During his service he was awarded the Dist Unit Citation, Korean service medal w/3 bronze battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation (ROK), Army of Occupation medal, and Bronze Star. He was stuck carrying the PRC radio most of his time there. He always spoke fondly of a friend named Tucker. He told me of an incident that may sound familar to some, I hope. His unit had been sent back to a rear area for some time of the line. They were issued all brand new weapons and and were using an old wooden building for their barracks. The barracks caught fire and they lost all of the new gear they had been issued. I have pictures of his from Korea and some of the Propaganda (Christmas handkerchief and a Christmas card from the Chinese 'Volunteers'--- Christmas 1951) I'd enjoy hearing from anyone that may remember him. He was a true american and he loved this country. Thanks for reading.

Comments: My family recently was made aware of hearsay evidence regarding my Grandfather's (William Scott) service record in Korea. It is alleged he was court martialed at Presidio for drunkeness on duty resulting in the loss of life of those under his command or control.
Since the records fire in 73 at the military personnel center, we have no way of validating much. William Scott was an NCO assigned to 24th Inf at the time of Pearl Harbor attack. He was supposed to have been part of the liberating force into the Phillipine Islands. For his WWII service record, we heard he attained officer rank and retained it throughout the occupation period in Japan and into the escalating Korena conflict.
I am an active duty Air Force Officer at the Pentagon and hope you will not hold any of that against me. My family wants to know the truth about William Scott. Comments: My father, PFC Robert Becker, served in Korea from late '51 to mid '52 (or thereabouts. He celebrated his 19th birthday on R and R in Tokyo (11/51). If I remember correctly, he arrived in time for the first major retreat.
His front line experience was limited-- only a few weeks, I think. Most of that time was spent bugging out w/ everyone else. He eventually landed in crypto, where he finished out his tour. Although his first hand experience at the front was brief, he saw plenty. I'm sure of that because he never said anything about it until a few years ago. What he finally told me was strikingly similar to SFC Harris' accounts published on this site. Dad's a retired steelworker now. He just got his medals and ribbons about 18 months ago, just before Christmas of '98. He said he got them for me to have. I've never been more proud. I took his decorations to my girlfriend's home in suburban Detroit, thinking--foolishly, in hindsight--that these wealthy folks would be as awestruck as myself. Needless to say, they weren't particularly impressed. I knew I could never look at any of those people the same way again. I had never been so insulted in my life. I was prepared to enlist in the Army after high school, mainly because I thought I could use the discipline (rightfully so). My father flatly refused to allow me to. He insisted on sending me to college (he probably didn't have to try too hard!) for an opportunity he never had. He always said if another war broke out, he'd send me to Canada before I had to go through what he did. He would have had a hard time winning that argument. Dad is a pretty simple man. He always wanted the best for his kids, always wanted us to have the breaks he never got. He is a veteran of a foreign conflict that few people acknowledge--including himself, until recently. It might be difficult to convince people of my generation (I'm 27) that my father is an American hero. I guess I can understand that. I'm convinced though. As far as I can recall, he was, is, and always will be my hero.
To all who served, I am forever in debt. Your deeds have not gone unrecognized. Your actions not in vain. I believe in America. Greater than that, however, I believe in you.
Sincerest Regards,
Robert Sean Becker
