At the beginning of the Korean War, the U. S. Air Force's only tactical control group was the 502nd at Pope AFB, NC. To meet the emergency in the theater, the Fifth Air Force organized the 6132nd Tactical Air Control Squadron (later, Group), which established a full-scale Tactical Air Control Center (TACC) at Taegu, South Korea, on July 23, 1950. Less than three months later, the 502nd moved to Korea and in October 1950, replaced the 6132nd in the mission of directing tactical air operations in Korea. Through its 605th Tactical Control Squadron, the group operated the TACC and worked with the U. S. Army in a Joint Operations Center (JOC). Other squadrons operated tactical air direction centers (TADC), which used stationary and mobile radar and communications equipment to guide aircraft on close air support missions. The group also deployed tactical air control parties (TACP), which accompanied ground units to communicate with USAF strike aircraft. The TACPs followed advancing UN troops into North Korea in October and November 1950, but the Chinese Communist offensive soon overran several of them. The 502nd headquarters and the TACC, which operated at Seoul in November and part of December, were forced to return to Taegu at the end of the year. During the spring and summer of 1951, the 502nd directed night bombing of enemy targets, including troop concentrations, supply dumps, and motor convoys. As UN ground forces drove the enemy back across the 38th parallel, the group, TACC, and JOC returned to Seoul in June. In October, the 502nd set up a communications station 100 miles behind enemy lines on Cho-do (Cho Island), three miles off the North Korean coast. From this location, the detachment guided UN fighters against enemy airplanes in MiG Alley, bombers against strategic targets along the Yalu River, and search and rescue aircraft toward survivors who had ditched at sea. On June 6, 1952, the 502nd was instrumental in the destruction of nine MiG-15 aircraft through highly effective control procedures to maneuver F-86 Sabres into attack positions. The following month, the 502nd guided warplanes in devastating attacks on enemy troop formations, which blunted communist offensives until the Korean truce in July 1953.

Comments: I was in Korea for about a year. Was under Maj. Venable and Col. Wentz at K-18, and under Capt. Peterson at K-3. At K-18 my primary duty was with Radar Power Units and secondary duty involved the motor pool. At K-3, we set up a school for R.O.K. units to learn Radar Maintenance.
I have photos taken during my tour- - even of honey buckets, etc., Kangnung and surrounding area.
One of my friends was at K-18 about and same time and lives near me now. I talked to son of Lt. Garfield last year.

Comments: I am trying to find any information about a plane crash in approximately 1952. The plane departed from K-18 enroute to Seoul or Japan. The passengers were going on R and R or were enroute to 502 Group at Seoul. As far as I know, there were no survivors. I need any information anyone might have about this accident. One of the passengers was either named Butts, or maybe Butts was his nickname. He came from Tallahassee FL.

Comments: The 608 Communications Group was a mobile communications unit specilizing in teletype, cripto, radio, micro wave and telephones. We sometimes supported the 3rd Marine Division in training exercises. We had abouit 900 men assigned to this group. We also trained ROK's several times. Our home base was on Kadena AFB but our actual work force was spread all over the Far Ease, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Clark PI, and for short periods of time in Tailand and Viet Nam. I was in this unit from August 57 to February 59.
Keywords: 608 Communications Group was a mobile unit dispatched all over the Far East from its home base in Okinawa.
This unit was formed in Korea and could have been the 502 tactical Control Group, however I am not sure?

Col. Magnun. Lt. Col. Kirpatrick and Major Sheppard who was the adjutant
for the HQ Sq, Sec. There were other officers in other sections of the
Group Maj. Glosecrose, 1st Sgt. Altwain. In the barracks there was an a/
2c named Cooper, A/2c Dodson these two bunked across from me.
There was A/2C Minor, and about 9 or 10 others. There also was an A/1c
Salinas who was the training sgt. for our AP's that were scattered through
So. Korea, the 506, 507, 508 who operated the Radar Sites. It will great
pleasure to receive a msg. from any one that was there from Feb. 56 to
Feb. 57 when I rotated to Base HQ. 824th ABG at Carswell AFB, Ft. Worth,

Comments: I was a flight engineer on C-119s, and involved in several air drops to the 502nd on top of this 5000 foot mountain. Code name for the drops was "Aching Back", because of the difficulty in hitting the drop zone due to downdrafts, turbulence and slow required air speeds. If anyone has a picture of these drops from the ground up, I would appreciate a copy.

My father died when I was three (lymphosarcoma at age 27, possibly from atomic fallout) . I
am going through some of his records and I see that from April 1, 1952 until February 18,
1953 he was with Headquarters 502nd Tactical Control Group APO97 and 607th Aircraft
Control and Warning Squad.
His name was Frank (Francis) Devine from New Jersey.
I only have two photos of him and know practically nothing about him.
My mom cut off all ties to his family and she has since passed away.
Anyone out there know him or have photos??

HEFFERNAN distinguished himself by meritorious service in connection with military operations against an enemy, as Communications Officer of the 502nd Tactical Control Group, during the period 28 December 1952 to 27 July 1953. Captain HEFFERNAN was instrumental in coordinating the activity, thus eliminating the interference. To provide immediate support in detecting and destroying low, slow flying enemy aircraft, Captain HEFFERNAN, on 28 April 1953, established communications for a light weight radar station in the Inchon area. This site was installed and operated by Group headquarters personnel during the first 24 hour period, before being assigned to a subordinate command. Due to the expeditious installation, this station aided in the destruction of three (3) PO2 enemy aircraft. During the month, prior to the cessation of hostilities, United Nations aircraft were required to provide closer ground support than had previously been attempted. Under the directions of Captain HEFFERNAN, the communications system operated at peak efficency, insuring the success of the tactical operations against the enemy. He initiated and wrote greatly improved regulations and standing operating procedures, dealing with very-high-frequency modulation radio equipment. Through his initiative and devotion to duty, Captain HEFFERNAN has brought great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

If you met him, you would remember him. He was an Army Sargent during World War II with Ten (10) Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons, Silver Star, 3 Purple Hearts, CIB, and previous to that a Ranger in the Pacific. Only one of three brothers to come out of the Pacific Alive.

Comments: I arrived in Korea in 1954 assigned to K-47 air base in Chunchon. Spent a year there with MSQ 1 close support radar. We closed the base in Sept 1955 taking everything to our HQ at Kangnung. We had 2 guard dogs with handlers that patrolled the perimeter each night but this did not stop the locals from getting on base often. I still have a list of all the men in the unit when it was disbanded and will post that when I retreive it at home.

Comments: I was a radar technician servicing an MSQ-1 Close Support Bombing installation at an all-but-abandoned Air Base in Chunchon, 1954-1955. The only name I can remember is Orville Pitsinger, also a radar technician. Am looking to make contact with comrades-in-arms. I'm not sure of the outfit (608th) but I hope to confirm it and update this info.
