Comments: My dad, Herbert T Hughes, served in the USF in Korea 1950-1954. I have only a few photos - nothing with any detail to tell me his story of service.

He never talked about his service other than to tell my mom “I talked the planes down” and to tell me once “I was an air traffic controller.”

Other than that I know nothing. In addition, all of his records were burned in the St Louis archives fire.

Looking for anyone who may help me shed light on him and his military service.

Please help.

Thank you!
Mike

Comments: I was stationed on the radar mountain near K18 and Kangnung from August 1952 to August 1953. A cold winter with lots of snow that still makes me shiver. To say nothing of the hours spent in a slit trench waiting for an alert to end. Lousy food and cold quonset huts for us but still much better off than the Army guys at the DMZ. They were sleeping in the mud and snow AND getting shot at to boot.

His duties included driving mail and troops to and from the front line. Curious if any fellow Veterans may remember him? Comments: Me and many other regular Air Force persons were
blended into the just activated 606 AC and W Reserve Unit
at Shaw AFB, SC directly upon our return from a
year's
tour in Alaska on June 25, 1950. The war started that
day while we were still aboard ship. Our new Unit,
the
606th, docked at Pusan, Korea in late September,
1950.
We were mobile and basically followed the front
lines.
We were settled in on a hill near Anju in N. Korea 65
miles from the Yalu River in late November, 1950. The
Peoples Chinese invaders drove us all back south
right
after Thanksgiving, our Unit winding up at Pusan
again. In 1951 our RADARs were set up on a hill
looking down on Kimpo Air Base near Seoul. When the
peace talks started in 1951, the 606th let we Alaska
regulars return home to Sewart AFB near Smyrna TN.
That AC and W Unit went to Algiers; I didn't reinlist so
was discharged. I joined the AF Reserves and became a
Loadmaster on C-119's--my best days as an Airman.

Comments: My name is Themis Vranas and I am a teacher in the Hellenic Elementary School.

I research the accident of C-47 s/n 49-2622 of 13th RHAF (Greek Air Force ) that occured on Sept. 17, 1951, at Paengyong-do island (K-53).
During take-off, the right main wheel found soft ground and the plane went straight to the sea, with almost take-off speed.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries, but the C-47 seemed doomed as it was floating into the sea with its cargo doors open.

Two brave men of 606 AC and W Sqn, Det. 2,
Cpl Walter W. Henricks , AF 16310913 and
Pfc James J. Clark, AF 11192126
were at the beach, preparing to leave the island with an LST.
They aided the crew come ashore and then volunteered to save the C-47 by fixing chains and cables at its tailwheel, a very risky job to sat the least.
They were fighting for almost an hour in the cold waters and tide.
Finally they made it, but Henricks was hurt by the tailwheel and rescued by Clark.
No citation was ever given to these two heros by the USAF or HAF for that action.

Thanks to Sgt (USAF) James Lorenz of 608 AC and W Sqn
I contacted mr Henricks.

Can anybody give me any info about James J. Clark
then and/or now ?
Is there any eyewitness of the above mentioned accident?
Does anybody have any recollections of the Greek Flight in general or any photos of the Greek planes ?

Just for the history, s/n 49-2622 is still proudly flying operationally with the Hellenic Air Force.
It is one of only three operational military C-47 in Europe, not one military in USA !

Additionally, s/n 49-2622 is the sole military operational aircraft of any type in the whole world that fought in the Korean War and still serves the same Air Arm just like 55 years ago !

Thank you for your time reading all the aboove,

you all have my respect,
