Comments: I can't believe that there is a web site for this
kind of information sharing and the input that I've read so far. I was an O.R. Technician stationed at the 43rd from June 1973 till June 1974. I worked with such great people as Dr.Service, Dr.Pfeiffer, Maj.Pugh, Cpt.Utz, Lt.Margeret Plummer, Sgt.Tillman, Sgt.Toliver, Spc.James Rudolf(sp), and many others during my tour there. I have many fond memories of the comarderie we had, even with the conditions we were forced to live in. If you were there during this time frame, then you must remeber the two dogs that had the run of the Camp, Shit and Bandit. I look forward to reading the comments from those I've known and those I didn't in the future. God Bless You All.

He spoke of great memories of the people he met well in Korea will stationed at the 8055th mash unit in Uijongbu and the 38th parallel. Richard stated he worked in central supply and served during Nov 28 1950 to March of 1952. Richard would love to hear from anyone who remembers him. I know she was a surgical nurse, flew in helicopters to the front lines to pick up wounded. She never talked much about that time, but she did leave me some nice photos.

Comments: Need info by March 1st, my mother's 83rd birthday!!!Please help me make my present.
My mother, Capt Mary-Frances I. Haley was a Regular Army nurse anesthetist, from Philadelphia in the 8033 from 1950-51. I believe she transferred to Toyko General in 52. She was quite beautiful (curly black haired, green eyed) and vivacious. She married on R and R at the chapel at Tokyo General Hospital to Major John W. Riley, an Administrative Officer from the Med. Company 7th Calvary.FECOM, formerly with 118th Surgical Hospital FECOM.
There are only only medical personnel names that I recall from childhood listening to the few stories my mother ever told (and can fit to a photo). A nurse, Fran Reynolds. Doctor/Lieutentant Cooley, who I believe may have been a dental surgeon, but that is not positive information, though he certainly was a physican.Another physican, who may have been a Light Col was named Easterday. Two commanders were a Col Gould, whose first name may be "purdue" (or that may be a nickname) and Hollerman, whose first name may be Jermiah. I also can identify a pilot, named Harvey Fulleflove (spelling uncertain), who used the name Harvey Fuller, was nicknamed "Speed" and was from Texas: I believe he ran medevac and supplies. I know he was Airforce; I am not sure if he was a helicopter pilot. I would very much like to find any of them and any others.
I have quite a few photos of MASH, not just of the surgery, but of quirky and daily life which she took. She was a fatastic photographer. These pictures certainly put one clearly into a time, place, and experience.
I would like to connect and gather more info as a present for her 83rd birthday, March 1st. I would appreciate memories about her from anyone who knew her, as well as information about her co-workers and friends, living or dead.
Thanks for any help you can offer. I love my mother very much, and have always been very proud of her.
Because of her example, I became an M.D. PhD, at a time when women in my field were still rather rare. Because of her example and yours, I have always endeavored to persist, regarless of obstacles.
Wishing you well. Thanks.

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I'm trying to track something down. I'm trying to find out what the symbol is called that was on the door to the "swamp" tent from the M*A*S*H TV show and movie, which also shows up in a photo of Dr. Hornberger that was supposedly taken in front of a tent during the Korean conflict. To jog your collective memories, it is roughly a bow shaped image in red with the "arrow" pointed straight up. I'm curious to find out the origin of this symbol and its significance to the MASH units.

At that time we had 2 general surgeons, an internist, 2 general medical officers and an on the job trained radiologist. The CO was Lt. Col. Comments: I was evacuated through 8055 M*AS*H with Hemmorhagoc fever.
I joined the Eighth Engineer Battalion of the First Cav in July 1951. I
passed your hospital many times. I even dropped in when I was paying
soldiers. But I found out you did not keep patients very long, and the
people I was looking for were already gone.
Then, on 11 Nov 1951, I felt bad and went into our medical detachment,
with whom I was friends, and told Dr Pete Sackett "Hey Pete, would you
look me over? I feel like hell". He checked me, then looked at his
medics, and asked "Who wants to drive him over?".
I asked what he was doing, and he said I was being evacuated. I went
for my tooth brush and a change of underwear and entered the system.
You have probably already guessed I had hemmorhagic fever. I spent two
nights at 8055, then put on a train to 121st Evac. Then I was sent to
Osaka Army Hospital and joined several others with the disease. I got
the feeling they were using us as research subjects, because at the end
of Jan 1952, they discharged all of us at the same time.
While hospitalized, the Cav moved to Hokkaido and the 45th came to
Korea. I am from Oklahoma, so I knew the unit. I rejoined the Cav in
Hokkaido, stayed six more months, and was sent home for separation
because my two years was up.
I asked the army for an exam before I separated, and they said I was
OK. I also filed with VA, they also said I was OK I felt weak for
about three years. I have wondered through the years if there was any
residual. I met an MD from Korea and asked him. He said if I was
well this far out, I"m OK.
Then Hantavirus broke out in Arizona and New Mexico. I finally found
out it was very similar. In fact, the Hanta part was named for the
Hantan River, which was in our sector. I went "swimming" in that river
while building a bridge.
When I read the book, I noticed it started on 11 Nov 1951, the same day
I was evacuated.
Another interesting date I share is 4 Sep 1950. That is the date I
entered active duty. I just found out that was Beetle Bailey's first
day.
When I saw the movie, it took me about 30 seconds to determine "That is
the 8055!".
I even shared an experience with Rader. I went to Kimpo air base to
see a friend, and spent the night. They invited me on a night recon
mission, and I got my ignorance and my curiosity all mixed up and
went. I asked, what about my jeep driver? He was a corporal. They
said don't worry, we will take care of him.
Next morning as we left, I asked the driver what happened. He said
they put a leather flight jacket on him and took him to the officer's
club.
I"m sure you saw the episode where Radar drove LTC Blake to Kimpo to
rotate home. It was the same story. I never did understand why they
killed LTC Blake in the story. They did not have the rotation system
written into the story.
Saw several characters I had known my name, such as I Corps commander,
the tank colonel from the Cav, etc.
I have just sort of rambled on, but it is good to go over these things
occasionally.
I remained in the reserve, and retired from the army. In 1991, I went
to visit a friend who worked in Seoul. Went up the MSR to our old
area. The road is now an eight lane highway and it took two hours on a
bus. Traffic is choking. It is built up almost solid from Seoul to
way past Uijongbu. The 121st Evac is still there in Seoul. Talk
about deja vu!.
I want to thank all the medics for the care I received.
It was outstanding.

It was only a few days ago that I learned that the 43rd and the 8055th were one and the same unit, and was quite thrilled to learn of its connection to the famous media-version "MASH". Comments: My father was a medic with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was assigned to the 8055 MASH between 1950-51. He probably had a thick French-Canadian accent back then. I'd be interested in hearing of anyone who may remember him from the war. I'd also like to know of any 8055 MASH reunions as my father visits us often (I am a Canadian assigned to NORAD in Colorado-Springs CO). Thanks Eh!

Comments: My father, Tom Laing was with the 8055 MASH from late '51 to late '52. He was trained as a medic and an O.R. Tech.
He worked in both surgery and central supply. Does anyone remember him? I'm interested in any information that you could share about the 8055. Pictures, remembrances or unit history.
Also any information about upcoming reunions would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom Laing
