who died last year. He served on the USS Gardiners Bay from 1945-1947.
He told me many stories of that ship and their crew, especially the
Gardiners Bays stop at Hong Kong. I was wondering if their was anyone
left from his old crew that remembered Don. If so please reply to this
post.

Comments: I am trying to find veterans that might remember my father, Richard "Dick" Haney from his time on the Garndiner's Bay. Originally from Long Island New York, he had fought WWII and returned to active duty in 1950. From the many photos and text, I can see he was sent to Iwakuni and he says that he both flew and fixed the planes. He wrote that the crews lived in old Japanese barracks and got supplies from the seaplane, which was anchored in the bay. Before his discharge in 1953, he was then sent to Hokkaido, a small island in northern Japan. He says it was the dead of winter and very cold.

Anyone that might know of my father or a similar situation? I would love to learn about my Dad's experiences; all I have a the pictures and bit of text.

Thank you for any help!

My Dad is 81 and still talks about those times... they anchored off 25 miles from shore for the a- bomb tests... when they were over, the would ferry some of the crew to shore for a " leave "... beer in hand, etc... they walked the beach, swam the waters, and so on and so on..... my father regrets no moment of his service... nor do I.... I am proud to say that I have a father who served and a son who has served in the marines... while he did not see battle, nor go over seas, he made his choice and was ready... Comments: Fellow Veterans,

I want to personally thank each one of you for your service to our great nation of the United States of America. I was just on the phone speaking with my father, Richard C. Coleman (Dick). I was asking about the ship he served on with the USN, which was the USS Gardiners Bay (AVP-39). My father was a Gunners Mate. I have viewed a few of the comments and saw many of you that served in the same areas overseas that my father did. I'll let my father know of this website. Please feel free to contact me so I can give my father additional information about his former shipmates. I know he would be thrilled to contact former friends and associates. Any information I can provide you would be my honor.

Thank you again for your service to various parts of the world, and for the freedoms we enjoy today! Thank you for your sacrifice. I honor each of you.

Sincerely,

ALTHOUGH I HAD BEEN TRAINED AS A RADAR-RADIO GUNNER, I WAS STILL A SEAMAN FIRST CLASS AT THE TIME, SO WHEN WE LEFT HAWAII I WAS GIVEN THE MOST IMPORTANT TASK ON THE SHIP. I WAS ASSIGNED TO RUN THE LAUNDRY.
ACTUALLY THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST JOBS AS I GOT TO WORK ON THE OUTER DECK AREA INSTEAD OF INSIDE THE SHIP.AND WHEN WE GOT TO COOLER AREAS IT WAS PROBABLY THE MOST COMFORTABLE AREA AS IT WAS WARM. DON PAULSEN

Comments: I was the disbursing Officer on the Gardiner's Bay from 1954 to 1956. It seemed our primary mission was monitoring aircraft traffic all over the far east. Our cripto shack was manned 24 hours a day, and all officers stood regular duty in the shack. We made one trip into Keelung, Formosa, a trip into the Pescadores where we say the gunboats of the Nationalist Navy (frequently sitting high and dry), and on two extended occasions we worked as the Station Ship in Hong Kong, providing boarding parties for the visiting sailors on R and R to the area. In a year and a half we 'tended' a seaplane on one occasion. It developed trouble and had landed in the harbor in Nha Trang, Indochina (Viet Nam). We were dispatched by COMAIRPAC to leave Hong Kong immediately, and render assistance as needed to the PBM and its crew. About all we were capable of doing was to hold their hands until real assistance arrived. That's what we did. We actually refueled a PBM in the Pescadores on one occasion, but it may have been a training exercise??
