Comments: Son of Lt Cmdr Ernie Maguire. Today is the 50th
anniversary of my dad’s death (4/27/70). After flying TBM’s in WWII and Skyraiders in Korea, dad lost his life in a crane accident just 4 miles from our home.
I was only 13 at the time, but his influence and flying legacy is always with me.
I doubt there are many squadron mates left out there (dad would have been 100 this summer), but would love to hear from anyone that might have known my dad...

Comments: Hi I'm Bob Rockford. I was a Navy Reserve Photographer at the base in ST. Louis and was called up when VA923 was called up. I went to San Diego with the squadron and was assigned to the base Photo Lab. I kept active as the squadron photographer and have a lot of pictures. Just before the carrier shipped out I was sent to Pensacola Florida For an advanced training school and never got back to the squadron. I was also a Navy Bombardier during WW2. I lived in St. Louis until 2013. At that time my wife of 69 years was quite ill and I had no living relatives left in St. Louis so I moved to Greenwood AR. to be closer to my son and his family. My wife passed away at 89 years old four months after we moved to Arkansas. I'll spend the rest of my life here. My work life was always in manufacturing management with different companies. Wish I could find some odd jobs down here but when employers see that I'm going to be 90 this year that's the end of the interview. I'm lucky because I'm in good health and can do about anything.
Good talking to everyone.

Comments: I have posted two videos on YouTube of VA-923 which were filmed during their 1951 deployment aboard CV-31 to the Korean theater of war.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHgxF0Us_po
The first video depicts carrier operations aboard CV-31.
Included on the film are a flight of F4Us in formation, several landings, and pilots conducting their pre-flight inspections.
I would like help in identifying the 3 pilots shown in the film.
If you have any information on them please contact me.

The second video is gun camera film from my grandfather's plane.
My grandfather, Edward Woelm, was a Skyraider pilot in VA-923.

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VA-923 I am especially interested in any information about the MiG encounter of 27 November 1951, in which an AD-3 flown by a Lt/ McMasters was hit and damaged, although not downed, by a MiG-15. If someone even knows this pilot’s full name that would help. Any further info on this encounter, or that of CVG-102 F9F’s 18 November 1952 as well or any other, first hand or not, it would also be helpful.
