Comments: My father, M. Bill Hall, was with the 47th Bombardment group during WWII; and upon his death, I recovered documents from his military service. He received two Distinguished Flying Awards (not sure what you call them exactly), but I was thrilled to see he also received the Distinguished Flying Cross while serving with this group. He flew over 65 missions during this campaign and constantly told stories of his time during the war.
This group had reunions every year until about 10 or 15 years ago, when they discovered they were losing too many of their members and were beginning to be too old to travel. He had two bombardiers assigned to him at one time during this time in the war because the first one went home from the stress of the war, and the second one asked to fly with my father. (Because he had a good record of bringing them home alive.)
He left the military after 20 years of service and while stationed at Hamilton AFB in Novato, California. He had a great career and loved flying. He was at the first testing of the atomic bomb, flew the Berlin Airlift, war trials, flew in the Korean War, and after retiring worked with the Air Force while employed at Lockheed. He LOVED his A20 plane -- his favorite -- and told his nonstop stories about the war. He has some documents with names of people, etc., but I would be glad to search for any names anyone might need.
There was an article about this (his) 47th group in Life Magazine. Hope this helps.
