NEW BOOK ABOUT RECKLESS, WARHORSE OF THE 5TH REGIMENT

City and State: CHESTER CT

Unit:

Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON

Comments: Just published, THEY CALLED HER RECKLESS -- A TRUE STORY OF WAR,
LOVE AND ONE EXTRAORDINARY HORSE, by Janet Barrett, is the full
story of the indomitable Korean pony who became the warhorse of
the 5th Regiment during the Korean War. Awarded two Purple Hearts
for wounds sustained during the Battle for Outpost Vegas, she
hauled ammo day and night, supplying both recoilless rifles and
mortar crews in that harrowing conflict. Promoted to sergeant
(and later, staff sergeant), Reckless saved lives, lifted
spirits, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. The
generous help of more than 60 Marines who served with her during
the Korea years and thereafter made this book possible. Thank you
all! 14 pages of photographs embellish her amazing story. Book is
available through various Marine Corps sites (including the
Marine Corps Association and the National Museum of the Marine
Corps) and on Amazon.com.

Comments: Does anyone remember George H. Pierce? I recently had the pleasure of meeting him
and he told me he was in the Air Force temporarily assigned to 1/5/Charlie Co. led by
Captain Jack R. Jones during the Chosin campaign. This was a surprise to me since I
had never heard of any Air Force personnel on the ground at the Chosin reservoir! He
was assigned to Captain Jones and was never far from his side, calling in airstrikes
which were vital to the defense of the Marine perimeter.

Interestingly, when he returned to his Air Force unit he was arrested for being AWOL -
they had lost track of him, but it didn't take long for the Marines to straighten that out.

In civilian life for many years he was a judge in Florida.

Comments: I just returned from a trip to Seoul, South Korea. I am even more
interested in finding anyone who remembers my father, Jack Raymond
Harralson, who enlisted in Dallas, Texas in 1949. He left San Diego on
August 18, 1950 headed to Japan then to Korea. He was aboard the
USS Henrico September 15 1950 and participated in the Inchon
landing. He was wounded September 22 1950 and was sent to Japan to
a hospital.

I would be interested in talking to anyone who knew him, had pictures
of him or participated in the Inchon landing with him. He passed away
in 1988. I am trying to get an idea of him as a young man to pass
along to my children and grandchildren.

Comments: Looking for information on the 1st battalion, 5th
Marines. My Dad Albert Dupuis served with this unit and
spent some time in Australia between 3/43 to 9/43. Would
like to know when the unit arrived in Melbourne and from
where.
