Comments: A poem I thought you all might like.

Freedom Is Not Free
My father is the greatest man I have ever known, he fought in the cold, the dark, and territory unknown.

He fought for the freedom of people he had never met. The blood and the horror was a sight he would never forget.

The mighty Marines, fought hard and bold, but many friends fell, in the deep bitter cold.

Brothers in combat, brothers in arms, brothers in death held in each other’s arms.

Holding a friend whose life is gone instead of yours. Brother you will be remembered as a hero of this war.

With the battles raging, they could have fled, but Marines can be proud they took with them their dead.

If you ask the question why that is so, every marine will answer proudly, that is the Marine code.

They may not have known what they were fighting for, but brothers are brothers and that’s what Marines were there for.

Friendships made by bonds of blood. The heroes will not be forgotten. Their stories will be told.

Held dear to our hearts with the deepest of love. They died for freedom and the price was blood.

Thank you father for being willing to die, and thank you father for coming home to bless our lives.

But leaving the brothers who died for the unknown, when remembering them, you will not be alone.

There is an old battlefield, far across the seas, that is now covered with large buildings and beautiful trees.

A grandfather reflects, the time has gone fast, as his grandchildren are playing, unaware of the past.

“Thank you for our freedom, Thank you”, he cries. “My children were worth it.” As tears welled in his eyes.

The grandfather humbly dropped down to his knee, he will never forget the Marines nor that “Freedom is not Free”.

Daddy your heroic fight for freedom will never be forgotten. Thank you for being willing to give your life for your friends. I thank your friends for giving their life for you. Your life is a tribute to them. You can hold your head high. They call you the Chosin Few, because you really are chosen. You have chosen to live your life to the fullest. You have done that with honor, a tribute to your brothers and to us. And now we honor you father, you are an example to us all. Thank you. By Sandy Homer

-My family held a party paying tribute to my father. We gave him a framed window box with his purple hearts in it a picture of him during the war. It was beautiful. At that time I read him this poem I wrote for him. My father was a Gunny sargent 1 Marines 2nd Battalion Fox company, he was at Choisin. He is a great man. I am proud of him and all that fought. I hope you all enjoyed the poem.-

Comments: My uncle, Bernard Lee Brandfass, IDNO 663328, PFC USMC was killed in action on 9/21/50. Am seeking info about him and details regarding his final action.

His obituary states that he died at Yongdungp'o. I also found a Korean
Presidental Unit Citation for the First Marine Division in his
effects.

Also,in a letter he wrote home on 9/1/50 he made reference to serving
in the mighty "Fox" company and stated that the rebel flag, (presumedly
the stars and bars) was their symbol.

The return address on his letter is "F" co., 1st Plt., 2nd Bn., 1st
Marines. Are there unit histories available so I can
learn more about the action at Yongdugpo?

He also stated in one of his letters that he travelled to "Yokohama",
Japan (arriving on 8/28/50) from San Fran on the U.S.S. President
Jackson (APH-18).

Please let me know if you have any information. Thank you in advance.

Then they were moved near Panmunjon because the Chinese said they would retake Soul by May Day. My father's platoon walked into a perfect ambush and they suffered 30% casualties. He was injured and sent to a hospital. One of his buddies wrote to him in the hospital and told him that most of their platoon was wiped out taking Pork Chop hill. He would like to find out if there are any survivors from his platoon. If you have any information he would appreciate it and I will pass it on to him. He hasn't gotten into the internet, yet. I have also copied all of the letters on this site and giving them to him to review. If he has any information on any of these I will be glad to email that person.

Comments: LT Burrus was listed MIA, Killed in Action, while leading a patrol in Dec, 1952. The LT, along with 8 other Marines, were killed in the action, their bodies never recovered. Our family is trying to locate some Marines who may have know LT Burrus to help determine where he and the other men died, so we can forward the information to the DOD remains team. Any information you may have will help a lot int his effort. Thank you in advance.

Comments: I fail to see the USS BENFOLD listed, dedicated
at San Diego in memory of my cousin, Edward Clyde
Benfold, a US Navy Medical Corpsman attached to
a Marine unit in Korea. He saved two Marines, but
lost his -- awarded the Medal of Honor (Navy)
the usual way -- after death.
The ship exists - we were present last year
when it was put into service.

Comments: Looking for any information on my great uncle, Cpl. Philip Anthony Reynolds USMC, killed in Action November 29th 1950, at Koto Ri. I believe he was a machine gunner with Second Battalion, First Marines. He won the Navy Cross posthumously. He was from Freehold NJ, and after the War a fellow Marine, Jack Liester of OH, wrote Philip's father a letter offering condolences and relating Philip's last days.
