Subject: Disposition of Remains - Koto-ri

Ted,
A friend who served in Korea has asked if I could some how find out
if the bodies of many Marines buried in one particular mass grave
were ever recovered.

A few years ago he saw a photograph of a grave site in Korea. The
article associated with the photograph was requesting information
about the location of the site. He thought he recognized the site
in the photo but later misplaced the article.

Recently, someone from his unit sent him a field roster listing all
transfers, field promotions, WIA, MIA and KIA. From this roster he
has provided me with the information pertaining to one Marine who he
knows was buried at that site.

If this marines remains are accounted for then perhaps the photograph
he saw was not the same burial site at which he was present or
somebody else recognized the photograph and provided the location.

In any event, I'm sure he would be interested in knowing. The name he
provided me with is as follows;

2nd Lt. Howard Foor
1st Marines, 2nd Bat,"D" Company or "D21" KIA 12/8/50.
Apparently this was in an area known as "Koto-Ri". Any information
would be greatly appreciated.

Re Lt Howard Foor

Information from Philip " Ted" Marsden from Stone Mtn, Ga.

Ted was in Dog Co/2/5 at Koto-ri and witnessed the internment of
over 140 remains of Marines. They were rushed to evacuate and
completely out of truck transport.

Graves Registration supervised the excavation, via Bulldozer of a mass
grave site measuring 40/30/4 in the middle of the compound.

Re; lt. Howard Foor, D/2/1

I was with E/2/11 FO team attached to D/2/1. Lt. Foor was one helliva an
officer. For a small man he was quite a leader! I remember distinctly a
terrific fight we had at Yongdonpo soon after we landed and he was
moving up and down the the front of our lines encouraging all of us.

He was killed up at koto-ri on Operaration Drysdale. This was a mixed
group of Marines, British Royal Marines and Army, led by Col.Drysdale
of the Royal Marines to reach Haguru. I was not involved in the
operation, but we could observe the attack from our position.

Respectively Submitted.

My uncle, Bernard Lee Brandfass, IDNO 663328, PFC USMC was killed in
action on 9/21/50. Am seeking info about him & details regarding his
final action. Our listing & the Form 180 will be invaluable to me.

----more on 11/5/96----
His obituary states that he died at Yongdugpo. I also found a Korean
Presidental Unit Citation for the First Marine Division in his
effects.

Also,in a letter he wrote home on 9/1/50 he made reference to serving
in the mighty "Fox" company & stated that the rebel flag, (presumedly
the stars & bars) was their symbol.

The return address on his letter is "F" co., 1st Plt., 2nd Bn., 1st
Marines If I am correct, are their unit histories available so I can
learn more about the action at Yongdugpo?

He also stated in one of his letters that he travelled to "Yokohama",
Japan (arriving on 8/28/50) fron San Fran on the U.S.S. President
Jackson (APH-18).

Let me know if this helps at all.

area of Korea on 14 September 1951.

He saw action from 7 July 1951 until 19 September 1951 and spent the
rest of his tour of duty in and out of hospitals recovering from his
wounds. He later died at the Veterans Admin. Hospital in Long Beach,
CA. in the mid-1980's.

I would be very interested in finding someone who served in his unit
and learning more about the specific action that his unit was
involved in, ie battles, etc. The ideal would be to find someone who
knew him that I could talk with or even better meet in person.

This veterans name was Leonard Greenberg.

Any assistance you can offer would be very much appreciated.

Was wounded twice. The second time on the line in front of
Bunker Hill. Those were terrible times for any Marine who was in
a line company then.

The 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines took 1149 casualties in 79 days
during Augaust, September and October. I'm sure it was about the
same for the other line companies. The replacement drafts couldn't
keep up with the losses and they had to pull the division out of the
line. I would like to hear from anyone from any outfit that served
on those outposts that summer. It is a hell of a story and it needs
to have someone write about it. I'm thinking of having a
"Bunker Hill" table at the 1st Mar Div reunion in San Antonio this
August.

I am trying to find two Marines in particular:

PFC Jon D. Adams 1221228--Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion,
1st Marines, 1st Mar Div. Jon was hit and evacuated from the area
of Bunker Hill on September 5, 1952. His recommendation for a
Medal of Honor was reduced to a Navy Cross. I'm sure he was
from Texas.

Sgt. Charles F. Reed, 1161902--Easy Company, 2nd Bat, 1st Marines.
I think the last time I saw Charlie he had just brought a squad back
from one of the out posts near Bunker hill. He looked old and tired
as they entered the trenchline near where I was sitting. We had
been together in the same units for over a year. I would like to see
him again.

Charlie was from Gary, Indiana and was always secure that he
would have his job at the Studebaker plant when he got home.

He was KIA 11/28/50 at Koto-ri. Bob, hailed from Alameda, Ca and I
believe he was a reservist probably from San Francisco. Reportedly
arrived in Korea around August 1950.

I have been reading the book "Chosin" and it is pretty detailed

reference about his weapons Co. but his company officers were all
listed. With the exception of 2nd Lts. who were younger the others

we went to Korea on board the USS Washburn and the USS Menafee arriving
at Sok Cho, Korea on Oct 4th. We joined our outfits on Oct 5th and went

Korea is a very familiar place to me. I served in the post World War II
Army of Occupation of South Korea from 1946 to 1948. At that time, I
served in the following units. 1st: 754 Tank BN, located at Su-Saik,
south of Seoul. 2nd: 58th Mechanized Cav Recon Group, Su Saik and
Munsan, located on the edge of the Munsan River, near Pammunjon. 3rd:
Kaesong (now part of North Korea) and 4th: Onjin, which was a peninsula
of South Korea (now in North Korea's hands.)

There were three ways to get to Onjin. Sea, Air or Land. We always had
to travel via land in convoys, and had to pass through the capitol of
North Korea (Pyongyang), escorted by Russian soldiers. Kaesong was a
beautiful, quaint old oriental city. Somewhat similar to Kyoto, Japan.

I was very sad to see it fall into the hands of North Korea.

I returned to Korea September 15th,1950 and made the invasion of Inchon.

At that time, I was a United States Marine Reservist, serving on active
duty with Weapons Company, "Heavy Water Cooled Machine Gun Platoon," 2nd
BN, 1st Mar Regt, 1st Mar Div FMF.

I was never sent to Marine Corps "Boot Camp," but rather, was sent
directly into combat as a reserve called to active duty. Before the
Wonson Operation, I was pulled out of Machine Guns and placed in the S-2
Section (H&S Co.) as a Korean Interpreter because of the knowledge of
the language I had acquired while with the Occupation Forces.

We went on into Seoul and beyond, then pulled back and boarded the USNS
Noble and headed for Wonson. After two weeks of "Operation Yo Yo"
floating up and down the coast waiting for the mines to be cleared, we
then went on up to Koto-ri in the Chosin Reservoir Operation.

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who either served with
any of the Army units above between 1946-1948, and I would like to hear
from anyone from D-2-1, WPNS-2-1, OR H&S (S-2 Section) 2-1, First Marine
Division. We all have some interesting stories to share.

Each year, I arrange for special church services for the survivors of
the Chosin Reservoir. For 1998 the services were held at the Crystal
Cathedral, Garden Grove, CA and was televised not only nationwide, but
worldwide.

25, 1997.

Clarence Merle (Mac) McClintock - He left Akron with the Co D, 7th
Regiment, Marine Reserves. My mom gave me a scrap book from articles
from the Akron Beacon Journal that she kept while he was in Korea. I
have been reading the articles, and would like to know where my dad was
over there. She cut out anything having to do with the 1st Marines.

He never spoke about Korea. He arrived in Nov 12, 1950. One time I asked
and he told me he was in an area once, that was surrounded for quite
sometime (I do not remember how long) they were living in fox holes, he
said he had layers of clothes on. Civilians were with them. They were
freezing. And that they had to fight there way out.

June 9,1951 he was wounded, article says he was with the Co. F, 3rd
Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Reg, 1st Marine Div . He was wounded
twice. The second time article says, he was wounded Sept 14, 1951 with
shrapnel in his neck and right thigh. He wrote that his company (same as
above) and two others near Inje were temporarily cut off from supply and
were without food or water and almost without ammunition. He and the
other wounded finally were evacuated by plane and taken to a hospital
ship.

He got to come back to US March 23, 1952. I can't find Inje on these
little maps from the paper.

When I was young I wore a greenish jacket of his, that had a fox or a
wolf on it. He saw me wearing it and he told me not to ever let
anything happen to it. Someone in his Co. had put this on with a marker.
I am trying to find out where he was during his time over there. So I
know he was in Inje in Sept 14 1951, where was he before and after that?

Thanks
