Recently, a state committee decided to name a veterans nursing home after 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez, who received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his heroic action during the Inchon invasion. I'm looking for survivors from his rifle platoon that landed on Red Beach. Someone alive today who witnessed his selfless act, and perhaps someone who studied under Lopez at Camp Pendleton. My understanding is that Lopez, known to friends back home as "Baldy" and "Punchy" to those who fought with him at Inchon, jumped at the chance to leave a teaching job stateside to serve in Korea. I'd like to learn more about him for a profile I'm writing. I've already talked to one of his few surviving relatives, a brother in Jacksonville, Florida. Thanks for any help you can provide. Also, there is a National Defense Services Medal, but according to him he did not receive this, and in fact, it is listed in his commendations but is written in as "unissued". When he inquired about it back in 1991, he was told he would have to provide an eyewitness account from medical personnel who treated him or an eyewitness to his wounding. When he arrived at Inje, Korea on Augsut 3, 1951 at the dispersement camp he was assigned to H&S-1-5 as a combat wireman. The next day he was detached and assigned to "B" Baker Company-1st Battalion-5th Marines. At the time of his wounding, his paperwork had been fouled up and his commander, a Capt. McDonald(?) had told him he would be getting his promotion. Hope this helps.
