overturned. One Whiting sailor killed. The driver was eventually
taken off the ship. No idea what happened to him. A short Tennessee

Was Senior Petty Officer of O-E Division for about
five or six months until May 1955. The Navy apparently
couldn't decide whether we belonged in the Engineering
Department as the E-R Division or whether we belonged
in the Operations Department as the O-E Division. :-)

The little man, ordered the littler Japanese kids, to go get it... and, he ate it. I was within ten feet of him and would like to see more pictures, taken, that day... For something like 17 years, no American had set foot on that island, until we got there. The little kids rescued one or two guys, caught, in a current, too far out...

I note that Alden Schwartz sent us a very kind message when he relinquished his command of FAW6 and USS Kenneth Whiting figures among the seaplane tenders with which we operated.

Comments: Comments: Albert Silveira, my father in law, passed away on January 27,
2007. My wife and I would like to hear from anyone who served with him.
He served on the seaplane tender USS Kennith Whiting and the destroyer
USS Thompson during the Korean war. He also did underwater demolition.
He was injured in 1951 or 1952 when the Thompson was hit by fire from
shore. He will be interred at the National Cemetery at Santa Nella, CA.

Comments: Served onboard the KW 53-55.Reported to the ship after completion of airman 'P' school in Norman, OK and AB 'A' school in Philly. Operated the Seaplane Crane on the 54 deployment and ran the Inert Gas producer on the 55 cruise. Assigned to NAAS CABINESS FIELD, CORPUS CHRISTI, TX IN 56 and then returned to civilian life. Worked as a Field Engineer on various Missle, Aircraft and Space programs. Retired from Grumman Aerospace in 1994 after working on the F14 TOMCAT at OCEANA, NAS, in VA BCH.for 20yrs.Married for 49yrs,4 daughters, 5 grandkids. Highly recommend the KW REUNIONS! We have one every year in May. This years is in Portland, OR on May5-9.Hope to see you there!!

Comments: My father served on the Kenneth Whiting as a machinist from '52 to '56. His name was Joe Tenison. His final rating when he was discharged was Petty First. Did you know him? He told me stories of Japan, (Iwakuni-by-the-Sea?), Austrailian pilots, drinking with Ernie Fry?, typhoons, accidentally hosing the Captain's wife off of the deck. He died two weeks ago after a 5 yr. battle with lung cancer, but I would love to find anyone who might have known him back then.
