Comments: My uncle Capt. Lee G. SCHLEGEL was shot down and killed while on USAF Mission #5108 on 23 April 1951. He flew that day with Adrian (Spud) CHRISTENSON, Cecil WRIGHT, and an unknown 4th pilot. They were shooting up rail yards in Yonchon, 8 miles SW of Chorwon, Korea. On this same date, Cornelius SCOTT was shot down 8 miles SW of Kumhwa doing much the same thing. If anyone recognizes the names of these fliers, please contact me so we can exchange notes.

Comments: I am looking for any information or photo's of the 16th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.
My great uncle Emmett N. Long was a Capt.and pilot some where around North Korea around the town of Chinnampo is where it is told that his plane was shot down. I know from family information and information on this site that his Aircraft type was F-80C, and Aircraft number was 49-653. I'm not sure if it was named in any type of personal way. Even the smallest of information would be greatful!!

Was there when the Air Force went from squadron maintenance to Field Maintenance. I was in the Air Force until 1964 and served at different bases and on different types of aircraft but I always remember the 51st the best and the checker tails are my favorites.

According to Soviet records a MiG was in fact hit in a combat at the same time, though was able to return to base with engine damage. Does anyone know the full name and rank (at the time) of this pilot?, or anything else about this encounter. The other pilots in the flight, Topcoat How, were named Curran and Hall. Thanks.

I knew a Ronald Anthony Smith I think we called him Smitty, he's was an irrespressable extremely high energy spirit African American Soldier in The U.S. Army, and I believe it's his dad featured as the black hero and friend of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who has a new book out called "Brothers In Arms" about a black tank command during WW2 and I believe the Smitty featured in this book is either the dad or granddad of Ronald Anthony Smith "Smitty" of who I was in basic training with at Fort Sill, OK in late 1978.

I saw Kareem on TV yesterday promoting his book and they showed a photo of WW2 Soldier "Smitty" and he looks exactly like the smitty I was in the Army with.

Is this you? If not what advice can you give me to help me contact some of the above mentioned people.

I am looking for information, first hand and otherwise on F-80 units’ air combat with MiG’s, especially in the period November 1950 thru mid 1951. A few of these encounters are well known and written about in published US works but most are not, sometimes they are only barely mentioned at all in available US records. But some had surprising results from the Soviet perspective that I believe would make them very interesting if described in detail from both sides, so this is what I am trying to do.
