Comments: I know my dad was in the Korean conflict. I believe he joined in 1950 at the age of 17. I know he served on the USS Manchester. He served in Guam, Korea, Japan and other areas.
In the 1960's he rejoined the Navy at the Olathe Naval Air Station in Olathe, Ks. I believe he served maybe 5 or 6 years. Total service around 12 years.
Variety of questions about his service. He has been deceased for about 15 years. He died at age 74.

Comments: The USS Manchester was making a speed run to Korea via Pearl Harbor. She was doing 32 knots when all hell broke loose. I was below decks returning from the after store room with the coffee grounds to CIC. Combat Information Center. The after fire room exploded with a flash fire just as I was in the area. I and others entered the burning inferno to retrieve the dead and disabled as best we could. We carried the bodies to the main deck for medical care. It was at the location of the after turret and I remember the ships Marines assisting the medics. At this time I was picked to help removing live ammunition and throwing it over the side. I was at the right place at the right time. The ships cruise book only mentioned the disaster with a one line note as we entered Pearl Harbor. Many of my shipmates were victims with disabilities and as least two were killed. Do any of my old shipmates remember what happened 68 yrs ago. I love you all.

UNDER the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you 'grave for me:
Here he lies where he long'd to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Paul Bergen wrote on February 1, 2011

Comments: My father David J. Bergen was a Corpsman transferred to the Manchester late in 1950. He now suffers from Alzheimers and is no longer a reliable source. He had many fantastic stories about his experiences during the war which I try to remember from when I was a boy. Is there still anyone out there who can confirm /correct any of these stories? The ship was the newest and last operational Light Cruiser sporting 6 inch guns and so it was kept on station in order to expend as much of the unused ammunition from WWII as possible. Dad arrived the day before cutoff on battle stars so several battles were credited to him although he didnt participate in them all. So he had a gold star representing 10 battles out of a total of 11 for the whole war. He once reported that he and another corpsman were needed ashore in the evacuation of Hungnam (?) They were ferried in by helicopter in order to assist the injured. They unfortunately, they came under friendly fire in a defile that killed the other corpsman and many Koreans The ship was often in the thick of things and was struck by shore fire at one point. Another time the Communists arranged to ambush the ship hiding a line of tanks behind an embankment to drive up on it when she came in range. On that day the ship trained her guns on them and exchanged fire with them. The tanks didnt fare well. One evening Dad was off duty on deck admiring the sunset. The ship was on station off a causeway cutting a crucial supply route. It happened that Dad saw a Communist truck convoy trying to make a break for it in the dusk. He called fire control alerting them and they directed him to nearby binoculars which could provide coordinates for them to train the guns onto. I short order the big guns were firing on the target he marked for them. Afterwards there was nothing left of the convoy. Apparently the ship made such a problem for the Chinese that they hatched a desperate plan to capture her. They massed hundreds (?) of san pans packed with soldiers thinking to sneak up on her with and with grappling hooks scale up on board. But the watch saw them and sent out the alarm. In the morning a launch was sent out to look through the remaining wreckage. One Chinese soldier was found alive. He was brought into the medical ward(?) and the staff managed to resuscitate him even though his heart stopped three times. It was a remarkable accomplishment, and the prisoner was able to recover. So they made arrangements to turn him over when they made port. Dad escorted the POW ashore where they were met by a ROK officer and Sergeant. The officer signed for him pulled out his pistol shot him in the head. Before the dead man crumpled to the ground the murderer kicked his body over the edge of the pier into the bay. No doubt he reported the prisoner as killed during an escape attempt. According to Dad, Marilyn Monroe although not yet a famous actress came aboard doing a USO morale tour.

He died in 1983, but I remember him telling me that at first he was put in the boiler room spinning dials for Bee Bee Rebozo. I don't know if that was nickname, but it stands out to me as an unusuual one. He also told me that he helped pull injured soldiers off other ship(s?) and put colored blankets on them to identify how badly injured they were. He never told me where or what battles he was in. But he did tell me they once sailed through the Baring Strait and also went to Sue St. Marie on the Great Lakes. He was awfully cute in his Navy picture. Does anyone remember him? He must have served 1950-1952.
