Greetings,

My name is Wes Platt. I'm a reporter with the St. Petersburg Times
in Florida. Recently, a state committee decided to name a veterans
nursing home after 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez, who received a
posthumous Medal of Honor for his heroic action during the Inchon
invasion.

I'm looking for survivors from his rifle platoon that landed on Red
Beach. Someone alive today who witnessed his selfless act, and
perhaps someone who studied under Lopez at Camp Pendleton.

My understanding is that Lopez, known to friends back home as
"Baldy" and "Punchy" to those who fought with him at Inchon,
jumped at the chance to leave a teaching job stateside to serve in
Korea.

I'd like to learn more about him for a profile I'm writing. I've
already talked to one of his few surviving relatives, a brother in
Jacksonville, Florida.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I believe he was in 1st
Marines/5th/A Company.

I am putting together a "shadow box" of his military service as a gift.
I noticed that he has a Korean Service Medal with three stars, UN

Also, there is a National Defense Services Medal, but according to
him he did not receive this, and in fact, it is listed in his
commendations but is written in as "unissued".

Can this still be obtained? I want to surprise him with this gift.

So, I am looking for patches, crests, insignia, etc for the Weapons Co.

Any direction appreciated. My Uncle speaks rarely of the war.

About: Billy Bell WIA

My name is Bill Richmond jr. I am a retired Army E7. I have a friend
who lost his right arm in the Korean War. He told me he would never
speak of it over the years not even to his wife of 33 years. Recently
his son asked him about it and he asked me to possibly do some research
for him.

I told him i would try to find all the data about him and that day i can
so he can share with his son.

His name is Billy Bell he was assigned to 1st Marine Division 5th
Battalion, Company C. He was in a major conflict starting on 28 May
1951 and lost his arm on 29 May 1951 to mortar schrapnel. He was in
country for only about one month at that time. Any information or leads
would be greatly appreciated. He has no computer. I got this one in
December. I am a life member of VFW post 1677 in Casa Grande, AZ.

Been trying to locate an old 1st Div buddy from Korea. Last name
Reynolds, from Bakersfield, Cal. We were being flown to Chosen from
Pendelton went they broke out, so we were "parked" at former Japanese
Naval base in S. Japan till they made it down to Mason Korea.

While there we pulled some fun liberties, and it was there that Reynolds
was nicknamed "Lil Abner." We left Japan for Korea before New Years
1951, joined the Division, but were separated. I went to Baker,
1st Bat 5th, and Lil Abner went to a Recoiless Rifle Unit.

Saw each other a few times the year we were there. Came home just
before Christmas of 51. Last saw Lil Abner on the train from Frisco to
L.A. Don't remember his first name, as we all were called by our last
names. He went on to become a member of the Bakersfield Fire Department.
Any old Baker Bandits from '91, let me hear from you, and if anyone
knows Lil Abner would like to hear from you.

My name is Ralph "David" Fly.

This is what I remember: Between November 1952 and November 1953, 5th
Marines, 1st Marine division. I have trouble remembering what company.

I do remember I was in a company that was reinforced with an extra
platoon (How many platoons in a company? Is it four?). The extra
platoon (Which I was the corpsman) consisted of 45 mine clearing
specialists.

my platoon furnished a mine clearing marine for each patrol sent out.
I spent four months on line. Four at Battalion aid and the rest I spent
at Easy Med Hospital.

Unfortunately, my closest Marine friends who were mine clearing men were
instantly killed. Mostly when disarming a mine or when setting a new
unproved mine.

As for the names of the Marines that were killed, I remember
the last name of a "Gunny" Sergeant: the last name is Lupo ( I think he
was killed in January or February of 1953). I hope that is enough to go
on, because another name that I remember is very hard to spell. That
name is Kunswiesler--I am sure that is not the right spelling (I think
killed in February or March of 1953).

I was in the 1st Marine Div. I would be interested in knowing if
Donald Edwards was in fact KIA at Naktong River in 1950. (Possibly
July or August).

I have been unable to find out this information. We were in boot camp
together.
