I am in need of information about a KIA from the Korean War.I will identify the person as best as I can. If I may individually search a list/database, please inform me with the www address or the ftp address. Person: Robert Smith : USMC 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Located on the western front of the Korean battleground. He was killed somtime in the fall of 1952 (but I don't think so) more likely it occurred in the spring of 1953. I need to find his Marine Corps Serial Number and or Social Security Number. I know that he was from Billings Montana and was stationed at the M.C.R.D. in San Diego, California prior to being assigned to Korea. Please send me email. ----more from KWP---- I am forwarding the information on one of many Robert Smith's. Most are USA. There are 3 USMC KIA 1.Robert Eugene 2. Robert L *, 3. Robert William. Robert L is from Billings. Smith, Robert L. USMC Svc# 1126122 CasDt 03/20/53 Cas KIA Hostile Birth 12/01/32 Home Billings Montana Rank Sgt/E5 (more) Ted, I have another set of lookups that I hope are easier than Robert Smith. These additional names are other Marines that I have beed able to jolt out of my rustic memory. Any information will help. 1. Gordon Bess, I only remember that he is the author of the comic strip titled "Redeye". 2. Stanley Hunsaker, from somewhere in South Dakota 3. Lenneth Bland, from Yoakum, Texas 4. Ishmail Garcia , no information that I can remember and I am not sure of the first name spelling. We were all together at San Diego as late as spring 1952. Again, thank you! Mr. Barker, my Dad, Jack Dedrick, is a Korean War Vet from the HOW Company 3rd Battalion 1st Marine Division. He has been searching for some time now for a comprehensive list of casualities from the above HOW Company. He has been to the Memorial and the Marine Corp Museum in an attempt to piece together this list. To date, he has accumulated a list of over 90 men. Some are verified, some not. Each time he has hit dead-ends, looking at microfilm lists that are in very bad shape. He wants to know if you can help direct him on how he can access all of HOW Company casualities for the war. He is forwarding a hardcopy list of the 90 men to me, which I would be happy to send you along to you as a file if that would be useful. I look forward to your reply, Respectfully, Bill Dedrick BDedrick@SQA.com

My father was killed 4/24/51 at Hill 902 near Chunchon. I was only 4 months old when he was killed, so I never had a chance to know him. By a stroke of luck, one of his buddies from his unit, James E. Jarrett of St Joe, Mo. got up the courage to try to locate my family. I have now gotten to meet several men who served under and with my dad and have had a chance to finally get to know him. Note: 4/25/2000 Milt Keiser mlkeizer@juno.com sends this for Harry: Mr. Jacobsen, Saw your inquiry on the Korean War Project WEB page. I did not know your father, but I shared his night of battle, was wounded and carried off 902 on a stretcher the next morning.. I climbed from noon to 8 pm, as a member of (George) G/3/1, to get up to the peak of Hill 902 the night of April 23-24, 1951. Your father's unit, (How) H/3/1, was on the ridgeline to our left, and they were very instrumental in passing ammunition and grenades to us as we ran short and the fighting grew steadily heavier. (Item) I-3-1 was on our right. Except for the 3rd Platoon of G/3/1, with its two attached light .30 cal. machine guns, orders that night were to avoid firing if possible, so as not to give away the flanking and ridgeline crest positions. Marines in the middle poured heavy fire on the Chinese troops who had to use a "saddle" of land no wider than 15 yards or so to approach our position. From 8:30 pm until about 9 am the next morning, the Chinese troops hammered at us but took no more ground than they had gained in the first 15 minutes. They were very close, however...we traded grenades with them almost hand-to-hand. Some of the enemy attempted leaping to grab at our mens' rifle, and the MG, barrels close to the brink of a ledge, a sharp drop-off more than a tall man's height. Keys to our resistance were that ledge, just a short distance over the crest of Hill 902, and the fact that we got to the top of the mountain first, by about 20 minutes, to claim the ledge. It was slightly cupped, and protected those who kept their heads down from all except mortar fire, grenades and rockets, and had only one low spot allowing easy passage to the front of Hill 902. The rest of the mountain's north sides weres extremely steep. On the left and right flanks, the slopes were about 80 degrees and progressively deep, so with enough firepower they were defended comparatively easily. It was the middle strip, the "throat" of the hill that bore the brunt of the battle. Seeming to be everywhere and doing everything, the driving spirit of our defense came from TSgt Harold "Speedy" Wilson, who was awarded the MOH for his valor and courageous actions that night. Look him up! A rough diagram of the mountaintop, and a short resume of the fire-fight, can be found in "U.S. MARINE OPERATIONS IN KOREA, 1950--1953 Volume IV. The East-Central Front." This was produced by: Historical Branch, G-3, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. (1962). It's purchased from the Marine Corps Association, or from R. J. Speights, P.O. Box 140733, Austin, TX 78714-0733, phone 512/836-0458. Cost when I got mine was $25, plus $2.50 for shipping and handling. The whole April 23-24, 1951 scenario starts on Page 104. The Hill 902 information is on pages 111-116. Semper fidelis, Milt Keizer

HM3 Joseph Bennie Binic, SN: 5713281, USN. Assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion attached to 3rd Platoon, G Company. Was missing near Observation Post berlin Gate coordinates CT085075 during the night of 24-25 July '53. The above information was in an Investigation Report dated 2 August 1953 conducted by a CPT Donald H. Smith. The Memorandum of Report was one of the many letters in my Uncle Paul's 201 File (Personnel File). According to the memorandum there were 15 Marines and the Navy Corpsman lost at OP Berlin Gate that night. I believe I forwarded to you an e-mail from Ann which indicated that of the 15 Marines, 2 were POWs, 6 KIA and the remaining 7 MIAs. I have asked Ann to check with the Navy Casualty Office to determine the status of HM3 Binic. He could have been a POW - when I find out from Ann, I will let you know.

Always 22
Walk softly; Mother's dreaming
Of her boy who marched away----
Went to fight for me and you,
And he was only "22."
He looked so strong that day,
As he went marching far away,
He loved the red, white, and blue,
But, he was only "22."
Yes, walk softly and let her dream;
The years will quickly pass,
I'll grow older, and so will you ---
But her boy will always be "just 22."
