Comments: I am trying to help my dad recall what happened during his active duty with the
1st Battalion 5th Marines while fighting in the Korean War. He has Alzheimer's
now and has recently started to really talk about his military service time. We
want to be able to document as much as possible, but his memory tends to bounce
around. We are hoping someone here served with him. He departed San Diego after
having his training at Camp Pendleton. He left San Diego port on Jan 27, 1951, on
the USS J.C. Breckinridge (AP-176). He arrived and disembarked Feb 16, 1951, at
Pohang Korea. I know his Primary duty was listed as Ammo Carrier 81mm, from the
time he arrived until he was hospitalized in September. He remembers nothing
about being in the hospital Sep 17-30,1951. However, when he was released they
changed his Primary duty to BasWpnsRepMan and then to Messman. He said he thinks
it was because he couldn't lift heavy equipment anymore. Nothing in his paperwork
talks about any injury or accident or what hospital, it only says "sk hosp" . He
does recall a mine going off in front of him and being blown off the trail and
down the mountain. Afterward, he said two men helped him back up the hill and
carried his piece of equipment, until 2 days later a corpsman could pull the
shrapnel out of him. He also talks of a bad battle that took place on his
birthday April 23, 1951, and lasted several days. He departed Korea on Feb 1,
1952, aboard the USS Marine Adder then transferred to the USNS Aiken Victory (T-
AR-188) in Kobe, Japan, and departed for San Diego, CA on Feb 4, 1952. He finally
arrived in San Diego, CA on Feb 20, 1952.

It has many names, initials, and nicknames carved into it along with C15 which in my search led me here. If you happen to have any stories/pictures/etc related to this company from approximately July 5th 1951 to an undetermined date in 1952 I would be very interested in hearing from you. I wish to preserve as much history with this item as i can for future generations.
Here are the names as best as I can transcribe:

Comments: I am researching my great uncle, John Macray Baker. He survived the USS Arizona attack and served in the Pacific. He left WWII with a Bronze Star and three purple hearts. When the Korean War broke out, he petitioned the government to be allowed into a combat unit. He was wounded at Heart Break Ridge.
From family lore and from newspaper articles I have, as a 1st LT. he led the, "First," helicopter attack in military history on 10/29/1951 near Wontong-Ni. Based on the records I found here, they departed the day before with a mission of rooting-out guerillas on the ridgeline. Based on articles and family, he led the attack, and shielded fellow marines when a grenade was thrown from a bunker. He received his fifth purple heart and silver star. In all the books and articles about the use of helicopters, there is no mention of this. This would be around the time of operation hoseburner 1 and 2--but I don't know much more about this.
I am hoping to connect with people who may have had family who were in 5th Battalion/First Marines, Company B around this time. The newspaper articles label this as the first use of helicopters in an attack/military style operation (beyond troop transports).

All I know is that his buddy stepped on a land mine and my dad got a piece of it and went to Japan for recovery, and then was back at it. The only other thing he told me was that his platoon was wiped out except him and another man and the other man was killed in a car crash after they returned to the States. He was a cook. My parents married in 1954, and from what my mom told me, he suffered from PTSD. I pulled a piece of shrapnel out of his back an inch and a half long in the 80's.

Comments: I would like to tell a story about the culmination of a search that I considered a long shot, but thanks to this website, it miraculously yielded an amazing outcome.
My Father was a Marine and he fought in Korea. He was in A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines from late 1951 to late 1952. He was wounded by mortar fire and received the Purple Heart. He was extremely proud of being in The Corps and I was equally proud of him.
When he passed away in August of 2013, I posted a letter on this site, hoping to find someone who knew him, or least remembered his name. Years went by and frankly I had given up hope. Then in February of this year I received an e-mail from William Bussey. He informed me that he served with my Dad from about October 1951, to June 1952, at which time Mr. Bussey rotated home.
What was truly amazing was that not only did Bill know my Father, but they were in the same squad, the same fire team, and they shared foxholes and bunkers. Bill considered my Dad a close friend, and of the men he served with, one of the two best. I was very proud to hear this and Bill further described my Dad as a good Marine, who was cool and collected under fire. and a great shot.
My Father had a handful of pictures from the war and all these years my family has had pictures of Bill. Bill and I have exchanged e-mails almost every day since his first reply. He has been very generous with his time, answering all my questions and telling me stories. My Father was very open about his experiences in the Marines, but it was a pleasure to hear Bill's perspective.
Just last week I fulfilled another dream. My girlfriend and I traveled to Arizona to meet Bill. We had lunch with him and spent almost three hours talking. Bill is a very congenial guy and I am now proud and honored to call him my friend too.. We have plans to visit again sometime soon. Thank you Bill and thank you to the folks at the Korean War Project who helped to make this mission of mine a dream come true..

LOVE AND ONE EXTRAORDINARY HORSE, by Janet Barrett, is the full
story of the indomitable Korean pony who became the warhorse of
the 5th Regiment during the Korean War. Awarded two Purple Hearts
for wounds sustained during the Battle for Outpost Vegas, she
hauled ammo day and night, supplying both recoilless rifles and
mortar crews in that harrowing conflict. Promoted to sergeant
(and later, staff sergeant), Reckless saved lives, lifted
spirits, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. The
generous help of more than 60 Marines who served with her during
the Korea years and thereafter made this book possible. Thank you
all! 14 pages of photographs embellish her amazing story. Book is

Comments: Donald Jasper Doc Dickson, my father-in-law, was a
Navy Corpsman assigned to Charlie Company and served in
Korea from 1950 to 1951. He was awarded the Purple
Heart for shrapnel wounds received while shielding a
soldier with his own body. Don later received
the Bronze Star for valor. Don passed away peacefully
in his home in Moapa, Nevada on Friday, December 7,
2012. He loved the men of Charlie Company and was
honored to serve his country. Services for Don will be
on Saturday, December 15, 11:00 a.m. at the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Moapa, Nevada.

Keywords: I am helping a Korean veteran of Inchon, Second Seoul,
Chosin Reservoir and the breakout document some of his
experiences.
His name is John Llewellyn, he was a 30 cal gunner
throughout the war and was with the 3rd Platoon/ABLE
Company/1st Bat/5th Marines for Inchon and Second
Seoul. He remembers being in the battle for
Yeongdeungpo under Captain Bob Barrow while the 2/5
captured Kimpo airfield? Was any of the 5th fighting at
Yeongdeungpo?
Can anyone verify this or give me more information on
the movement of A/1/5 from Red Beach to crossing the Han?
Also I have contact information for John Llewellyn if
anyone remembers him and would like to contact him.
Thank You for your incredible sacrifices during the
Korean War.
Respectfully;
