He was a proud Marine, and Purple Heart recipient. He looked forward to the reunions and enjoyed them very much. He suffered from Alzheimers the past 6 years before passing away peacefully in Johns Creek, Georgia near Atlanta. He is greatly missed by his wife of over 60 years, Phyllis and his daughters Lise and Lori.
Phyllis and Franz were sweethearts before he enlisted. Just prior to his deployment he abruptly broke up with her. I believe he felt that it would be easier on her if he had to make the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Fortunately, he did return and immediately drove several hours to find her. Franz was a faithful Catholic and instilled that faith in his girls and his many grandchildren. He was very successful in various management and executive positions at General Tire and retired in the early 1990s.

Comments: Hello,
My grandfather was SSGT William R Smith.
He passed away March 3, 2017 at the age of 87,
He was in the Korean war from September of 1950-1953.
He was:
3rd battalion
11th regime
1st Marine Div.
(sorry if I misspelled anything)
If anyone has any information on him at all, please contact me.
He never wanted to tell any stories of the war.
The most that I have ever been told is that a bomb went off right near him and the shrapnel actually hit him in the head causing him to bleed from the ears and become unconscious.
He ended up waking in the hospital and just got up and left and found his group and continued fighting. He had shrapnel in his head and was deaf in one ear completely.
Any information would be much appreciated whether you knew him or had stories about his group he was in.
thank you,
Sarah Hays

I'm interested in learning more about his time in Korea and perhaps finding any men from his unit. His memory isn't great but he speaks of Bunker Hill and the Punchbowl.
He was injured, buried in a foxhole/bunker, and I believe all, if not most of his unit was killed and he survived. While buried alive, he had rats chewing on his leg! He contracted hemmorhagic fever and can never donate blood.
He also talks about the time Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russel? came with the USO and took pictures with the soldiers.
Please reach out if you served with him. Would love any pictures of this unit or info. THANKS!!

Comments: As a personal favor to his family, I am desirous of compiling a Marine Corps service record and biography of former S/Sgt Guy V. Knighton, deceased, who was a China Marine in 1945/1946 and later served with George Company, Third Battalion, First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division in the Korean War. I believe he was wounded in action in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Former S/Sgt Knighton passed away on November 7, 2014 at his home in Birmingham, AL at age 86. He served 7 years in the Corps and was an active and proud member of the China Marine Assn., G/3/1 Assn., The Chosin Few, the Marine Corps League and the VFW.
I'm sure that the greater part of his Marine buddies have now passed also, but I would like to hear from any surviving former Marine Veteran friends who served with him who can provide stories and information about his China service and his combat experiences in Korea that will be useful to include in his biography. His correspondence file mentioned Cowboy from Harrison, Idaho, Jim Olson from North Liberty, IN, Hickle, Haleman, and Herricks, whom I assume served with him in G/3/1. I believe that he had been in the Corps about four years prior to the outbreak of the Korean War.
I believe he was with George Co. 3/1 as part of Task Force Drysdale mission on November 29, 1950 to open the MSR Between Koto-ri and Hagaru-ri to reinforce the 5th and 7th Marines. I believe George 3/1 went in reserve with the 7th Marines after arriving at Hagaru-ri. I feel sure he served with G/3/1 during the the subsequent battles at East Hill at Chosin and the subsequent First Marine Div. (-) retrograde attack from Yudam-ni through Hagaru-ri to Koto-ri, and that he later served with G/3/1 at Hill 902 on April 23-24,1951.

Comments: My Uncle Ronald was KIA July 25th during a furious assault by
Chinese Reds on three hill positions defended by the Marines near
site of the truce talks at Panmunjom. PFC. Snyder had been wounded
by shell fragments and was treated aboard the navy hospital ship
USS Repose and returned to the front lines Feb. 11th. He enlisted
in June of 1951 and trained at Parris Island, S.C., Camp Lejeune,
N.C. and Camp Pendleton, Calif., before shipping out for the war
zone.

him after he left Korea, I have heard he went on to serve in Viet Nam and
then died in a parachute accident at camp Lejune. Any information is
deeply cherished. Thank You
