Comments: My mother, Florence Louise Bonchek-Fuss, provided her remembrance of her brother's enrollment in the service. Ted had always been a great student and had actually been offered a full scholarship to Case Western University in ohio. But when his friends and neighbors were called up by the service he went to his father and told him that he wanted to enlist to show his friends that the Jewish kid on the block would serve along with them. Apparently my mother, her mother, and her sister bagged Ted's father, Herman Bonchek, to forbid him to go to Korea but Ted was dedicated to his effort and was shipped out. His family does not have the details of where he was killed, but his memory is honored every year at Arlington. His death devastated the entire family all their lives as he was the sole son of Herman and Pauline Bonchek. The flag from his coffin is flown on the key days of remembrance but the pain in the hearts of his family members is born everyday.

long time. I am 66 years old now and have remembered this picture since I was a little

locker. My parents didn't know any information about the picture. I would like to know
if I can find the names of the recruits. Maybe one of them is related to me. I would
definitely appreciate it if anybody could help me to research this story.
Maybe a relative of somebody reading this post was assigned to this unit and would like
to have a copy of the pic. I am more than willing to share it.

He was from the small hamlet of Concrete, WA but grew up in terrible circumstances, joining the Marines at 17 years old (when you could still successfully lie about your age). He said he was in the 5th Marine Brigade, Camp Pendleton but nothing other than he shipped out to Japan and landed at Inchon. He said they lost so many men. He needed to re-enlist after Inchon when his age was discovered. He also told me he fought at Chosin, but not much else. I have only his Platoon graduation photo of Platoon 2 5*4 USMC, San Diego, no Battalion, Regiment or anything else. Anything helps!!

He is a double Purple Heart veteran and I cannot find out which part of the 5th Marines he was in or what battle. I have a copy of discharge paper made up with some information, but it does not list which Marine regiment he was in, just the dates. I know that he was in a battle or two, but from what I can find out, the Marines were re-assigned to only the Kimpo Peninsula during the time he was there. I can only determine that was the 5th Marine Infantry Regiment. Can anyone out there verify that? And can you tell me where to look for Purple Heart recipient information that might show where he earned the PHs.
Thank you. I am a retired Navy Lieutenant with two wars behind me, Vietnam and the first Persian Gulf. I am looking for this information so that I can put some finishing touches to a book that I am writing about my family's military heritage.
