Comments: My mother, Florence Louise Bonchek-Fuss, provided her remembrance of her brother's enrollment in the service. Ted had always been a great student and had actually been offered a full scholarship to Case Western University in ohio. But when his friends and neighbors were called up by the service he went to his father and told him that he wanted to enlist to show his friends that the Jewish kid on the block would serve along with them. Apparently my mother, her mother, and her sister bagged Ted's father, Herman Bonchek, to forbid him to go to Korea but Ted was dedicated to his effort and was shipped out. His family does not have the details of where he was killed, but his memory is honored every year at Arlington. His death devastated the entire family all their lives as he was the sole son of Herman and Pauline Bonchek. The flag from his coffin is flown on the key days of remembrance but the pain in the hearts of his family members is born everyday.

Comments: Seeking information on USMC Pfc L. S. Hart from Washington state. Served with my father Pfc Robert Lehman. Hart was severely wounded after relieving my father at a forward position. A USN Corpsman reported that Hart's wound was fatal; he was included in a memorial service held in the field. But Hart is not listed as KIA in any place I have looked, and the casualty card, which I received a decade ago, indicates that Hart had been evacuated to the USN hospital ship Hope for transport to US.

Comments: Looking for information about the Fifth Recruit Battalion, Platoon 552 from January 7,
1952. I have a boot camp picture that has been in possession of my family for a very
long time. I am 66 years old now and have remembered this picture since I was a little
kid. It was in my grandmother's house then after she passed it was stored in a foot
locker. My parents didn't know any information about the picture. I would like to know
if I can find the names of the recruits. Maybe one of them is related to me. I would
definitely appreciate it if anybody could help me to research this story.

Maybe a relative of somebody reading this post was assigned to this unit and would like
to have a copy of the pic. I am more than willing to share it.
Please send me an email with the subject title Marine Corps Picture if you have any
information.

Its all very confusing. I want to know if any of you served with him, his name was Floyd Wayne South. He liked to fight, was a bad drinker. He took his own life when I was 19 and I just want to know if any of you knew him or knew of this platoon. Any information would be great.
Thank you,

Comments: My favorite Uncle, whom I held in high regard, served in Korea. He rarely spoke of the war, like most who served in combat. He died more than a decade ago. He was from the small hamlet of Concrete, WA but grew up in terrible circumstances, joining the Marines at 17 years old (when you could still successfully lie about your age). He said he was in the 5th Marine Brigade, Camp Pendleton but nothing other than he shipped out to Japan and landed at Inchon. He said they lost so many men. He needed to re-enlist after Inchon when his age was discovered. He also told me he fought at Chosin, but not much else. I have only his Platoon graduation photo of Platoon 2 5*4 USMC, San Diego, no Battalion, Regiment or anything else. Anything helps!!

Unfortunately my grandfather has been gone 16 years now and never talked about the
war. My mother found that he was in 1st Marine Division, 5th regiment, Shore Party
Battalion, C Company. If anyone has any information that would help me out it would
be greatly appreciated. My mother did state that everyone in his platoon did not
survive. At some point he was injured and sent to Japan but I am pretty certain he
was sent back in to fight. Trying to gather as much as I can but it seems very
difficult to do.

Served with several units.. Kimpo provisional regiment, 5th Marines and I believe with C & D companies but am not sure. My memory is vague, but I did spend much of my time on hill 229 as a radio operator. My unit also provided switchboard and line service.
I was on 229 when the last round fell in my area on July 27 of 1953 at 2200. We were often shelled.
Left Korea in Dec '53 arriving San Francisco on the 22 of Dec.

Comments: I am looking for someone who may have known my uncle, Gene Francis Johnson, a Marine with the 5th Marines from about May or June 1952 to May or June 1953. He is a double Purple Heart veteran and I cannot find out which part of the 5th Marines he was in or what battle. I have a copy of discharge paper made up with some information, but it does not list which Marine regiment he was in, just the dates. I know that he was in a battle or two, but from what I can find out, the Marines were re-assigned to only the Kimpo Peninsula during the time he was there. I can only determine that was the 5th Marine Infantry Regiment. Can anyone out there verify that? And can you tell me where to look for Purple Heart recipient information that might show where he earned the PHs.

Thank you. I am a retired Navy Lieutenant with two wars behind me, Vietnam and the first Persian Gulf. I am looking for this information so that I can put some finishing touches to a book that I am writing about my family's military heritage.
