ANYONE KNOW MY DAD ?

JOHN TADLOCK wrote on September 15, 2016

City and State: TUCSON AZ

Unit: E CO., 2ND BATTALION, 1ST MARINES

Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER

Comments: I am looking for anyone who served with my dad, Jimmy Valdon Tadlock, from Kilgore, Texas. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service in Korea. He came home, married my mom and then transfered into Marine aviation and was stationed at El Toro MCAS. He had attained the rank of Sergeant. He died in a traffic accident in June 1958, leaving a pregnant widow with two small children ( 3 and 4 ). If there are any former Marines who served with my dad, I'd love to hear from them.
Thank you.

Keywords: His first name was ' Jimmy ', not James. In Korea, he was a bazookaman, who carried a .38 pistol given to him by his brother-in-law, instead of a .45.
I don't have any details from his service record.

Comments: I'm looking for survivors of the Chosen Few that served in Korea with my Dad, Roy L. Streetman. Unfortunately he passed from this life at the age of 82, Feb. 4, 2013. Dad talked a lot about Korea after my Mother Died and it means so much to my sister and I. He was awarded the Silver Star for a battle on August 17, 1950 near Taebong-ni, Korea in which he was seriously wounded but still managed to lead a group of Corpsmen to the aid of his unit under intense enemy fire. Do any of you remember my Dad? He recovered and was dropped back into Chosin with the second batch of Marines during the fighting there. Please email me if you have information on this. Thank you, and Sincerely, the Proud Daughter of a wonderful Marine and Father.

Keywords: There is some conflicting information on the date of being wounded, it may have been in sept. of 1950. Again Roy L. Streetman was with the 2nd Bn. , 5th Marines, 1st marine Div., dog company. I am doing a history of his military career and would like any information you can give me. He went into the marines in 1949 at Camp Pendleton and was discharged in 1952.

Comments: My father was a member of this platoon and retained a picture taken on 29 May 1954 of the entire platoon. It was taken in panoramic style as the platoon is rather large. I acquired the picture upon his death in 1999 and have it in a place of honor on my wall. Was curious if anyone else from that picture is still alive, and if so if they would like a copy of the picture. There is a part of the picture that is unusual, and is only known to those who were there, and anyone they might have pointed it out to. I am a Marine of the Vietnam Era, and am getting on in age and there is no-one in the family to pass it on to. It is mounted in a handcrafted (by my father) frame and is approx. 10 1/2 in tall and 32 1/2 in. long.

although the web site says that's where he was killed.

Family records from that time were destroyed in a fire in 1955. The
picture on the Korean War Project Website is not one that my father knew
about.

My grandmother always told me he was killed by the concussion of
mortar fire, but the website says he was struck by shrapnel.

He was still 18 at the time of his death. We were told that his original unit
was sent to Korea, and he tried to join them but was underage and was
sent to the Philippines.

OBITUARY

JESSE BLASONGAME wrote on February 23, 2011

City and State:

Unit:

Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER

Comments: Something you I feel you should be informed of:

On September 15, 1951 Lieutenant Colonel Franklin
B. Niharts 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines was attacked on
Hill 749 by die-hard NKPA troops who were charged to
stand or die. The 2nd Battalion took a torrent of fire
from 76-mm., 105-mm., and 122-mm. artillery as well as
82-mm., and 120-mm. mortars which, according to
division reports, reached an intensity that was
estimated to surpass that of any barrage yet
encountered by the First Marine Division in Korea.
Then began a frenzied North Korean ground attack. In
wave after human wave, with bugles and whistles
screaming signals, the North Koreans threw themselves
against the marine line. The marines bent but did not
break.
PFC Richard Blasongame upheld the highest
traditions of the United States Naval Service during
that night as the acting platoon sergeant of the heavy
machinegun platoon serving with COL Niharts Weapons
Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines. PFC Blasongames
extraordinary heroism was one reason why the line did
not break.
He was acting platoon sergeant in charge of the
machinegun emplacements at the point of the battalion
perimeter most exposed to attack. Again and again, the
North Koreans assaulted his emplacements through the
night. When gunners were wounded, he manned the guns.
He hurled grenades. He evacuated wounded. He rallied
his men. When ammunition and grenades became critically
short, he left his foxhole and exposed himself to a
hail of hostile fire in order to inform his commander
and supervise resupply.
When a grenade exploded under his last remaining
machinegun, inflicting wounds to his face and hands,
and jamming the traversing mechanism, PFC Blasongame
continued to fire through the night by moving the
tripod from side to side.
As morning dawned, only four survivors remained out
of his sixteen-man section. Two hundred and eighty-
seven enemy dead lay in front of his position. An
unknown number of enemy dead and wounded had been
carted away by their cohorts.
Acting platoon sergeant PFC Richard Blasongame was
recommended for the Medal of Honor. (From the book
We Claim the Title 2nd edition, 2000 by Burton F.
Anderson)
Because the paperwork was lost it was nine years
before his heroism was officially recognized, then he
was awarded the Navy Cross. He also was awarded two
Purple Hearts (one of which was for a separate action).
Richard Blasongame died at his home in Joshua Tree
on Monday February 21, 2011. He will be buried at the
National Cemetery in Riverside California on Monday
March 7th. He leaves his wife, four children and eight
grandchildren.
