine microfiched records
during that era, but my query to the hospital was pretty well sand-bagged from the get-go.

The third piece of information I learned just
recently. My second cousin, Aunt Bessie's son,
worked in Paso Robles for a time during the
1970's. He was new to the community and he and
his wife were invited to the home of a new
acquaintance. During that visit, the man began to
tell the story of a young MP who was killed along
with his wife, etc. It was obviously Bobby and Annabelle's story, but my cousin waited for the man to finish before revealing that he and Bobby were first cousins and that Bobby had followed HIS family from AR to CA where he had lived with them for some time, eventually enlisted, served in Korea, and ended up stationed at Camp Roberts. The couple was flabbergasted and quickly went into a related story which follows:

They said that during those years, the early to mid-fifties, there was an ilicit "adoption ring" operating out of the PR hospital where some of the M.D.'s stationed at CR moonlighted in the ER. (Having worked in the medical field for 30 years, I know moonlighting in emergency rooms was and is still a common practice.) It had long been rumored that a baby boy had also been born and that the delivering M.D. "kept the baby".

It is that story, that was the catalyst for this email.

The tragic event surely sparked any number of rumors, but I figured at the very least, I might accidently run across someone who knew Bobby and/or Annabelle
even if I am unable to find any other informatin
regarding the possibility of a second infant.

If anyone has information regarding Robert
Eugene "Bobby" Higgins, his wife, Annabelle Goodall Higgins, the accident, any issues related to the accident, any knowlege of an illegal "adoption
ring" in PR during those year, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. My email address is: CWalsh415@aol.com.

(If there is a better location to make queries of this nature, please let me know.)

Thank you,
Carma Walsh

Comments: Thank you all for your service to our contry. I am very grateful to all those who have answered the calling for the noble purpose of defending this great country.Mere words cannot fully express my respect and gratitude to all of you who made our way of life possible.

If someone can be so kind. I am looking for the patch that was created for the 625th field artillery. I have the 40th Infantry patch but I need the artillery patch to complete the set. I have looked at many other sites and have had no success. If anyone knows a specific site where one can be obtained I would be eternally in your debt.

I loved my Dad very much and wish to honor him in my own way. I purchased a Garand and my Son purchased an M1 carbine. These were weapons that my Dad carried at various times during his deployment in Korea. Along with my rifle I would love to pass those patches on to my Son in rememberance of my own personal hero so future generations of our family will always know of my Dad's service to our country.

Thank you all again for your service and consideration.

Kindest regards,

William Gil

Comments: Interested in location anyone who remembers Dick and would like to either share some memories with him or his son or grandson. Dick recently gave us his Service Awards, and a scrapbook of all his letters home, and photo's. As a family we are enjoying learning about his experience.

Additionally, he has a service medal which is blue with a wide gold stripe in the center, and two narrower gold stripes on either side of the center one - can anyone tell me what this award was for????? Thanks in advance!!!

Comments: My youngest son was told he could not access the Vandenberg 40th Division Memorial Site as he was not a member of the military, this happened 7 Oct 2000!! I had asked him to see if he could find the brick that I had given a large contribution (for me) to have my name inscribed on it. As it happens the invitation to me to attend came about two weeks before the dedication and two weeks after the RSVP date. On that short a notice I could not afford the premium prices to fly from Pennsylvania to CA so he was on a business trip near the base and offered to check it out. Is this a sample of short shrift as usual from another branch of the military?
