Subject: QUESTION ABOUT NAVY FAMILY HOUSING SAN FRANCISCO AREA 1950

Comments: My father Ward Elden Pack served in WWII, and then was reactivated for the Korean War in 1950. We moved to the San Francisco area (I was 7 years old) for several months, and then moved again to Navy housing in Long Beach, CA.
He then served on the USS Toledo. My question is about where we might have lived in the San Francisco area in Navy family housing. I was too young to know where I was, really, although I have several memories of first living in barracks-style family housing, and then moving to a Quonset hut. I walked to school from the Quonset hut. If you know of where either the apartment type barracks might have been (it seems to have been at a low altitude), or the Quonset hut community (which seemed to be higher on a hill), I would appreciate knowing about it. Thank you!

Comments: Hello all, I am looking for shipmates/friends of my grandfather Alvin Lee Dinkel. I do not know his rank, his company, basically I don't have much information. I do slightly remember that he possibly worked with communications-radio etc aboard the USS TOLEDO during the Korean War and that he was in the Navy, as well that he received at least two medals (of which I do not know which medals he received.) His picture was published in a newspaper about him receiving the medals along with another service member (the newspaper has been lost). I know I don't have a lot of information for anyone to go on, which I apologize. I never got to meet him as he died stateside, post-war. (but not from the war)

Comments: Message received from someone building a model of the Toledo, and needs information - as follows:
I searched several websites in an attempt to find a sailor with Radio Man rate, who served aboard the Toledo in the mid 1950's.
I'm building a scale model of the USS Toledo CA-133 for a friend whose father served aboard as a radioman who communicated in Morse code..
She was very close to her father, who has passed on, and very proud of his service. I would like to mark the location of the radio room on the model for her. I believe that it was located in the superstructure, between the 5-inch turrets and below the signal bridge. Is this correct?
Thank-you very much for any information you're willing to provide about the USS Toledo.
Sincerely, Gary Pforr, Alamo, California

Comments: Hello, I am a junior at the University of Toledo in Ohio. My grandfather served on the USS Toledo for at least most of his naval career of 8 years and I know he was discharged in 1956. We can't get any stories out of him and when we ask (my whole family says that if anyone can get the stories from him, it's me) he tears up real bad and starts breathing funny. All I know is that he was in Inchon and that he was in two different helicopters that got shot down and he was always near some of the big guns that have caused him to have permanent hearing loss. I have a 10 page paper to write for my history class due at the end of the semester and I was hoping you might be able to tell me some of the stories. I really want to know more about what my grandpa did. I know he was awarded several medals but he never collected them and won't even tell us what ones they are. His name is Robert Leach. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Comments: we are sorry to say but Edward Schroeder Jr has passed away on July 5,2004. His family is very proud for his service to our country and are forever greatful to the many who served with him and during the Korean War. We would love any information we could recieve from fellow crew members. He served from 1951-1953. He was a avid saltwater fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, six daughters,3 son-in-laws, a son and daughter-in-law,and 9 grandchildren. We will miss him dearly. He will live on in our hearts and will remember him with pride.
We salute you Poppy.
