307th Bomb Group

Units Kadena AFB, Okinawa

370th Bombardment Squadron
371st Bombardment Squadron
372nd Bombardment Squadron

On August 1, 1950, the 307th BG with its B-29s deployed from MacDill AFB, Florida to Kadena AB, Okinawa. One week later the Superfortresses went into action over Korea. From August through September, they attacked strategic objectives in North Korea, such as the enemy's transportation system and industrial facilities. Following a campaign in November 1950 against bridges over the Yalu River into Manchuria, the B-29s struck interdiction targets, including communications and supply centers, and supported UN ground forces by hitting gun emplacements and troop concentrations. Not officially inactivated until June 1952, the 307th Group became an unmanned organization on February 10, 1951, replaced by the 307th BW.

Stations

Kadena AB, Okinawa, August 8, 1950-June 16, 1952.

Comments: I've helped an older friend, James Grady White, who was a radio operator on a B-29 out of Kadena, from Jan to first of July 1953. He had never gotten his DD214, medals, etc. He just had a card stating he had served in the Air Force. Jim flew 23 bombing missions but when he got his 214, it just listed Korean Svc Medal/w 1 bz, UN Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. We've made an appeal for an Air Medal for the missions he flew. However, if anyone has additional information on this unit, it would be most welcomed. Unfortunately the news paper clippings he had got misplaced. Also, an article I found said the 307th was given the Presidential Unit Citation but didn't list a date. Does anyone know about the PUC? Also, his 214 is difficult to read since it was burned around 2 sides making some info eligible to read. He mustered out at Hunter AFB, Valdosta, GA. Also, some of the info is typed together or close to another and it makes it hard to read or make out. Jim was an Airman 1st Class, radio operator. I believe he flew out of McDill AFB, to Okinawa.

Comments: Greetings,

My dad was Robert Kent Crain. He was with the 307th Bomb Wing, 370th Bomb Sqd at Kadena late in the war. He started out repairing ground communication equipment, but got additional training and flew 14 missions as an ECM operator and/or radio operator. he may have been known as having come from the suburbs of Chicago, or possibly northern Wisconsin.

Dad passed away in January 2007, but I was wondering if anyone remembers having served with him on Kadena during the war. he might also have had a reputation as what today would be called a "party animal." LOL!

Anyhow - if anyone remembers dad I'd love to here from you.

Thanks!

Comments: Until this book, very little had been published about B-29 combat operations during the Korean War, and most of what was written was either incomplete or riddled with misconceptions. Having flown 28 combat missions as a B-29 copilot and witnessed the aftermath of the Namsi debacle I was anxious to set the record straight.
In doing so, I spent seven years researching and writing about a battle that lasted fifteen minutes--yet forever changed the way air warfare would be waged.
Black Tuesday Over Namsi, a True History of the Epic Air Battle of the Korean War can be ordered from the publisher, Heritage Books by calling 800-876-6103 or online at heritagebooks.com.
Reviews of Black Tuesday Over Namsi can be accessed through my web site, B-29s in the Korean War. Readers have so far responded that they were surprised and delighted. I hope you will be too and look forward to hearing from you.
